William
Hesketh
Lever
William Hesketh Lever was
born in Bolton, Lancashire
and was the son of a grocer.
He left school when he was
16 to join the family firm.
Lever became best known for
Sunlight Soap, Port Sunlight
Village, the Lady Lever Art
Gallery and being a collector!
Lever started collecting art to
help advertise Sunlight Soap
and over his lifetime collected over 20,000 wonderful
objects to help fill the Lady Lever Art Gallery.
Did you know he liked to sleep in the open air, got up
at 4.30am every morning and only liked cold baths?

Find the set of miniature portraits
which are hidden in a drawer
in this room. The miniatures are
between 150 – 300 years old.
What do you think has been
braided inside this miniature?
This is a Buddhist
altar ornament.
The leaves spouting
from the vase on the
elephant’s back are made
from green jade and the berries
from red coral. The elephant is
the Chinese symbol of peace.

Find this portrait of Lever
by Augustus John.
Lever disliked this painting of
himself so much that he cut
out his face from the portrait
and hid it away in his safe.
The rest of the painting was
accidentally sent back to the
artist minus the head. Oops!
Draw Lever’s head in the
box so it can be reunited
with his body. If you look
closely at the original
painting you can see where the join around
the head has been stuck back in place.

Napoleon was one of Lever’s heroes.
Lever collected all the Napoleon
objects on display in this room.
Unfortunately some of the objects turned
out not to have been Napoleon’s at all!
Can you find a gruesome death
mask of Napoleon made of bronze?
Follow the arrows to discover these objects and their stories on your
trail around the Gallery. Shade the signs when you find them to
show that William Hesketh Lever added them to his collection.
