Complete the other half of this drawing. LEveR coLlEcTs TraIl William Hesketh Lever William Hesketh Lever was born in Bolton, Lancashire and was the son of a grocer. He left school when he was 16 to join the family firm. Lever became best known for Sunlight Soap, Port Sunlight Village, the Lady Lever Art Gallery and being a collector! Lever started collecting art to help advertise Sunlight Soap and over his lifetime collected over 20,000 wonderful objects to help fill the Lady Lever Art Gallery. Did you know he liked to sleep in the open air, got up at 4.30am every morning and only liked cold baths? RoOm 26 Find the set of miniature portraits which are hidden in a drawer in this room. The miniatures are between 150 – 300 years old. What do you think has been braided inside this miniature? This is a Buddhist altar ornament. The leaves spouting from the vase on the elephant’s back are made from green jade and the berries from red coral. The elephant is the Chinese symbol of peace. rooM 7 ROoM 26 Find this portrait of Lever by Augustus John. Lever disliked this painting of himself so much that he cut out his face from the portrait and hid it away in his safe. The rest of the painting was accidentally sent back to the artist minus the head. Oops! Draw Lever’s head in the box so it can be reunited with his body. If you look closely at the original painting you can see where the join around the head has been stuck back in place. rooM 9 Napoleon was one of Lever’s heroes. Lever collected all the Napoleon objects on display in this room. Unfortunately some of the objects turned out not to have been Napoleon’s at all! Can you find a gruesome death mask of Napoleon made of bronze? Follow the arrows to discover these objects and their stories on your trail around the Gallery. Shade the signs when you find them to show that William Hesketh Lever added them to his collection. roOm 19 (norTh Rotunda) ROoM 30 Cinerarium This is a Roman ash chest which was made about 1900 years ago for the ashes of Caius Perperna Geminus, who died when he was 68. What do you think it’s made from? room 3 Haycarting by George Stubbs George Stubbs was from Liverpool and best known as a horse painter. He was interested in painting techniques which would be more permanent. This painting looks like an oil painting but was actually made of pottery and painted with en – – – ls. rooM 4 Queen Victoria by Sir David Wilkie rOOm 25 16th century games board Queen Victoria really disliked this portrait by Wilkie! Why do you think she disliked it? This board is around 400 years old and can be used to play chess and backgammon. How many animals and insects can you find on the board? RoOm 6 ROOM 10 (MaIn HaLl) Lady Gertrude Fitzpatrick by Joshua Reynolds A family story about this painting of Lady Gertrude Fitzpatrick says that she was shy and hid under a table, so artist Sir Joshua Reynolds decided to paint her just as she was. What is Gertrude holding? The Daphnephoria by Frederick Leighton This was one of Lever’s favourite paintings! Room 35 (South VestIbule) Ro0m 7 Figure of Guanyin Wedgwood fireplace This figure is of Guanyin, the Goddess of M – – – –. It has an inscription which shows that it was the gift of a man named Dang and his wife Chong. Port Sunlight Museum and Garden Village Look out of the window. What can you see?
