Year 5/6 Autumn Term - Topic Linked.
Topic Entry Point
Children will be taking part in a range of activities throughout a two hour session with a Mayan expert! ‘Big Nose’ will
engage the children in learning about this ancient civilisation from Mexico.

The Big Idea
In History, we’ll be finding out:
Numeracy:

The children will learn about how the
Mayan people recorded numbers and
will be able to read and record numbers
using Mayan symbols.
• About the Maya from the buildings and artefacts they left behind
• How the Maya worshipped their gods
• How the Maya used glyphs for writing and counting
• Why the Maya empire declined
In Art, we’ll be finding out:
• How to make West African masquerade masks and costumes
Year 5/6 Autumn Term -Stand alone units.
Literacy:
Numeracy:
In Year 5, the children will be exploring poetry and descriptive narrative
writing through the poem “The Highwayman’. They will look at diary
entries and stories from other cultures based on the Mayan culture.
In Year 5, the children will be counting forwards and backwards in 6s, 7s, 8s
and 9s, along with negative and positive numbers. They will be reading,
writing, ordering, comparing and rounding numbers up to 1,000,000. They
will also learn how to solve problems, involving all of the above, including
addition and subtraction.
In Year 6, the children will discover how to write a narrative flashback
and, like Year 5, will learn how to write formal/informal letters and diary
accounts.
In Year 6, we will master the efficient written methods of long
multiplication and division.
All children will learn about how to construct different sentences based
on the work of Alan Peat.
Religious Education

The children will be looking at
Christianity. They will be learning
about finding verse and chapters in
the Bible, stories from the Bible
and Jesus’ miracles.

Also, we will learn how to multiply and divide mentally by 10, 100 and
1000 mentally.
Physical Education
Modern Languages
P.S.H.E.
The children will be concentrating
on ball skills this term e.g football,
hockey, basketball. A specialist
coach will be teaching the children
essential ball skills.

* The children will discuss what their
rights and responsibilities are regarding
their learning within school.
The children will be beginning to
learn French during this term. A
specialist teacher of MFL will be
teaching the children during these
sessions.
