A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE COLONY OF PORT-JACKSON, in New South Wales; Its Native Inhabitants, Productions, &c. &c. By George Bond. First published by the Author at Southampton in 1803 and reprinted for Him at Oxford, Lond, Cork and Dublin in various Years to about 1810. Eighth Edition, faithfully reprinted from the first, incorporating the additions and corrections of the later editions. Edited, with bibliographical notes by Julien Renard. Melbourne: Published by Edition Renard, 2005. 8vo, Limited Edition; pp. [vi], 42(last colophon); sewn in original stiff wrappers, with french fold. Melbourne; Edition Renard; 2005. ***Limited Edition of 100 copies within a total edition of 200 numbered copies, and now first published since about 1810. All the original editions are of great rarity. No copies of the 2nd or 3rd editions have been recorded and the first (Southampton, 1803) edition is extremely rare, while the 4th (Oxford, 1806), 5th (London, 1809), 5th (i.e. 6th, Cork, undated), and 6th (i.e. 7th, Dublin, also undated), editions are all very rare. The work is of considerable importance as one of the few accounts of Hunter’s period as Governor. Hunter was dissatisfied with Bond’s behaviour in the colony and complained of him in dispatches. Hunter was instructed to return him to England and Bond left the colony under a cloud in 1800, but his narrative was evidently very popular. He gives an account of the operation of the convict system and the economic corruption in the colony, and describes early efforts to encourage free settlers. He includes also comments on the Aborigines and on the natural history of the colony, including much from first-hand experience. See Ferguson 480; Wantrup, pp. A$75.00 91-3. #15238 2012. 6 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number 53 5 Bond, George. A VOYAGE TO NEW SOUTH WALES. The Journal of Lieutenant William Bradley RN of HMS Sirius, 1786-1792. Reproduced in facsimile from the original manuscript. With a portfolio of Charts. 2 vols., cr. 4to, First Edition; Vol. I, pp. xviii, 1-232, 232a-232b, 233-244, 244a-244b, 245-498(last 3 blank); 29 col. plates, extensive index to the text and Bradley’s Charts, views and tables; Vol. II, pp. 8; portfolio of 22 col. & folding charts; original brown cloth, spines lettered in gilt; a nice set in d/ws. Sydney; The Trustees of the Public Library of New South Wales in association with Ure Smith Pty Ltd; 1969. ***An important journal of the flagship of the First Fleet bringing convicts to the founding settlement of Australia, this facsimile of the original manuscript and watercolours is a very valuable contribution to the early history of the settlement. The journal is penned in a clear and legible hand. Bradley was on the Sirius on her voyage to the Cape of Good Hope for supplies, which went eastwards and around Cape Horn, meeting in these high latitudes the “ice islands” amongst which they sailed for twenty-eight days. His illustrations include two fine watercolours of these “ice islands”. He also recounts the wreck of the “Sirius” at Norfolk Island and the subsequent story of the crew during their eventual return to England on a chartered Dutch vessel. #26219 A$185.00 2012. 8 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number 53 7 Clark, C. The first and most popular of the First Fleet accounts, Tench’s work was published in three London editions and in Dublin, and translated and published into several languages, all in 1789. This first French edition is of particular interest as the “Recit Historique” (of 86 pages) and the translator’s notes are useful additions to Tench’s account. #23905 A$1450.00 2012. 34 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number 53 33 Tench, Captain Watkin. I Sammandrag af Samuel Odmann. Upsala, tryckt hos dir. J. Edmans enka, 1793. Cr. 8vo, First Edition; pp. xii, 148; 4 plates, a few text decorations; uncut in contemporary wrappers (stuck a little far into first & last leaves obscuring portions of three letters; fore-edge of title-page slightly trimmed and neatly reinforced); a nice copy; very scarce. Upsala; J. Edmans; 1793. ***Ferguson 172; Du Rietz 915. This rare Swedish account was compiled by Samuel Odmann from Johann Reinhold Forster’s German version of the First Fleet story derived from the published English accounts of White and Phillip (the official account). The final part of the volume (page 115 to the end) is an account of Captain Cook’s voyage up the east coast of New Holland, probably derived from Hawkesworth. Odmann was quite a prolific compiler of material related to Australia and the Pacific producing several works in the late eighteenth century. The plates were probably the first images of Australia published in Sweden (see Rolf Du Rietz’s Swansea, Series A, Part I, pp. 21-23, for detailed discussion). A Paris, Chez Pougin, Imprimeur-Libraire, rue des Peres, No. 9. An 3 de la Republique, (1795, vieux style.) Post or demy 8vo, First French Edition; pp. xii, 206, [2](Table des Matieres), 256(Notes du Traducteur), [4](Table Alphabetique des Notes); contemporary pastepapered boards, rebacked & recornered with calf or kangaroo; (a little foxing at beginning & end; small stain on lower corner of first few leaves); a fine generally clean & crisp copy; rare. Paris; Pougin; 1795. ***Ferguson 231. Without the two plates called for by FERGUSON. We are disposed, however, to challenge his collation. During the past sixty years we have examined many copies of this edition, and not one has contained any plates. The British Museum copy, also, is without them. On the other hand, the “edition” of 1798 (F. 283), which is actually a reissue of the sheets of the 1795 edition but with a new half-title and title-page, has two plates, which are specified in the title. However, FERGUSON in his description of this issue does not mention the two plates in his collation. We conclude, therefore, that he has confused the two issues, and that his collations require revision. The importance of this translation of WHITE’s Journal has consistently been overlooked. The latter part of the Volume (i.e., the 256 pages comprising the “Notes du Traducteur”), which exceeds in volume the work of WHITE itself, consists of detailed analysis, comment, criticism and elaboration of WHITE’s Journal, relating WHITE’s statements to those in the works of PHILLIP and TENCH, and comparing the country generally, the native people and their ways, the flora and fauna, with those of other lands, as recorded by earlier voyagers and observers, both English and French. POUGENS’ Notes with this translation, A$1950.00 therefore, entitle it to be considered a separate work in its own right. #21522 42 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number 53 41 White, John.
