Week 8, beginning 3/4/2013:
Thesis: The childhood shows the man, as morning shows the day.
John Milton, quoted on page 53 of Mardy Grothe’s i never
metaphor i didn’t like.
Tuesday, 3/5/2013:
• Writing Lab: I’ll check on progress. You’re in the final stretch, for all needs to
be completed by Friday, March 15.
• Salvation Response: Hand in the rewrite of your response to Langston
Hughes’s “Salvation.” Make sure that you attach the previous version to the
back.
• Sander’s Quiz: I’ll hand back your Sander’s quiz and we’ll briefly discuss the
heart of his matter. We’ll also discuss how you might structure a response to his
essay.
• Alexie Quiz: I’ll give you a quiz on the reading in Alexie’s The Absolutely True
Diary of a Part-Time Indian as well as on the movie Smoke Signals.
• Groups: As I mentioned last Thursday, you’ll get into groups to discuss and
present the main points that Alexie is making in his chapters.
• Grammar: As time permits, we’ll do some grammar exercises. In particular I
want to discuss the various ways in which nouns can be modified.
• Smoke Signals: We’ll also continue viewing and discussing Smoke Signals.
Homework due Thursday, 3/7:
1. Reading: Read Chapters 9 through 13, pages 67 through 100, in Sherman
Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Of course, you
should expect a quiz on this reading.
2. Journal: 1) For each chapter briefly describe the conflict, turning point and
resolution. 2) Now use these elements to formulate a thesis for each chapter.
3) Examine Arnold Spirit Junior’s drawings. How do the drawings relate to
the chapters? To the theses? 4) You should always be looking for and recording in your journal the heart of the matter that. Is it the same for each
chapter? Is it evolving?
