Sixteen Farmington Public Schools’ students Commended by National Merit Scholarship Corporation Farmington, Michigan -- T he National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the Commended Students in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Sixteen Farmington Public Schools’ students are among the 34,000 of approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT. These distinguished students have received letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Students: Farmington High School Akili Echols Collin Finn Seth Fleming Spurthi Gubbala Emma Kull Leila Mullison Isha Nadgauda North Farmington High School Pooja Kapadia Isaac Miller James Whitener Harrison High School Irshad Abdulmajeed Benjamin Fernquist Evan Kravitz Declan Rosenstock Bridget Smith Noah Weingarden High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test ( PSAT/NMSQT®)—a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year—and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements. NMSC is a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship program. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and approximately 440 business organizations and high education institutions that share the goal of encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.
