WINTER SUN FACTS You don’t have to go south to get sunburned during the winter – UV rays are present even during the winter. • • • Snow reflects up to 80% of UV rays, which bounce off the ground. This means that you can be burned in unusual areas such as under the chin. The Atmosphere filters 4% fewer UV rays every 1000 feet above sea level. The higher up the hill snowboarders and skiers are, the higher their risk of serious sunburn. THE CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY RECOMMENDS TO USE YOUR SUNSENSE • • • • Use sunscreen and lip balm with UV protection with a SPF 15 or higher Wear a hat that protects the face, neck and ears. Wear a long sleeved shirt even on warmer winter days. Wear sunglasses, wrap-around goggles or a visor that provide 100% UV protection. The sun can burn unprotected eyes which can cause snow blindness. A sneak peek at the fun and entertainment that will take place at Relay this year... We’re really excited as we begin planning the entertainment and activities that will keep everyone energized throughout the entire Relay day and night! There will be lots to do so whether you are young or young at heart your toes will be tapping and you will be busy. You’ve given us lots of positive feedback from last year’s event so we’re bringing back some favourites. We’re also looking at some new and different activities for people of all ages, abilities and energy levels. We think we have all the bases of Shaw Park covered with: • Mark from Gopher the Music is back to keep us moving and grooving all through the night • Jason from Out in Left Field Productions will keep you entertained and informed with video and graphics on the big screen • No Winnipeg Relay would be complete without the fabulous ladies and their motivating Zumba sessions. Lesly will warm everyone up before we kick off and CELEBRATE with the Opening Ceremony and she’ll be back to motivate us a little later in the evening before we REMEMBER at the Luminary Ceremony. “It’s darkest before the dawn” and many of us may be feeling that way at 3 am so she’s back. • Darolyn will invigorate us in the wee hours of the night just before we launch the FIGHT BACK Ceremony. Relay For Life is a time for all of us to join together as one family, one community to CELBRATE, REMEMBER and FIGHT BACK against cancer. Bring your family – your children, your parents and your brothers and sisters – your friends and neighbours as well as your colleagues and team mates. You will be tired but you will be so inspired and you will be proud of being part of such a great event. Cancer doesn’t sleep and so for one night, neither shall we. Stay tuned for more updates………. Barb and Sharon, Resolve to quit smoking You CAN quit…and the Smokers’ Helpline can help I’m Leroy Kehler and I volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society warning others about the dangers of smoking, because cancer took my voice but not by determination. Every year I speak with thousands of school-aged children and community groups so they don’t make the same mistakes that I did. I know first hand about the dangers of smoking. Years ago I was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx and had to have it removed. Today, I have to speak with voice prosthesis. Today I am tobacco free which is great but I waited much too long to make that smart decision. As we kick off a new year and the Canadian Cancer Society’s 75th anniversary of fighting back against cancer, do yourself and your family a favour and resolve to quit smoking. You know all the reasons you should, and you can have a Quit Specialist help you come up with a quit plan or answer any of your questions about smoking, by calling the Canadian Cancer Society’ Smokers’ Helpline at 1-877-533-5333. We raised money to help people with can- My favorite memory of the cer and beat our fundraising whole night though, was when goal by 3 times. my mom and I walked a lap together at the beginning of the When we got there I saw a lady luminary ceremony and then stopped to hug at my aunt's have her hair shaved off to candle. I did this with my friends too, and we all shared stories about each person we made a luminary for. It was very sad, but wonderful all at once.
