Learning and Teaching Support Training
Using Qwizdom
Qwizdom is an Audience Response System that allows the polling of users’ opinions or answers to
questions. The software integrates with Microsoft PowerPoint, allowing the creation of PowerPoint
presentations with questions embedded in them, to which users may respond in one of the following
ways:



Via dedicated hand-held devices (known as ‘handsets’ or ‘clickers’ - these terms are used
interchangeably in this document)
Via an app (called QVR)
Via browser on a mobile device (at the http://qvr.qwizdom.com/ web site)
Responses may be shown on screen in real time and exported for later use. This guide covers the
installation of the relevant software to use Qwizdom, the creation and delivery of a Qwizdom
presentation, the use of the handsets and the exporting of data collected in the results.
Installing Qwizdom Actionpoint
Before Qwizdom can be used, an extension to Microsoft PowerPoint needs to be installed. This
extension is called Qwizdom Actionpoint. To install this from Run Advertised Programs (RAP) follow
these steps:
1. Click Windows Start button.
2. Click Control Panel.
3. Click Run Advertised Programs (Figure 1).
Figure 1 – Run Advertised Programs (RAP) in the Control Panel
4. The Run Advertised Programs (RAP) window opens. Select the Qwizdom Actionpoint Install
option and then click Run. The software is downloaded and installed.

5. Close Run Advertised Programs (RAP) when completed.
6. Open PowerPoint.
7. A new Qwizdom Actionpoint tab will have appeared on the ribbon in PowerPoint, showing all
the Qwizdom Actionpoint options (Figure 2). These are the options that must be used to
create the slides that are intended to interact with the Qwizdom software and handsets.
Other slides in the PowerPoint presentation may be created in the normal way.
Figure 2 - The Qwizdom Actionpoint ribbon in PowerPoint
Creating a Qwizdom Question
Some or all slides within a Qwizdom presentation may be created using the Qwizdom Actionpoint
features ribbon. For slides not needing interaction there is no need to use this part of the ribbon to
create or edit the slide content, but any slides that are intended to contains questions for user
responses via Qwizdom MUST be created and edited using the features on this part of the ribbon.
To create a slide showing a question follow these steps. The example used here will be to create a
slide with a 4 answer options to a Multiple Choice question.
1. From the Insert Slide menu click the pull down arrow at the bottom right hand corner of the
Insert Slide button and then select Multiple Choice and 4 Choice (Figure 3).
Figure 3 - Inserting a 4 Choice Multiple Choice Slide
Page 2 of 20

2. A new slide is inserted. The default heading is, ‘Please make your selection’. Overtype this
with your question text.
3. One answer option appears by default ‘A) Enter 4 Answer Choices’. Overtype this with your
first answer option, press Return on the keyboard and then type answer options B), C) and
D), pressing Return between each one. Figure 4 shows an example of what a completed
question would look like.
Figure 4 - An example 4 Choice Multiple Choice question created in Qwizdom Actionpoint
4. In instances where the question has a correct answer (i.e. it’s not a survey of opinion) select
the correct answer option from the Answer pull down menu in the ribbon. Figure 5 shows
an example.
Figure 5 - Selecting the correct answer option
5. The default number of Points available for a question is 1 and the default Timer setting for a
response is 15 (seconds). Although individual users’ points tallies may be calculated at the
end based on the number of the handset they are holding, Qwizdom is not intended as an
summative assessment tool and should not be used as such.
6. Repeat Steps 1-5 to add further slides. Save the PowerPoint presentation in the normal way
as you go.

Question Types Available in Qwizdom
Qwizdom supports the question types outlined in this section of the guide. Each may be inserted onto
a new slide by following the steps in the Creating a Qwizdom Question section of this guide (above),
merely substituting the desired question type in Step 1 and following the on-screen dialogues to
complete the question set up.

this guide, with options available to choose between having 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 answer options
available.
Multiple Mark - A multiple response question, in which more than one answer option may
be selected. One or more answers may be marked as correct answers. See the Advanced
Question Features section for more details.
Numeric - A question requiring a number as a response. Users use the number pad on their
handset to enter their response.
Sequence - A question requiring items to be put in a sequence.
Rating Scale - A question using a rating scale, asking users to place their answer on a scale. A
range of scales may be selected.
Vote (Multiple Mark) - Essentially the same as the Multiple Mark option above, packaged up
as a ‘vote’.
Text Input - Asks users to input text as an answer.
Demographic - This is a quick template for demography questions.
Text Response – Essentially the same as Text Input.
Text Edit - Ditto.
Equation - Allows the creation of equation questions, users input their answer a numeric
response.
Advanced Question Features
Some questions require the use of the Advanced option from the Answer pull down menu to be
selected and then additional options to be input in order to set the questions up correctly. An example
of this is the Multiple Mark question type. Figure 6 shows an example of the Advanced Question
Properties box that appears when Advanced is selected from the Answers pull down menu for a
Multiple Mark question. Note how the correct answer options have been selected and the option to
send both the question text and the answer choices to the remote handsets have been selected.

has been completed. The Qwizdom Presentation Setup dialogue box has the following four tabs:
Presentation Settings
Figure 10 - The Qwizdom Presentation Setup dialogue box showing the Presentation Settings tab

Participant List - By default this is set to Anonymous and should be left that way unless you
have a specific need to know who answered what. In that case other options available are to
browse for a participant list (which requires a pre-formatted list in a specific file type to
have been created beforehand), have a self-forming list (this requires all users to have an
account with Qwizdom which likely will not be the case) or Blackboard (which requires an
integration with Blackboard which our Blackboard installation does not support).

Save Results - Allows you to choose the place where results are saved. See the Exporting
Results section of this guide for more details.

Present As - Allows a range of options, including a series of game-type deliveries not
covered in this guide. Select Normal Presentation here.

Allow Participants to change answer - A self-explanatory check box to allow (or not) users
to change their mind when voting.

Send Right/Wrong feedback to remotes after answering - If this is activated, in instances
where questions have a correct answer feedback is sent to the clicker after answering to say
whether the selected option was correct or not.


Show Right/Wrong feedback Instead of Responses in Self-Paced Progress - When checked
and a self-paced presentation is being run, feedback (instead of responses) will be shown to
users. Feedback needs to be set up at the time of question creation.

Timer - If desired, a timer may be set up to allow a certain amount of time on a question.

This tab relates to how devices are allowed to connect to the Qwizdom presentation. Select
the Enable local network communication and Enable internet-based communication check
boxes to allow users to join the session using remote devices such as tablets and mobiles. The
Web Session-Key will be displayed in the Startup Progress Bar and in the Qwizdom Toolbar
during the presentation.
Using the Handsets to Respond to Questions
The clicker handsets are turned on by a long press on the On/Off button (circled in green in Figure 14).
They search for the Qwizdom USB stick via radio frequency and, if they find it, the screen shows the
word Ready. When a slide created using the Qwizdom Actionpoint software that contains a question
is navigated to by the presenter, the answer options are shown on the handsets. Users use the up and
down arrows to scroll to highlight the answer option they wish to select, or the keypad if text or
numbered answers are required, and then they click the button on the right below the word Send
(circled in blue in Figure 14). This sends their answer to the Qwizdom software via the USB stick.
Figure 14 - The Qwizdom clicker in action
If the option to change a response after it has been submitted has been allowed then users may
continue to scroll up and down the answer options or input another text answer and click Send until
the time the presenter moves from that slide.

Using a web browser to respond to questions
Questions may also be answered via a web browser, be this on a desktop machine or a mobile device
using the device’s browser. All the is required is, again, the Session Key. To answer questions in this
way, follow these steps:
1. Open a web browser and visit http://qvr.qwizdom.com.
2. Type the Session Key into the Session Key field. The Session Key is displayed on the Qwizdom
Toolbar after the characters QVR (Figure 16).
3. Click the Launch button.
4. As with the app, the browser page follows the slides of the presentation as it is delivered.
When a slide with a question is reached, the answer options are shown on the slide, and
corresponding buttons are shown under the slide (Figure 20).

Viewing the Graph of Responses During the Presentation
To provide best visual use of Qwizdom in a lecture, you may wish to bring the chart window up on
screen before you start asking people to respond to the questions. This will mean that as users respond
to the questions, the bar chart (histogram) will be populated with those responses. The chart window
does not show up by default, the relevant chart icon in the Qwizdom Toolbar needs to be clicked, and
then, to ensure the chart stays on top, the window showing the chart may need to be dragged onto
the main display, particularly in situations where PowerPoint Presenter view is in play (such as in some
teaching spaces and lecture theatres). This of course may obscure some of the answer options, and
so the chart window may need to be resized appropriately.
1. Navigate to the slide showing the relevant question.
2. On the Qwizdom Toolbar click the chart icon (as shown in Figure 23).
Figure 23 - The Qwizdom Toolbar with the Chart icon circled
3. Drag the chart onto the display window (if required).
4. Resize the chart (if required) by clicking and dragging on one or more of the corner handles.
Figure 24 shows an example of how this might look when completed.

Using Qwizdom
Figure 24 - Example showing a slide with the chart window dragged on top and resized so as not to obscure the question
text on the slide underneath
5. The bar graph will now populate on screen with the results as users enter them (as shown in
Figure 24).
6. When moving to the next question, the graph window unfortunately returns to its original
opening position, so will need to be dragged into position again for each question slide.
Exporting Results
Results may be exported from Qwizdom. The process involves ensuring, before the presentation is
started, that the results are saved in a file. This file is of the file type .qrx. Reports may then be run off
by Qwizdom against the data in this file.
1. Click the Start Presentation button (Figure 8).
2. In the Presentation Setup dialogue box, on the Presentation Settings tab, click the pull down
menu next to Save Results and select Save As (Figure 25).

3. A Save As dialogue box opens. Navigate to the place when the .qvr output file is to be saved.
4. In the File name field give the file a name. Figure 26 shows the Save As dialogue box ready to
save.

5. Click Save. Upon completion of the presentation the .qvr file will be saved to this location.
6. After the presentation is run, open the folder containing the .qvr file and double click to
open it (the file should open in Qwizdom, although it is possible that you may need to
associate this file type with the Qwizdom software application first).
7. The Qwizdom Report Generator dialogue box is displayed. This allows for the generation of
multiple types of report. The Question Summary Report may be the most useful, as this
reproduces the slides and the bar charts associated with each. Figure 27 shows an example
of this being selected.

8. Click Generate to create the report. In the case of the Question Summary Report type, this
opens in a viewer window (Figure 28).

9. Click the Save icon at the top of this viewer window to save the file as a PDF or an Excel file
(the latter is merely a graphical representation of the results as an image file embedded into
the Excel document, not data one can base calculations on).
10. To export results as data, use the Export to CSV option in the Report Generator dialogue box
(Figure 27) and click Generate. A .csv file is produced, which can be opened in Excel.
Closing the Presentation and Returning the Kit to the Bags
After the session has ended please ensure you do the following:
1. Close the PowerPoint presentation.
2. Remove the Qwizdom USB stick from the USB port and return it to the bag, safely in the
protective bubble wrap sheath.
3. Collect in all the Qwizdom Clickers and turn off any that are still on.
4. Return the clickers to the bag and audit the bag contents to check USB stick, Master Clicker
and all 50 clickers are present.
5. Return the bags to the Learning and Teaching Support Team within Information Services.
Details of team members are on the Information Services web site:

The Qwizdom Kit
The following Qwizdom kit may be borrowed from the Learning and Teaching Support Team within
Information Services. For more details, please contact your Faculty’s Digital Learning Developer:
http://www.stir.ac.uk/is/student/about/teams/learningandteachingsupport/.
The Qwizdom Bags
There are two Qwizdom bags. One contains the Qwizdom USB stick, the master controller and 32 of
the 50 clicker handsets. The other bag contains the other 18 handsets (Figure 29).
Figure 29 - The Qwizdom bags
The Qwizdom USB stick
This is integral to the software working and must not be lost as there is only one and no replacement
is readily available (i.e. a replacement would have to be ordered at cost and no-one could use
Qwizdom with the clicker handsets until that replacement had arrived and been configured). The USB
lives in a protective bubble wrap sleeve in one of the Qwizdom bags (Figure 30).
Figure 30 - The Qwizdom USB stick
The Qwizdom Clickers
There are 50 clickers (red) and one master clicker (grey). Each of the clickers is numbered with a sticker
on the top at the back (an example of which is circled in Figure 31 below). Please ensure all the clickers
is are returned at the end of a session.
