His early adventures benefited the city and region of Athens, helping in the consolidation of the Athenian power through shrewd political maneuvering. He also led the Athenian army on a number of victorious campaigns. He was also credited as the founder of democracy, voluntarily transferring many of his powers as king over to an elected assembly. He gained a reputation for helping the poor and oppressed. His shedding of power also made it easier for him to continue going on adventures after his rule. "Not without Theseus" became a popular Athenian saying, reflecting the belief he should be included in any important undertaking. While growing up, he looked up to his older cousin Heracles. Theseus and Heracles later saved each other's lives; Heracles through his strength; Theseus through his wisdom. In middle age, his wisdom deserted him. He began going on foolish adventures, and making bad decisions. His efforts to produce an heir for the throne led to more problems. The people of Athens grew tired of the turmoil he produced. Eventually, he died in exile. The city did not bother to bring his body home. 21 Month 2015-16 MYP Generations passed without much thought being given to Theseus. Then, during the Persian wars, Athenian soldiers reported seeing the ghost of Theseus and came to believe that he was responsible for their victories. The Athenian general Cimon received a command from the Oracle at Delphi to find Theseus' bones and returns them to Athens. He did so, and he was reburied in a magnificent tomb that also served as a sanctuary for the defenseless. Task : Speech Writing (Refer: our lesson on: Theseus and the Minotaur) Visualize that you are the new King Theseus. Your people are waiting to hear your first speech as their new king. Use the following hints: Went to war-victorious- journey back to Athens- forgotten -father’s instructions- black sails-replace - white sails – father wanted desperately-no news-thought son to be dead-fell into sea-dead-you feel guilty-want to apologize to father who is dead-will I be a good king? 22 Month Reflection 2015-16 MYP Mythology, especially Greek mythology has always interested me. So, the task where I had to imagine myself to be Theseus, a brave mythological character, really got me excited. I had to imagine myself being crowned the king, delivering my first speech. I knew my speech should reflect my bravery and, also that it should be inspiring. I enjoyed working on the speech though it turned out to be a little challenging. It had to reflect the remorse for the death of my father, whom I succeeded and at the same time instill the confidence of people about my abilities. I maintained a formal tone, persuasive, though I brought in emotions of sorrow and regret when I spoke of my father’s death. In the words of Aristotle, in his essay on Rhetoric, rhetoric is "... the faculty of observing in any given case is the available means of persuasion." According to Aristotle, this art of persuasion could be used in public settings in different ways. I tried to incorporate some rhetorical devices that we learned on speech writing English lessons. - PRISHA SETH Grade 8 23 during our Month 2015-16 Canteen Menu PARTICULARS TUESDAY 23.02.15 WEDNESDAY 24.02.15 THURSDAY 25.02.15 FRIDAY 26.02.15 MONDAY 29.02.15 PRE-PRIMARY SAMBHAR RICE WITH PAPAD MIX VEG ADAI WITH TOMATO CHUTNEY VEG WRAP BEETROOT POORI WITH JAM BANANA PANCAKE WITH CHOCOLATE SAUCE WHEAT FLAKES WITH MILK / UTTAPA SHORT BREAK CORN FLAKES WITH MILK / MIX DAL BHAJIYA WITH KETCHUP MUSELI WITH MILK/ METHI THEPLA WITH CHUNDA OATS WITH MILK / RICE NOODLES UPMA CEREALS WITH MILK / SPROUT AND CORN BHEL CHAPATI CAPSICUM RICE TREVTI DAL PARWAL BHAJI CABBAGE PEAS AND CARROT STIR FRY BUTTERMILK SALAD FULKA CORRIANDER RICE SINDHI KADHI RAJMA MASALA TENDLI BHAJI VEG RAITA FRUIT SALAD RAGI KI ROTI MAA KI DAL ZEERA RICE DUM ALOO PALAK KI BHAJI SALAD BUTTERMILK PAV \ CHAPATI BHAJI KACHUMBER SALAD LEMONADE GULAB JAMUN SPRING ROLLS VEG MACRONI VEG AND RAJMA PATTY BURGER VEG BIRYANI WITH CUCUMBER RAITA LUNCH SPECIAL MEAL CHAPATI CARROT RICE TOMATO DAL TADKA BHINDI DO PYAZA CAULIFLOWER POTATO BHAJI ROASTED PAPAD VEG RAITA SCHEZWAN NOODLES WITH MANCHURIAN Note: All salads served will be boiled - Ms Payal Sinha Consultant Dietician 24
