the SCOOP May/June 2014 Lakewood Early Childhood PTA Newsletter From the President… It is hard for me to believe, but this is my last Scoop article as the President of LECPTA. Whew--those two years flew by! Being part of LECPTA has been immensely fulfilling and exciting for me and my family. We have met so many people who have given us great joy and friendship. It is hard to go anywhere in Lakewood or nearby communities without running into a fellow LECPTA member. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank LECPTA for the bounty of goodness it has bestowed on me and my family. To my predecessor and dear friend, Julie Derrick. You are such a remarkable person—genuine with no frills about you! Your guidance was so helpful to me in my early months. And your easy-going manner and superb insight were tremendously helpful to me. Thank you! Thank you to Kim Pustulka, current Treasurer and incoming President. Your savvy financial skills kept LECPTA in the black and you taught me how to spend smarter. Your keen communication skills and sense of humor kept me smiling. I know LECPTA will continue to thrive in your exceptionally capable hands. To my fellow Board members: thank you for the countless hours you give to LECPTA day after day. Some say an organization is only as strong as its weakest link. We are clearly a “beast” (as the young ones say today), as there is not a weak one among us. I could not have asked for a better team of women and men to work alongside. Thank you for your creativity and commitment! Sometimes people ask me how much of my time LECPTA takes. Honestly, I cannot say for sure. I do find myself driving around Lakewood a lot dropping items off at houses and picking things up. I know virtually every street in Lakewood--even the obscure ones. No Google mapping necessary for me! Whether it’s planning tours, responding to emails, fielding interesting phone calls, or ordering tickets, LECPTA kept me enjoyably engaged these past four years I was on the Board. And it was not just me. I had my husINSIDE THIS ISSUE: band picking up tickets at Severance Hall for Musical Membership 2 Rainbows performances and my Dad driving around Member-o-bilia 3 with me dropping off Brake 4 Kids sign materials to Membership Form 4—5 members‘ homes for assembly. LECPTA is quite the family affair and it should be! Member Discount 6 News From the PTA 7 –8 No matter how much time LECPTA has taken, it has 9 given back to me a thousand times over. It may sound Fundraiser sappy, but I cannot imagine having not been part of Volunteers 10 such a great group of families. We are such a great Fourth of July 11 bunch! I’ll be seeing you around this summer and look Baby & Toddler 12 forward to watching your families grow. Kid’s Activities 13-19 Wishing you a wonderful start to the summer! Cheers! Who’s Who 20 Best regards, Colleen de Boer, President 226-2602, [email protected] Calendar of Events Hello Members! It truly takes a village to make our organization successful so I’d like to offer up a great big THANK YOU to those folks who have given time and effort to help all of our events, meetings and programs. YOU ALL ROCK! I would also like to thank everyone who helped me with programs and meetings this year, especially Patty McLaughlin, Monica Kopecky, Deb Cox, Colleen de Boer and Erin Senney. I’ve enjoyed getting to know everyone and contributing to this great group of people! Next year, I am passing the reins to Deb Cox who I know will do a fantastic job. I’m off to the Green Committee and Community Service positions, and I’m super excited about it! Now it’s time for my final event—LECPTA Annual Installation Dinner! Join us for a celebration of all that has been accomplished in LECPTA this year. There will be a delicious catered meal along with door prizes and plenty of conversation. This is a great chance to thank our officers and committee chairs for all of their efforts over the past year and congratulate those taking on leadership roles next year. Read more about the dinner on the next page. Installation will be held in the Ranger Cafe at Lakewood High School (at the corner of Franklin and Bunts), on Wednesday, May 14, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. If you have not received your evite to this event, please contact me. It’s a year-end celebration of all that has been accomplished in LECPTA in the past membership year, a chance to meet new friends and connect with old. It’s a time we honor former leaders and formally install our new leaders. It’s a chance to have a delicious, catered meal with a great group of people! Who should attend Installation Dinner? Everyone! Contrary to some misconceptions, Installation Dinner is not for officers only. It is for all LECPTA members—new and old. If this is the first chance you will have to attend an LECPTA function, we would be thrilled to have you come. And, if you are an LECPTA regular, we are expecting you! Come and show your support for our new leaders as they are installed into their new positions. What happens at Installation Dinner? Besides eating, drinking, door prizes, and other merriment, we install our new leaders and recognize individuals nominated by their peers whose service to the LECPTA has been exemplary in the past year. We will also present a life-time achievement award to a deserving member who is aging out or ―sunsetting—in her involvement and has made a significant contribution in service and leadership over a sustained period of time. What should I do if I want to attend? Please RSVP to the evite you received. if you did not receive it, we may not have your correct email on file so please contact me so I can update our database and get one to you asap. 8 We’re hosting a Thirty-One fundraiser with 20% of the sales donated to LECPTA!
