Dear Parents/Guardians, We began a novel study on Stone Fox last

December 5, 2016
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We began a novel study on Stone Fox
last week. There are ten chapters in this novel.
We will take a quiz on Tuesday on Ch 1-5 and
the following Tuesday on Ch 6-10. The
students have created word rings with their
vocabulary. There will be about 14 vocab
words on the first quiz. The quizzes will
include multiple choice questions about the
vocabulary and multiple choice comprehension
questions.
We have started a chapter on division in
Math. We will complete little more than half the
chapter before the end of the quarter and
before Christmas. When we return after
Christmas we will review division of three and
four digit dividends with remainders and be
ready for a chapter test in the second week of
the third quarter.
The students’ research about their
respective Indian tribes is going well. I did
want to clarify that the research is not assigned
as homework. Students may choose to work
on the research at home but they DO NOT
HAVE TO. Students at this age struggle with
finding websites that contain accurate
information that is at their reading level. The
list of websites that I have provided for them, is
my attempt to make sure they have some
accurate, safe, and reliable sources.
Unfortunately, these addresses are very long
and cumbersome to type out. Sometimes this
can be expedited by typing until you get to the
“.org”. This should take you to the home page
where you can find a link to the page about the
specific tribe.
Another hurdle fourth graders have with
the research process is being able to read a
paragraph or so of information at a time, digest
the information and then put the information in
their own words. I have given them specific
questions to help them zero in on what is
important. However, sometimes students just
want to copy word for word from a source.
When I look at the student’s notes and grading
the notes, I am looking to see if it sounds like a
4th grader. I am looking to make sure the
students have not merely copied a long
complex sentence or paragraph, but rather that
the student wrote a note that sounds like 4th
grade shorthand. If they are not able to locate
the answer to a particular question in their
notes they should go on to other questions. If
they finish with all of their questions and there
is just one or two they could not answer, it is
not a problem. Students should just not leave
too many holes in their notes.
The students are not writing a formal
report or speech for this project. They are
constructing a mural. They are then presenting
the mural with their group. They will be
required to speak to the class about what they
learned. For example, “My part of this project
was ______, ________, ____________, and
____________. I learned that ……” Each
person in the group will speak for less than two
minutes. If students need prompting I will ask
questions similar to their notes. Students
received a rubric on Thursday to give an idea
of how the mural, notes, and presentation will
be graded.
I looked too far ahead in my lesson
plans last week and accidentally posted a
Health quiz over lessons 1 and 2. The quiz is
actually Wednesday of this week. Students
are remembering what they learned in previous
grades about nutrients and food groups. The
quiz will be open book. I do not anticipate any
difficulties.

Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on
place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area
models. (Grade 4 expectations in this domain are limited to whole numbers less than or equal to 1,000,000. A range of algorithms may be
used.)
Solve multistep word problems with whole numbers and having whole number answers using the four operations including problems in
which the remainder must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for an unknown quantity. Assess
the reasonableness of an answer using mental computation including estimation strategies including rounding
