PALESTRA The Research Station “Chiquitos“ in Bolivia Introduction and running projects Local: Auditório do Centro de Biodiversidade da UFMT Data: 03/11/16 -14:00h A palestra será ministrada em inglês Aim of this talk is a formal introduction and advertisement of the station which offers unique research opportunities. The station was inaugurated in 2009 and until then hosted already over 70 scientists of more than 13 countries for research stays. Former and recent projects of the Senckenberg Research Institute, one of the operators of the station, are presented. Palestrante: MARTIN JANSEN Dr. phil. nat. Energetic constraints therefore force a trade-off between sexual advertisement and other activities critical for survival, and this trade-off most probably led to the evolution of strategies that maintain calling performance. This is especially true for those frogs that continuously and sustainably call for hours, such as territorial frog species of the genus Leptodactylus. The talk introduces techniques of automated bioacoustic monitoring and IR videotaping to throw light upon nocturnal frog communication, and presents preliminary results regarding the impressive performances of male frogs. Regarding this incredible number, it becomes apparent that taxonomy has a huge task to shoulder, namely to accelerate species descriptions to serve science and society. The talk will give an introduction to recent approaches in modern taxonomy. The “father of modern taxonomy”, Carl Linnaeus, but as well the “species problem” (What is a species?) will of course be touched in the talk. Besides, taxonomist today realize that taxonomy will no longer be tightly linked with description of patterns and species, but instead should go hand in hand with studies on species delimitation and processes of generating biodiversity.
