Aims of the PE Department
Enjoy
We aim to ensure students enjoy their physical education lessons by providing
exciting and challenging lessons that enable them to progress as performers and
learners
Achieve
We teach to enable students to achieve to the best of their sporting potential and
always try to inspire students to try a variety of different sporting activities
Aspire
We promote student aspirations through PE and Sport to ensure students have a
vision and a pathway through our subject. We aim to provide our students with as
many opportunities as possible. To this end, links have been established with local
outside agencies who support the work we do within the curriculum. We aim to
develop our club links in the future to allow more students access to sport outside
of school. Established links include; clubs, schools, development officers and
coaches including our own SSCO.
We are committed to providing high quality PE within curriculum time and currently
offer all students at Key Stage 3 the Government target of 2 hours high quality PE
every week. At Key Stage 4 students enjoy 1 hour high quality PE per week.GCSE
and BTEC students have 5 hours study over two weeks. In addition to this our
extra curricular program is offered to encourage students’ to participate in a
range of challenging activities in a safe and controlled environment through our
PESSCL programme.
We firmly believe in promoting healthy lifestyles through PE lessons and clubs. We
feel it is important that our students understand the benefits of exercise and
physical activity in their lives, leading to a lifelong interest in sport.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum
The national curriculum requirements at KS3 state that all schools should cover
games, gym and/or dance, athletics and outdoor and adventurous activities.

Key Stage Four Curriculum PE
The national requirements at KS4 are that students should take part in two of the
following six areas; games, gymnastics, dance, OAA, athletics, and swimming. At
Sacred heart School we feel that students should have the opportunity to extend
their existing knowledge and skills in KS4 PE. The emphasis is on developing
themselves further and making choices to specialise in preferred PE and Sports
activities in the Core PE programme.
We do this by offering activities which will help them during and after they leave
school. These include opportunities to gain nationally recognised qualifications in PE
and Sport. We also make use of community sports coaches to widen their physical
activity knowledge within lessons and out of school hours.
We want our students to achieve more from PE than just the experience of taking
part, we want to give them the confidence to use what they have learnt in their
young adult life and life long fitness, health and activity.
