The Amazon Rainforest
Rainforest Details
Tropical rainforests cover less than one tenth of the land
in the world. It is very humid or damp in the rainforests.
It is humid because the temperature is 75 or more
degrees Fahrenheit each day…..so it is warm all year long
there.
The Rainforest is FULL of life!
Do you like rainforests? We DO! The Amazon rainforest
is home to 427 mammals, many of them endangered. It is
also home to 1,300 different kinds of birds. The most
dangerous animal in the rainforest is the poison dart frog.
It is also a popular place for insects, like the peanut head
bug.
The Amazon Rainforest is the largest one on the planet.
It is located in South America, and is mostly in the
country of Brazil. The Amazon River runs through the
forest and provides the moisture that keeps it so humid
there.
In addition to the animals and insects, there is a LOT of
plant life of many different sizes and shapes. Some of
these plants are really important, like the rosy periwinkle
that is used in a drug to treat childhood cancer.
Endangered Species
Please help endangered species in the Amazon Rainforest!
Jaguars are an endangered species of cat. Jaguars look
like leopards, but they have different spot patterns.
Jaguars can SWIM! Sometimes jaguars hunt in the
water, but sometimes they go in the water just to cool
down. Jaguars are super amazing!!
Should Rainforests Be Saved?
We strongly believe that rainforests should be
saved. Here’s why:
➢
Many animals live there because it’s warm all
year long.
➢
Many insects live in the forest and make
their homes in the trees and soil.
➢
Sadly, because many people hunt and kill the
animals for food or for their skins, there are
species that have already been wiped out.
What Can You Do To Help?
As third graders, one of the easiest and most useful
things you can do to help save the rainforest is to USE
LESS PAPER! That means that you should recycle paper
or reuse paper….write on the back side of paper that has
been used once. Or you can do things electronically, like
read this newsletter on your computer screen!
We hope you will consider helping us in our effort to
SAVE THE AMAZON RAINFOREST!
