• Cheese-It Area Activity- Students use crackers to find the area of
given plane figures. Each cracker is equal to one square unit.
•Cheese-It Perimeter Activity- Students use crackers to find the
perimeter of given plane figures. Each cracker side length is equal
to one unit.
• Make Your Own- Students make their own plane figure with
crackers and then find its area and perimeter.
• Area and Distributive Property Activity- In Part 1 students create
an array using their crackers. For Part 2 students will divide the
array or area model from Part 1 to make two new arrays
(distributive property).
• Area Work Mats- Students will recognize that area is additive by
composing and decomposing area models. Crackers not needed- can
be done with other manipulatives or drawings.
• Area of Rectilinear Figures Activity- Students create a rectilinear
shape using crackers. Students will find the area of the rectilinear
shape by decomposing it into 2 rectangular figures and then finding
the area of each and adding to find the total area.
• Area of Rectilinear Figures Activity- same as above but can be
completed without crackers. Use other manipulatives or drawings.

Area of Rectilinear Figures
Directions: Create a rectilinear figure by creating 2
rectangular arrays out of your crackers. To find the area,
separate the figure into 2 rectangles and then add the areas
of each to find the area of the whole.
