Back of Beyond Books 2013 Rare Book Catalogue
Number 9
Catalogue 9 features selections from our Native Americana collection.
These titles primarily are attempts to view Native Americans through numerous lenses from the mid
18th century through the 20th century. While there were strong advocates for the various bands of
Native Americans, we as a nation tended to see Natives as impediments to manifest destiny and a
threat to progress. This attitude was portrayed in sensational titles such as Indian Atrocities or Horrors of Indian Welfare. Historians scrambled to document a vanishing cultures through the Bureau
of American Ethnology and Smithsonian publications while artists such as George Catlin, Edward
Curtis and Thomas McKenney and James Hall left good records through paintings and sketches.
We hit the road in February and will exhibit at the Santa Monica Antiquarian International Book
Fair at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, February 9 & I0, 2013 then we’ll head north for the big
Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America’s 46th California International Antiquarian Book Fair
February 15-17 at the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco, CA. In April we’ll exhibit at
the Twenty-Second Albuquerque Antiquarian Book Fair and return to Denver for the Rocky Mountain Antiquarian Book Fair in August.
We are always looking for quality collections to purchase or even single titles. Give me a call if you
want to discuss down-sizing your collection or perhaps help in setting up a scope of collection or
advice on how to enhance your collecting skills.
Sincerely,
Andy Nettell
