Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9.9 CANTICLE: Song of Zechariah U Blessed be the Lord who sets his people free. Blesséd are you, Lord, the God of Israel: you have come to your people and set them free. You have raised up for us a mighty Saviour: born of the house of your servant David. Prayer of the Day: Eternal God, you exalted Jesus Christ to rule over all things, and have made us instruments of his kingdom: by your Spirit empower us to love the unloved, and to minister to all in need, then at the last bring us to your eternal realm where we may be welcomed into your everlasting joy and may worship and adore you for ever; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. U Through your holy prophets, you promised of old: to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us, To show mercy to our forebears: and to remember your holy covenant. U This was the oath you swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship you without fear: holy and righteous before you, all the days of Prayer of the Week: Stir up, we pray you, O Lord, the wills of your faithful people, that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may by you be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. And then there was light from the burning of natural materials: wood, oil, gas. The advent of electric light, in the latter part of the nineteenth century was greeted with considerable alarm for it altered the circadian rhythms of the world. It symbolized, like no other invention before or since, the opposition between a natural world – of clear demarcation between night and day – and a modern world – in which business and leisure could and soon would operate 24/7. The darkness which could only be held at bay by fire, was overthrown by the click of a switch. I wonder how that changed Christian spirituality. Is ‘Shine Jesus Shine’ a direct result of the ease with which we now turn on the lights? Is there a difference between lighting a real candle in prayer, versus turning on a battery operated one? More importantly, what happened to our concept of spiritual darkness once physical darkness was so easily overcome? Advent is the annual invitation to consider light and dark. I was brought up in America where Advent thrust us out into the darkness as we walked around our neighbour-hood admiring each house’s Christmas lights. The more garish and twinkly, the more I sensed God playing, extravagantly, in the darkness. Today my experience of Advent usually involves carolling in the rain, thanking God for the dim light thrown by underpowered torches onto sodden song sheets. These are moments when technology touches my spirit. A more profound reflection on the interplay between electric light and darkness can be found in poetry, particularly of the Modernist era, when such light was a new phenomenon. T. S. Eliot’s ‘Rhapsody on a Windy Night’ (which would later inspire ‘Memory’ from Cats) conveys some of the angst surrounding this new technology. Hart Crane’s ‘To Brooklyn Bridge’ links the new light to the old as he looks at cars streaming over the bridge: Again the traffic lights that skim thy swift Unfractioned idiom, immaculate sigh of stars, Beading thy path - - condense eternity: And we have seen night lifted in thine arms. This Advent, one challenge might be to follow the poets as they trace both the star against the sky, and the headlights on a river: to look at light in all its forms as it plays out against the darkness of the world. And to look at Scripture as it, too, considers the different forms light might take: ‘Thy word is a light unto my feet, and a lamp unto my path’ (Psalm 119.105). ‘The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it’ (John 1.5).
