WEST VIEW NURSING & REHABILITATION CENTER THE VIEW POINT Hello Everyone, July 1, 2016 Welcome to our July edition of The View Point. We are now officially into our summer season and the weather has been beautiful. As I write this letter, we are approaching our first cookout and concert. Reggie Centracchio and his band are great friends of West View and their music is just what the doctor ordered. This month we celebrate a very special birthday. A commeration of our country’s birth on the 4th of July. How lucky are we that our founding fathers (and mothers) were so courageous and brilliant to create such a great country. Our weekly bus rides will begin regularly every Wednesday and I hope you take advantage of at least one and enjoy the trip. We are continuing our wine & cheese events, they seem to be well received, please stop by and enjoy. Our July calendar is looking very good with events and activities that will appeal to everyone. Congratulations to our June Whatever It Takes Winner Sandy Kenyon. While Sandy is a previous winner, she was nominated over and over again for her commitment to West View and our residents. Thank you Sandy! We are waiting news of a new baby. Pam Masciarotte, our Social Service Director, is awaiting the birth of her second child any time now with husband Matt. We will keep you informed! Best Wishes, Hugh Hall “The days are longer and we can enjoy the outside more along with all the fresh fruit and vegetables that are plentiful.” A Tasty Twist on the Classic BLT Summer Concert & Family Night Cookout Avocado BLT Wednesday, July 13th at 6:00pm LuAnn Dutra Avacado BLT with Fresh Mozzarella can be made ahead and wrapped up for lunch or a picnic. Dress it up with cheese, onion, avocado and salad greens. 8 slices (1/2 –inch or about 1/2 ounce) roasted garlic bread or other favorite bread. 2 Tble butter, softened 8 slices cooked thick bacon 1 cup mixed salad greens 8 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, cut Red onion slices, optional 1 large tomato, sliced Salt and pepper to taste 1/4 cup cilantro leaves, optional into 1/4 inch slices 1 large ripe avocado, halved, pitted and sliced Have ready a panini maker, a George Foreman-type grill or a skillet. For each sandwich, butter one side of each slice of bread. Build your sandwich starting with one slice of the bread, butter side down. Place a layer of salad greens; red onion slices, if using; tomato slices; 2 slices cooked bacon; 2 slices mozzarella and several slices of avocado with salt and pepper to taste and 1 tablespoon cilantro leaves. Top with another slice of bread, butter side up. Place in the panini maker or grill and follow manufacturer’s instructions for cooking. Or place in the skillet and cook until golden brown on one side; turn over and cook other side. Congratulations! Sandy Kenyon June’s Whatever It Takes Award Winner! CHAPLAIN’S CORNER INDEPENDENCE DAY JULY 4th “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” -Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776 On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. On July 2nd, the members voted for independence passing a resolution that “these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be free and independent States. “It took the delegates two days to agree on a formal document announcing their actions. The Continental Congress President John Hancock, and Secretary, Charles Thompson, signed the rough draft that day. The official signing of the Declaration of Independence took place on August 2, 1776 by the 55 other delegates. Well, here we are in the midst of summer. A time in which we leave our busy winter schedules. A time when the momentum of our life is interrupted, and a time for relaxation. Summer is a time to give thanks for, using the words of Carl Sandber, “For the laughter of children who tumble barefooted and bareheaded in the summer grass.” Summer delivers us from too much seriousness. Summer is also a time of stories. A time to read stories, to discover new stories. Loren Eisley, the biologist, tells the summer story of the star thrower. The star thrower is a man who walks the beach and carefully throws any starfish he sees washed up on the shore back into the ocean. Asked one day, “why do you do that? There are so many beaches and so many starfish washed up on the shores of the world! What difference does it make that you threw that starfish back in to the water? The star thrower replies, It makes all the difference in the world to that star fish!” And so it is in our lives. Sometimes we think, what difference can I make when there are so many needy people and only one of me. It’s impossible for one person to do it all, but if we can make a difference in just one person’s life by a smile, kind word, etc., we would have made a difference, a difference in the world of that one person. Let’s not forget July 4th is more that just a holiday with family cookouts, it’s our country’s birthday and the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Happy July!
