BBC Music Day is the BBC's annual UK-wide celebration of music. The next event will take place on 15th June
2017 with special events and broadcasts taking place across the UK (including Cornwall!).
We will again be holding a day of musical celebrations in St Austell Town Centre with a performance stage set up
in White River Place. Throughout the day there will be free workshops as well as performances by local young
players, from classical to disco! We will be ending the day with a free family concert by local band, Hot Space!
Be part of the Big Clay Country Choir and perform in St Austell as part of BBC Music Day!
If you are a primary or secondary school in St Austell or the clay area, how about being part of a massed
choir of singers who will be singing an original song about Cornwall, written and composed by children from
Bugle and Treloweth Primary schools? The preparation singing sessions in your school will be free and led
by Emma Mansfield. The final performance will take place at 2.30pm in White River Place on 15th June.
Ten Pieces Assemblies
This year the BBC are asking schools to get involved with the Music Day celebrations by holding their own Ten
Pieces assemblies with performances of some of the Ten Pieces or their creative responses. Any schools wanting
to be involved should register school details with the BBC. .
The BBC’s Ten Pieces project aims to open up the world of classical music to 7-14 year-olds across the UK and
inspire them to develop their own creative responses to the music. The BBC have created two highly engaging
films which each introduce young viewers to 10 key pieces of classical music. The website, www.bbc.co.uk/
TenPieces, has a wealth of resources to support schools with engaging their students:

Explore the 'Ten Pieces' films by ordering a free DVD or viewing each performance separately

Free downloadable teaching resources including lesson plans, composer information, cross-curricular
resources and simplified orchestral arrangements
In addition, the Ten Pieces programme offers the opportunities to engage with professional musicians through
their Coaching Scheme, see performances of the pieces plus a platform to share schools’ own creative
responses.
The Hub will be holding a Ten Pieces concert for schools at the Hall for Cornwall on 23rd March 2018 so look
out for details coming soon!

Rambert Ghost Dancers Project
The Hub is working with local schools, DR2, the
Eden Project, Hall for Cornwall, the Cornwall
Music Service Trust and the Rambert Dance
Company on an exciting music and dance
project which will culminate in a day of
performances at Eden on 20th July. We have
commissioned music teachers to work with 12
schools from across Cornwall to create music
inspired by Christopher Bruce’s Ghost Dances
to which the students will then create dances.
The children will then be performing their
newly created pieces to audiences across the
Eden Project site. Schools and colleges involved in this project are: Gerrans (costume
only), Gorran, Liskeard Hillfort, Lostwithiel,
Otterham, Pencalenick, Pondhu, Robartes, The
Roseland (dance only), St Breock, St Wenn, Tregony, Trewirgie, and Truro College.
First Access - free introduction to learning an instrument
for the whole class
The CMEH is able to offer grants to schools to fund a music specialist to deliver whole class instrumental lessons.
The grants are available to fund a 12 week programme called First Access which aims to introduce students in
Key Stages 1-3 to learning an instrument.
The programme consists of:
 An initial planning meeting with the classroom teacher and music leader
 10 weekly 45 minute whole class lessons (students should learn the same instrument each week)
 A review meeting with the classroom teacher and music leader
The grants are available for any classes who have not previously benefitted from the scheme (schools can access
for more than one class). Schools will need to identify a suitable deliverer for the sessions and also provide their
own instruments. The Hub can assist in this as we have a list of teachers/organisations who are able to deliver
First Access and also sets of instruments which can be hired at the subsidised rate of £70 per set per term.
Further information about the programme and how to access the funding can be
found on http://cornwallmusiceducationhub.org/first-access

Vocal Strategy Update
Starting at the Hall For Cornwall on 28th February, Songfest returned with a bang and continued on into March.
Approximately 700 children from across the county came together to create a massed choir for the Hub’s series of
seven Songfest concerts held in 5 different venues: Hall for Cornwall, Princess Pavilions, Launceston Town Hall,
Mounts Bay Academy in Penzance and St James Church in Torpoint. All the events were led by the talented
Angela Renshaw and Patrick Bailey.
At each event, the theme was ‘Rockin All Over the World,’ and the massed choir of children from schools in each
local area performed songs from across the world, ranging from Japan to Ireland, Poland to Australia with each
evening ending with a rousing rendition of Status Quo’s all time classic ‘Rocking All Over the World’. For six of
the seven concerts, the Songfest choirs were accompanied by a four piece band made up of teachers from CMST
and other Hub registered providers. The seventh concert that was held in St James Church, Torpoint was
’Songfest Unplugged.’ The first act at each of these concerts featured performances by talented students from
local secondary schools, colleges, as well as the Hub’s own County Choirs.
Become a Cornish
Singing School and
celebrate the power
of singing!
The Hub recently launched a new scheme which
recognises schools where singing is already a key
part of school life and supports those who want
to develop their own vocal strategy - Cornish
Singing Schools. The scheme was developed in
collaboration with national vocal specialist, Baz
Chapman, to create a framework which schools
can use to develop their vocal activity. We were
excited to present our first 34 Cornish Singing
School Awards in March but we are keen to work
with more schools! We can help to ensure your
school is singing regularly and singing well. There
is no cost for schools to get involved with the
scheme and you will get access to advice, support
and opportunities from the Hub plus one year’s
free Sing Up membership. Any schools interested
in getting involved should contact Angela
Renshaw: [email protected]
Free vocal support for schools
As part of the Hub’s ongoing Vocal Strategy we are
offering schools the opportunity for free support through
the School Engagement Vocal Outreach Workshops.
These free one-hour vocal workshops for Key Stage 2
pupils aim to help schools with their own vocal development. The workshops will be delivered in school by one of
the members of the Cornwall County Choir staff or Hub
Vocal Leaders. We aim to visit every primary school in
Cornwall throughout the next year. The workshops are
specifically for teachers or vocal leaders who are keen to
continue to improve the quality of singing in their own
school, have a choir they wish to develop or are looking to
set up a choir.
The School Engagement Workshops will be organised to
suit each school through discussion with the member of
staff who will deliver it. There will then be an opportunity
to discuss with them any particular areas which you would
like us to support in terms of vocal development.
Our team of Vocal Leaders will be contacting schools from
early May but please contact the Hub office if you would
like to arrange a visit - [email protected]

AWENEK LEV - Call out for singers of all ages
Awenek Lev, Cornish for Creative Voice, is a brand new performance choir that will support some very exciting
projects this summer. Emma Mansfield, one of the Hub’s vocal leaders and musical director of Lost in Song and
the Daylight choir, is collaborating with David Greeves and his vertical aerial dance company Yskynna, to create
two vocal and visual spectacles at Falmouth Maritime Museum, St Mawes Harbour and Trebah Gardens.
These outdoor performances offer some fabulous musical and vocal
opportunities for passionate singers of any age, up and coming
singing leaders and any young musicians who would like to be part of
bigger projects and productions. Rehearsals will be free and we will
be singing a range of original and existing music, accompanied and
acappella, and creating vocal soundscapes, especially arranged for
Awenek Lev.
Later in the year, this choir will have the opportunity to perform in
Bodmin, Lostwithiel, Port Isaac and possibly Plymouth. Young singers
very, very welcome.
To find out more or sign up please contact Emma Mansfield on

Cornish Young Singers
open the Proms!
We are thrilled to be working with the BBC
Proms and BBC Singers once again. This time
20 young people from Cornwall, including
members of the Cornwall County Youth Choir,
will be performing at the Royal Albert Hall as
part of the BBC Proms Youth Choir on 14th
July, the opening night of the 2017 Proms
Series.
These singers will spend several days working
with the BBC Singers at the BBC Proms Youth
Choir Academy leading up to the concert in
what promises to be a once in a lifetime experience for these young people!

Opportunity for young conductors
We are working with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
to offer a new project: Leading Music – an introduction to
conducting. Leading Music is a course for up to 8 young
people, aged between 15-18, who are interested in learning
about conducting and about musical leadership within the
context of notated music ensembles such as orchestras, wind
bands, brass bands and choirs.
The course will run for 6 x 3 hour sessions from September to
March. The sessions will be held in a central location to allow
young people from across the county to attend. Ideally,
attendees would be grade 6 or above on their instrument.
Students should apply with a recommendation from a class
or instrumental teacher or leader of a current music group
such as a youth orchestra or wind band. The sessions will be
led by BSO Associate, Patrick Bailey.
Any students interested in registering for this course should
contact the Hub office - [email protected]

BSO Cornwall Residency 2017
At the end of March, musicians of the BSO
once again spent a week working with schools
and young musicians across Cornwall. This
project, part funded by the Cornwall Music
Education Hub, enabled the BSO to visit 52
schools, from Launceston to the Isles of Scilly,
where they worked with 3,689 students and teachers. During the week, Guest composer Makoto Nomura
visited eight schools throughout the week, composing works with the children and teaching them about musical
culture in Japan. Also, through events such as Bbs Early Years CPD, Family Orchestra session at Penryn College,
BSO Associate workshops, and Open Schools Orchestra sessions, the BSO introduced new ways of music
making that can be used by teachers and educators across Cornwall to continue making music with children,
young people, and the community.
“Thank you so much for coming, you've inspired me. I hope one day I'm like you” - postcard received from a
student at Duloe Primary School

Hub Sounds 2017!
On 24th April 340 young people performed in the
Hub’s annual showcase, Hub Sounds. These young
people represented 16 different schools, 6 ensembles and 2 colleges. The performances ranged from
classical piano solos to disco bands.
For the first time, we were able to welcome on
stage performances by two new ensembles from
Pencalenick School and Richard Lander ARK. These
ensembles used specially adapted technology which
enable young people with disabilities to be able to
participate in ensemble music making. The students
have been worked with music leaders from the
Cornwall Music Service Trust since September on a
Open School Orchestra project jointly funded by the
Hub and Youth Music
During the Spring Term, five schools in Cornwall worked
with the Mahogany Opera team and local music leader,
Shelley Jeffery, on a project to put together a performance
of five new mini operas. These ‘Snappy’ operas were all
created especially for primary children and were written with
input from schools across the county (including Tregadillet
from Cornwall!).
Each school has been supported over a number of workshops by specialist music leaders in order to put together a
showstopping premiere night. 150 children from St Issey, St
Petrocs, St Stephens (Launceston), Tregadillet and
Warbstow Schools took part in the project and performed to
a sold-out Launceston Town Hall on 29th March.
Young Leader Projects
Since last September young people have been involved in two different projects to develop their skills as Music
Leaders. 10 young people from across Cornwall participated in the Young Music Leader project led by Cymaz
Music, first meeting at the Hub Young Leaders residential in December and then again in April. They have all
been finding ways to practise what they learnt about leading in a range of placements across the county, such
one who is leading a steel band in their own school.
The Young Vocal Leader Programme cohort of 9 young people have been working with vocal specialist Ula Weber and many are now leading vocal groups in their schools or local areas. We will be developing training and
resources which will enable more young people to be supported in leadership roles.

School Engagement Projects
Christine would like to congratulate the Mullion Cluster who took part in a vocal transition project culminating in a
brilliant performance to a packed audience at Mullion secondary school last term. The young people rose to the
challenge of learning and performing songs in three and four part harmony, performing as a massed choir involving primary and secondary students as well as each preparing their own individual pieces. We all had a great final
day at Mullion secondary who kindly hosted the final celebration. Thank you to all the schools who took part!
The Cornwall Music Service Trust is delivering lots of projects throughout the whole county on behalf of the Hub
this term and they are delighted to welcome Georgina Bridle to our team of engagement leaders. Georgina will be
leading projects in North Cornwall. If you would like to know more or would like to be involved in a future project
do contact Christine Judge, Georgina Bridle or Philip Montgomery Smith at Cornwall Music Service Trust.
CMST Primary Conference at the Sands Resort
The Cornwall Music Service Trust conference for primary music coordinators took place at the end of last term. What an action packed day
it was and thanks to all who attended and contributed to the day!
Teachers went away buzzing with their own handmade instruments and
armed with lots of new ideas and resources to use back at school. The
CMST will be running the conference again next March with a discount
for booking early. Contact Christine Judge for details—

St Piran’s Cross Multi-Academy Trust
Project
Over the last term, the schools of St Piran’s Cross
Multi Academy Trust; Bishop Bronescombe, Grampound Road, Grampound with Creed, Ladock and
Veryan, have been working towards a very special
performance at the Hall for Cornwall which was
organised and funded by the Hub. Students from
across the schools created a musical story with
dances, songs and music from around the world.
Students from each school have been learning to
play different instruments through the Hub’s First
Access scheme as well as learning songs with the
support of Phil Montgomery-Smith. Patrick Bailey
also supported the students to write their own
song which was performed as part of the grand
finale to the show sung by 250 children!

Inclusion Projects Update
Music Mentoring
Cymaz Music is receiving referrals from across Cornwall for our Music Mentoring scheme. We are currently working with children and young people in Care and those with SEND as well as those at risk of exclusion from mainstream school.
The Music Mentor works with the teacher, child and sometimes parents or carers, to develop a plan and objectives for the 10 week programme. We are using music as the tool to make a connection with the child and from
there we are working to develop personal and social skills and promote wider learning. Our approach is based on
working from a young person centred place and we are embracing the Thrive approach to inform our delivery.

YEP! Now recruiting young musicians aged 10 -14
Following the success of the YEP! Ensemble project, Cymaz Music has opened up
this amazing opportunity to younger aspiring musicians between the ages of 10
and 14. YEP! is a project that supports, nurtures and guides young musicians
through the process of composition and performance. The project is run by professional musicians and has weekly sessions. Members are supported by
professional musicians and a YEP! Senior member.
So far YEP! Jnr has composed 2 pieces of original music and performed in 2 venues
including a spectacular performance at the Hall for Cornwall.
Are you a young musician? Do you think you’d like to become part of this amazing
project? We are especially looking for brass, woodwind and strings players, but
any young musician between the ages of 10 and 14 is eligible to apply.
Please contact Giles Woolley - [email protected] for more details.
Connecting Communities
through Music
Do you work in one of the following areas; Bodmin,
the Clays, Camborne, Liskeard or Penzance?
We are looking for news items about projects that
have taken place or about to happen. If you have just
had a really brilliant First Access or some of your
pupils have performed recently, let us know about it!
If you want to let people know about any event or
service you are offering in these areas, please get in
touch.
Our aim is to support the sharing of information more
easily, so people know what is going on in an area.
If you have got any good news stories about
music in your school or setting that you would
like to share with the community around you,
please email [email protected].

The Power of inclusive Music
Making
Children from Trevithick Academy ARB have been
working with Simon from Cymaz music as part of an
amazing project that aims to introduce young people to
alternative ways of making music. For many potential
young musicians ‘Traditional’ instruments often present
barriers both physical and motivational.
The project aims to teach young people and the staff
that work with them to make music using music
technology, giving them the access they need to become
musicians and composers. Children from Trevithick have
been exploring using iPads to create their own musical
compositions and it seems the staff have enjoyed the
experience just as much as the young people!
The teacher at Trevithick school noted “Staff gained a
great deal learning how to use new technologies,
support pupils, work alongside outside professionals,
and have a focus to look forward to each week.”
Music for children in the Cornwall
Hospital Education Service
Children and young people from Cornwall Hospital
Education Service have been given the opportunity
explore different ways of making music thanks to a
Hub project being delivered by Cymaz Music.
Music Leader, Giles Woolley, has been providing
one to one and small group sessions in Treliske hospital with a focus on enjoyment, during what can
often be a very stressful and difficult time for the
young people. The range of ages and musical
abilities has meant that Giles has had to provide a
variety of different musical experiences. Sessions have included iPad workshops,
guitar and ukulele taster sessions, improvisation sessions for experienced young
musicians and exploring sound workshops for young people with SEND.
“Thanks very much for working with some of our students at the Hospital School
yesterday, your time with them was very valuable and they certainly enjoyed the
sessions. It was wonderful that you managed to engage children ranging from 6
to 14 with a variety of musical resources and gauged the session very quickly and
aptly to their interests and needs. It was clear to see that they enjoyed it”
