Bonnie Hays Keeps Getting Better
Tales
Summer 2012
Issue 29
By Deborah Wood, Animal Services Manager
Almost every day, I get the same
question: “Isn’t it sad to work at
the shelter?”
I answer the question by saying,
“If you were a stray cat or dog,
you’d want to live in Washington
County.” Clearly, people who
think this is a sad place haven’t
been to the Bonnie L. Hays
Shelter lately. The changes that
we have made in our shelter
over the last few years have
made it virtually unrecognizable
from the shelter it used to be.
Bonnie Hays is now a place of
hope, joy and possibilities.
This morning when I drove up
to the shelter, I saw a volunteer
with a big smile on her face,
walking one of our long-time
resident pit bulls. The dog was
looking up at her—a matching
smile on his big, doggie face.
At Bonnie Hays, the dog gets
three potty walks a day.
He’s socialized and loved
by volunteers and staff.
from their lemonade stands.
We’re a place where kindhearted people adopt senior
kitties and dogs that need a little
extra training.
Dr. Nicole Putney, DVM, joins Bonnie
Hays in July 2012 as our full-time staff
veterinarian in charge of shelter medicine.
For most of the dogs and cats
that are here, this is the best
place they’ve ever been.
Our shelter is a place where
more than 140 active volunteers
donate at least two hours a week
to make the lives of the dogs and
cats better. We’re a vital part of
the community where children—
troops of Girl Scouts and Cub
Scouts and school groups and
even kids celebrating their
birthdays—come to bring food
for the cats and dogs and money
It keeps getting better…
Our shelter is about to get
even better. In July, we will
go from having a part-time
veterinarian, whose main job
is to spay/neuter pets prior to
adoption, to a full-time staff
veterinarian in charge of shelter
medicine. Unlike most public
animal shelters in America, we
do not euthanize any healthy
animals. While we are proud of
this accomplishment, there is
more to do. Most of the animals
that come to us don’t meet
the definition of “healthy.” They
need medical intervention or
behavioral help to become
adoptable. We’re providing
help for most of the unhealthy
animals that need a boost.

Rabies Vaccines
A Life-Saving Measure
In a frightening incident at the end of May, a dog in
Gaston picked up a live bat in her mouth. The bat
tested positive for rabies—which meant that the
dog was exposed to this deadly disease.
Happily, she had a current rabies vaccine. She was
revaccinated against the disease and placed on a
strict, well-monitored home quarantine program for
45 days. If the dog hadn’t had a current vaccine,
she would have faced a 6-month quarantine which
probably would have been at the shelter.
While rabies isn’t common, we’ve had five
confirmed reports of rabid bats in Washington
County since 2000.
Keep your pets current on vaccines so that they
can stay safe (and at home) if they ever come
into contact with a potentially rabid bat.
If you see a bat that is acting in an unusual
fashion—flying during the day, roosting in the sun, or
struggling to fly—keep children and pets away and
contact Washington County Environmental Health
at 503-846-8388.

Commitment?
You Can Foster Kittens
Care for a momma cat and
her litter by fostering them
temporarily in your home.
We have an especially great
need for foster parents in the
Spring, Summer and early Fall.

contact our animal shelter
technicians at 503-846-7039.
BLH Alumni Spotlight
Walk into The Artfull
Garden in downtown Hillsboro, and
you will be greeted
by Ollie, a 14-yearold Bonnie L. Hays
Alum who has
devoted her life
to making people
happy. She spends
her days in this
unique shop that
features the work of
over 90 artisans as
well as candy,
coffee, and pastries.
Customers are so
Photo courtesy of The Artfull Garden
used to seeing her
in her usual spot by
the candy counter that Ollie often works even
on her mistress’ days off, so as not to disappoint
her fans. Ollie was only four months old when
Kay Mattson spotted her on her third trip to the
shelter and knew that she had found the right
dog for her family. Mattson already had two BLH
Alumni kitties—clearly she is a pro at finding great
pets at the shelter. Mattson suggests that people
research various breeds ahead of time so that
they are more familiar with the exercise, training,
and grooming requirements that may come with
their new shelter friend. “Have your criteria,” says
Mattson, “and don’t be afraid to wait if it is not
right.” Mattson’s patience and persistence paid off
and Ollie is a great example of another awesome
Bonnie L. Hays Alum.
We love our BLH Alumni! Send us your stories of
animals who were adopted from our shelter and
have gone on to great things—we just might
feature them in a future newsletter.
Fostering is Fun!
Look how much fun Shadow is having fostering kittens.
This sweet Golden Retriever was adopted from Bonnie
Hays by one of our volunteers, Kim Farrenkopf. Shadow
is incredibly patient with his tiny temporary friends and
we really appreciate both Kim and Shadow.

some of the items that the animals need most:

•Cat toys (no catnip please)
•Kong toys for dogs
•Tongue depressors and/or popsicle craft sticks
•Gallons of unscented liquid bleach

And, of course, cash to help the animals is always welcome. (Remember, 100

overhead or administrative fees to your donated money.)
Manager’s
Corner,
continued from page 1
With the addition of a
full-time veterinarian, our
goal is to provide every
potentially adoptable
animal with the help it
needs to get well and
find a new home.
I am so proud of where
we are today—and
even more excited
for our future. We are
unrecognizable from
the shelter that we used
to be. The promise of
what we are becoming
is something that makes
me wake up every day
and think how happy I
am to work at the shelter.
Banfield Pet Hospital Donations
Fozzie was a little dog who was in big trouble. The sweet poodle mix had
apparently been hit by a car on Highway 26, but it took a number of days
to catch him. He arrived at the shelter terrified and with a shattered front
leg that was impossible to heal. Luckily for Fozzie, Banfield Pet Hospital was
able to help.
The new Banfield Pet Hospital on Barnes Road celebrated its grand
opening by providing over $18,000 worth of free services to 36 Bonnie Hays
shelter animals that needed special medical intervention to be adopted.
They performed teeth cleaning and extractions on older animals, which
meant that adopters wouldn’t face hundreds of dollars in dental bills (a big
deterrent to adopting an older pet). They also treated animals with serious skin problems and sent them
back to the shelter with enough medication to complete the treatment.
And Fozzie?
After many tests, Banfield determined that Fozzie would be much better off without this leg and
amputated it.
Within just a couple of days, Fozzie (fondly known as a “tripod” now) was
scampering around, and a few weeks later he was adopted by
a Banfield employee!

Donate Used Items Donate used clothing and
household items through the GivSmart Program.
Simply call GivSmart LLC, our fundraising partner,
at 800-789-0719 or log on at www.givsmart.com to
schedule a pick up. Be sure to tell them that you
are supporting the Bonnie Hays Shelter.
Donate One of the best ways to help the animals
at Bonnie L. Hays is to make a financial contribution
to the shelter. 100% of your contribution goes
directly toward animal care.
•$20 pays for one day of care for an animal
•$30 spays one fertile animal
•$100 microchips 25 cats or dogs
Take up a special collection or offering for the
animals. Volunteer as a group at the shelter.
Please call volunteer coordinator Shirley Toth at
503-846-7149 for more information.
•$1,000 treats the entire shelter population with a
flea preventative
Donate your Vehicle Donate your unwanted
vehicle through our Cars Fur Care Program. It’s a
great way to support the animals while getting
rid of a car, boat, RV, motorcycle, or four-wheel
recreational vehicle. Fill in our Cars Fur Care vehicle
donation form at www.washingtoncountypets.com.
All you need is the title and the vehicle must have
an engine and be towable.
Honor or remember a loved one through a special
gift. We will send the honoree—or his or her family—
a special letter to notify him or her of your gift and
you will receive a letter suitable for tax purposes.
We rely on your donations of cat and dog food
and pet supplies. We are especially in need of high
quality dry kitten food and small bite dog food such
as Iams, Castor and Pollux, Science Diet, Natural
Balance and Eukanuba.
Student employees of the Eastwood Elementary School Student Store
made a big difference in the lives of the animals at the Bonnie L. Hays
Small Animal Shelter. They used $500 of their store profits to purchase food
and other items and delivered it all to our shelter. The students toured the
shelter and met some of the animals helped by their generosity.

Show Dogs
Helping Shelter
Dogs & Cats
About 230 dogs come to our
overnight kennels from police
agencies every year. Since the
shelter can’t be open 24/7, those
dogs spend the night in the safe
haven of our kennels until our staff
comes in the next morning and
brings them into the shelter.
The building that provides the
dogs of Washington County with a
secure, dry, and heated temporary
refuge was made possible by a
$20,000 donation from the Tualatin
Kennel Club. Previously, the dogs
had to be left in outside kennels.
We did what we could to keep the
dogs warm and safe – including
wrapping the kennels in tarps and
hanging heat lamps. Still, on the
coldest nights, our staff would risk
their lives to come out in the ice
and snow in the dark to bring the
animals safely inside.
The new building is also a safe
place to keep the food for the
shelter animals. The shelter’s
previous food storage area was
susceptible to rodents. The new
building is rodent-resistant. Because
it is heated and has fans to cool it,
the food will last longer.
Tualatin Kennel Club showed their
compassion for all animals and
gave a big boost to the Bonnie
L. Hays Small Animal Shelter with
their donation in January. The
Tualatin Kennel Club is an all-breed
dog club that holds dog shows
in conjunction with the Rose City
Classic. Their gift to Bonnie Hays is
the biggest community donation
to any cause in the history of the
Tualatin Kennel Club.
Thank You!
We couldn’t do what we do every day
without the hundreds of donations of
food and other supplies we receive every
year. There are too many individuals and
companies to name but make no mistake
about it—your generosity means the world
to the animals and the people who care for
them every day. Because of your generosity,
our animals have warm beds, full tummies
and extra comforts that help make them
ready for their forever homes.
