GENOA MIDDLE SCHOOL Volume XIII, No. 1 August, 2010 Dear Parents and Students, Welcome new and old Jaguars! Opening day is just around the corner. Please take the time to read the material in this packet: it contains tips and information for a successful start of the year at Genoa Middle School. Our primary focus is improving student achievement and developing productive citizens. The Administration and Staff are committed to providing a safe learning environment where all students are expected to learn. Please take a moment with your child to let them know your expectations. Should you ever have a concern please contact Mr. Johnson or myself. Our School Resource Officer, Sara Rath, is also available to assist you. We have several new staff members that are joining our Genoa Family. At this time, I would like to welcome Ms. Carly Young, 6th grade LA/SS, and Ms. Stacey Roeber, 7th grade LA and 8th grade SS. There are several important dates coming up, the first of which is schedule pick-up. August 18th and 19th have been set aside for schedule pick-up. Students may pick up their schedule on August 18th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. or 6:00-8:00 p.m. August 19th pick up is from 9:00-11:00 a.m. During schedule pick up please take the opportunity to join the Genoa Parent Teacher Student Association. Your support and assistance helps make Genoa the place to be! While students may not admit it, your participation is appreciated and needed by your child. Thank you to the PTSA for funding the numerous reward programs and activities for the students. We appreciate the extra hands that’s parents can supply in the front office. If you have a couple of hours a week to help answer phones or work the welcome desk, please complete the form at the back of the newsletter and return to the office. Open house/Curriculum Night is scheduled for September 15th. We hope you will join us, as you will have an opportunity to walk through your child’s schedule and meet their teachers. You will find a section in the newsletter entitled Important Dates. Please mark your calendars with the dates of Interims and Report Cards. Barry Ackerman Principal GENOA MIDDLE SCHOOL 5948 S. One of the committee’s recommendations which the Board eagerly accepted was to encourage students to participate in community service activities - activities that a person performs for the benefit of his or her local community without pay; for example volunteering at community events such as Westerville’s Fall Fest and Leadership Westerville’s Service Day, picking up trash at a neighborhood park or playground, working at a community food bank such as Caring & Sharing or Westerville’s Area Resource Ministry (W.A.R.M.), taking food to people who are homebound and visiting with them, assisting an elderly neighbor with chores, helping at a local animal shelter or beautifying our community by planting flowers or trees. During this fourth year of implementation (2010-11), the Board is requesting each student in the district in grades 3-12 complete at least three (3) hours of community service by May 13, 2011. The actual activity performed will be up to the student and parents. Enter information on any/all community service activities used to fulfill the three hour commitment, making sure to complete all sections of the form. Once finished, the form should be returned to your student’s school as indicated: Elementary students, grades 3 – 5, should return the form to their classroom teacher, Middle school students, grades 6 – 8, should return the form to their guidance counselor, and High school students, grades 9 – 12, should return the form to their guidance counselor. ****************************************************************************** Student Name: ___________________________________________________________ Grade Level: _____ Classroom/Homeroom Teacher_______________________________ Date Site # of Hours Student’s Signature Parent’s Signature Site Supervisor’s Signature & Work Number Why is this activity an example of community service? ___________________________________________________________________________ 5 ATTENDANCE NOTES SHOULD YOUR STUDENT NEED TO BE ABSENT FROM SCHOOL, PLEASE CALL THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE TO LET US KNOW. It has been fully imple‐ mented in all three high schools and a few other middle schools. The program consists of students, teachers, and staff working together to recognize all of the positive things going on at our school. We officially started the program last year. You may have seen the birthday board in our main hallway, have had a student bring home a coupon booklet for making the honor roll, or noticed the large display of stars on the wall by the cafeteria recognizing stu‐ dents who have made academic growth. These are just a few of the things that together teachers and students as Renaissance have started around our school. We are so pleased with the interest from students and staff in the Renaissance program that we are eager to continue building and expanding this year. If your son/daughter is interested in join‐ ing Genoa Renaissance, have them contact Miss Stimer or Mrs. Christoff. We are always looking for new faces! In addition, we are looking for parent volunteers. Please contact Miss Stimer or Mrs. Christoff for more information.
