Last day for staff
Last day for students
Last day for kindergarten
We have short listed and will be hiring in the next two weeks for our two teachers, Mrs. Rogers, and
Mrs. Prevost, who are leaving the teaching profession. We are also sending a farewell and congratulations to Mrs. Adrienne Sprecker who will no longer be on secondment and will move permanently
as the NLSD Early Learning Lead Teacher. We look forward to having her work with teachers and
parents in the coming year. Our staffing is being organized for the 2014- 2015 school year and plans
are underway to create balanced class lists. Your child’s teacher placement for next year will be
available at the ‘Meet the Teacher‘ afternoon on August 29, 2014.
Class supply lists for next year will be sent home with the report cards or you may use the Back to

If your child is moving to Aurora Middle School, transition plans have been in place for the last few
months and in specific cases since the beginning of grade three. As well, transition planning is underway for all remaining students moving up to the next grade. Many of you will be hearing from
your child’s teacher in order to arrange a time for the final IPP/transition meeting. This is a good
time to review the progress your child has made and to help plan the beginning direction for next
year.
A personal ‘thank you!’ to our School Council and LLB Active Kids Society executive for the outstanding job they have done this year in making a difference for the students of Vera M. Welsh. Not
only do they volunteer their time helping with student activities, but they have given their days, evenings, to take part in staff interviews, NLSD Board input sessions, and meetings in Cold Lake and
Glendon.

Tips For Healthy Summer Barbecue season
S
ummer and the season
of barbecues is coming
soon!
Did you know that
barbecues can include
healthy foods and still taste
great? Here are some tips to
get you started.
Just a reminder for parents
to start returning library
books as June and the end
of the year is fast approaching. Thanks!
Meat: Look for lean cuts of
meat or poultry without skin.
Choose fish and shellfish for
variety. Grill your meat,
poultry or fish with your
preferred herbs and spices,
without added salt.
VMW/Active Kids Society Cookbooks are
on sale for $10.00 each at the
office.
All proceeds will go towards the
new playground.
The deadline for ordering Memory Books

Have a safe and enjoyable
Meatless: Try barbequed
tofu! Use firm or extra firm
tofu and season with herbs
and spices or marinade.
Rub with a non stick cooking
spray or oil so tofu won’t
stick to the grill. Grill for 6-7
minutes per side.
Kabobs: Cut up colourful
vegetables such as bell
peppers, onions, zucchini,
mushrooms, and tomatoes
and cook them on a kabob
stick. Let everyone in the
family pick what they want
and make their own kabobs.
Sides: Bake potatoes or
yams wrapped in aluminum
foil on the barbecue. This
method also works very well
with corn on the cob or
vegetables.
Salads: Offer raw
vegetables or green salad
as a side dish with the meal.
Mix low fat plain yogurt with
ingredients such as lemon
or lime juice, herbs and
spices to make tasty dips
and dressings. Add
chickpeas, beans or lentils
to salads to add variety and
Dessert: Try grilled
pineapple rings, plums or
peaches with a little bit of
low fat yogurt. Or, take
advantage of ripe seasonal
fruit such as berries and
watermelon. Serve them cut
up for everyone to enjoy.
Grilled chicken breast on
whole grain bun (you can
lightly toast the bun on the
barbeque too!)
Red, green and yellow
peppers, cherry tomatoes
and mushroom kabob
Baked sweet potato
Grilled pineapple and
peaches for dessert!
With these tips in mind, you
can plan your next barbecue
to include healthy foods.
Drinks: Make your own
flavoured water using lemon
or lime wedges, mint leaves
or frozen berries.

Boost Safety for your children with a Booster Seat
Bike Safety Presentation update:
S

Biche Sporting Goods has generously donated one
bicycle for a draw. Tickets for the draw will be $1.00
each and all proceeds with go to the Active Kids Society Playground Fund. Students can bring money for

protein.
afety experts strongly recommend
the use of booster seats for
children who have outgrown child
safety seats but are too small to fit into
the existing adult seat belt systems?
Why use a booster seat?
A child is 3 and a half times more
likely to be hurt in a crash when using
an adult seat belt alone than when
buckled in a booster seat.
An adult seat belt alone does not
properly fit a child's body.
When children ride in booster seats,
they can see out of the windows.
Using a booster seat until a child is at
least 80 lb (36 kg) or 9 years of age or
4’9” (145 cm) tall provides the safest
ride.
