Since the election, $58 million in new cancer initiatives have

WINTER SUN FACTS
You don’t have to go south to get sunburned during the winter – UV rays are
present even during the winter.
•
•
•
Snow reflects up to 80% of UV rays, which bounce off the ground. This
means that you can be burned in unusual areas such as under the chin.
The Atmosphere filters 4% fewer UV rays every 1000 feet above sea
level.
The higher up the hill snowboarders and skiers are, the higher their risk of serious sunburn.
THE CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY RECOMMENDS TO USE YOUR SUNSENSE
•
•
•
•
Use sunscreen and lip balm with UV protection with a SPF 15 or higher
Wear a hat that protects the face, neck and ears.
Wear a long sleeved shirt even on warmer winter days.
Wear sunglasses, wrap-around goggles or a visor that provide 100% UV protection. The sun can
burn unprotected eyes which can cause snow blindness.

Eight easy steps for being a successful Team Captain
1. Read your Team Captain Guide
• Find it online in your Participant Centre under “View our Participant Resources,” or click here. It contains tons of
important information to help you be a great Team Captain!
2. Recruit your team
• 10-14 participants is a great goal to strive for. If you have more, consider entering two teams and create some
friendly competition regarding who can raise the most money.
• Send e-mails through your online participant centre to encourage your friends, family and co-workers to join
your team. They will be given a link to your team page to register.
• Take advantage of the $10 Early Bird commitment fee (online and offline) and register your team before Feb.
28th.
3. Check out our new Team Captain Tools
• Go to “My Participant Centre” online and find “View our Team Captain Tools.” You will find printable posters,
invites, a thermometer to track your team’s progress, and other tools
4. Motivate your team
• Encourage your team to fundraise, whether it’s online, by asking people for pledges or by planning team fundraisers. Set an example by sharing your own fundraising successes or suggesting a team fundraiser.
• Pick a team theme and have fun with it. Plan costumes and campsite decorations for event night.
• Set a goal for your team to be part of our Fundraising Club.
• Have team meetings and celebrate your successes.
• Delegate duties among team members so they are responsible for campsite logistics, snacks, costumes, etc.
• Invite cancer survivors to join your team. Nothing is more motivational than fundraising in honor of a friend, family member or coworker.
5. Attend Team Captain Meetings
• You will receive more instructions on how to successfully fundraise
and how to prepare for event day, they also provide you with the
opportunity to meet and share ideas with other Team Captain
• Keep checking the Winnipeg Relay website for upcoming Team Captain meeting dates
6. Collect your team’s donations
• The captain is responsible for collecting donations from your team and filling out the team captain’s report to
turn in at your bank night.
• Please review your team members’ donation forms and money collected to make sure they balance. Watch out
for these bank nights to be announced shortly in the Relay Rap!
7. Celebrate your success
• Use Relay to celebrate your fundraising efforts for the Canadian Cancer Society.
• Gather your team to take part in the Celebrate Ceremony at 7pm, the Remember Ceremony at dusk and the
Fight Back Ceremony before you head home in the morning.
A sneak peek at the fun and entertainment that will take place at Relay this
year...
We’re really excited as we begin planning the entertainment and
activities that will keep everyone energized throughout the entire
Relay day and night!
There will be lots to do so whether you are young or young at
heart your toes will be tapping and you will be busy. You’ve
given us lots of positive feedback from last year’s event so we’re
bringing back some favourites. We’re also looking at some new
and different activities for people of all ages, abilities and energy
levels.
We think we have all the bases of Shaw Park covered with:
• Mark from Gopher the Music is back to keep us moving and
grooving all through the night
• Jason from Out in Left Field Productions will keep you entertained and informed with video and graphics on the big
screen
• No Winnipeg Relay would be complete without the fabulous
ladies and their motivating Zumba sessions. Lesly will warm
everyone up before we kick off and CELEBRATE with the
Opening Ceremony and she’ll be back to motivate us a little
later in the evening before we REMEMBER at the Luminary
Ceremony. “It’s darkest before the dawn” and many of us
may be feeling that way at 3 am so she’s back.
• Darolyn will invigorate us in the wee hours of the night just
before we launch the FIGHT BACK Ceremony.
Relay For Life is a time for all of us to join together as one
family, one community to CELBRATE, REMEMBER and FIGHT
BACK against cancer. Bring your family – your children, your parents and your brothers and sisters – your friends and neighbours
as well as your colleagues and team mates.
You will be tired but you will be so inspired and you will be proud
of being part of such a great event. Cancer doesn’t sleep and so
for one night, neither shall we.
Stay tuned for more updates……….
Barb and Sharon,
Resolve to quit smoking
You CAN quit…and the Smokers’ Helpline can help
I’m Leroy Kehler and I volunteer for the Canadian Cancer
Society warning others about
the dangers of smoking, because cancer took my voice
but not by determination.
Every year I speak with thousands of school-aged children
and community groups so they
don’t make the same mistakes
that I did.
I know first hand about the dangers of smoking.
Years ago I was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx and had to have it removed. Today, I have to
speak with voice prosthesis. Today I am tobacco
free which is great but I waited much too long to
make that smart decision.
As we kick off a new year and the Canadian Cancer Society’s 75th anniversary of fighting back
against cancer, do yourself and your family a favour and resolve to quit smoking.
You know all the reasons you should, and you can
have a Quit Specialist help you come up with a
quit plan or answer any of your questions about
smoking, by calling the Canadian Cancer Society’
Smokers’ Helpline at 1-877-533-5333. It can
