THE TEMPEST
CARLOS
CARVALHEIRO
Milan version.
Version for two languages based on the
play by
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
TRANSLATION: CLÁUDIA GOMES

This version is based on the use of two languages, Normal type referring

Naples”.
SUMMARY
Alonso the King of Naples sent his brother Sebastian to Milan to convince
Antonio to usurp his brother Duke Prospero’s throne. Prospero and his
daughter Miranda were abandoned on the high seas by Gonzalo who
thereby disobeyed the King’s orders to kill them both. Thanks to the map
of the sea left to them by Gonzalo, Prospero and Miranda arrived on an
island meeting Ariel and a savage called Caliban. Prospero convinced
Ariel to unleash a tempest that provoked the shipwreck of the vessel in
which Alonso and his son Ferdinand, Sebastian, Antonio and several
Mariners were voyaging on as they were returning from the wedding of
Claribel, Alonso’s daughter. Shipwrecked on the island in separate
groups, they all believed the others were dead. Prospero and Ariel
created situations to drive their enemies to despair. While Prospero could
finally take revenge on them for what they did to him, he decided to
forgive them and all of them were returned back home.

[Sebastian enters with Gonzalo - both with a picture

Antonio: [enters with a picture frame with milan
translator] Sebastian! I was told you had arrived. What
a nice surprise. How is Naples?
Sebastian: Well, Antonio, well - and here in Milan?
Milan Translator: Sebastian says: Well, Antonio, well.
And here in Milan?
Antonio: Everything’s the same. Prospero’s still in
charge, but instead of taking care of his dukedom he
prefers jumbling about in his fantasy and enchantment
studies. And here I am, doing his job, taking care of the
business of the state and yet I remain the eternal
second heir.
Sebastian: Well you know my brother Alonso - the King
of Naples, would be willing to support you as Duke of
Milan if you agree to give him servitude.
Milan Translator: Sebastian says: Well, Antonio, well.
And here in Milan?
Milan Translator: Well you know my brother Alonso –
the King of Naples, would be willing to support you as
Duke of Milan if you agree to give him servitude.
Antonio: That’s a high proposal indeed! But you know
Prospero has always managed to keep Milan
independent.
Sebastian: Ambition has its costs, Antonio. If you want

to be a Duke, you have to pay for it.
Milan Translator: Sebastian says: Ambition has its
costs, Antonio. If you want to be a Duke, you have to
pay for it.
Antonio: Did you come to Milan just to make me such a
proposal?
Sebastian: Yes. Although of course there are two
official reasons. The first is to invite the Duke of Milan
to be part of the committee of the wedding of Claribel.
costs, Antonio. If you want to be a Duke, you have to
pay for it.
Milan Translator: Yes. Although of course there are
two official reasons. The first is to invite the Duke of
Milan to be part of the committee of the wedding of
Claribel.
Antonio: the daughter of the King of Naples is getting
married?
Sebastian: it will be a profitable marriage. Claribel will
wed the successor to the throne of Tunis.
Milan Translator: it will be a profitable marriage.
Claribel will wed the successor to the throne of Tunis.
Antonio: Is Alonso marrying his daughter to a moor?
Sebastian: Oh don’t be so uptight Antonio. A marriage
with an African inheritor will allow the growth of Naples’
influence through Africa, an all new continent left to
discover, but still known by its richness. A daughter
weight less than the heavy costs of a military invasion.
And a marriage is much sweeter. Of course I must
mention that, the son of Alonso, Ferdinand, my nephew
Ferdinand, is the successor of the throne of Naples.
Antonio: You could still marry him to Miranda, the
daughter of Prospero...
Sebastian: Yes, but that unity would take a good 10
years at least to come into fruition. And of course
Prospero would demand a united definition of the
external policy. And the king of Naples bears in mind a
totally different policy to Prospero’s.
Antonio: I imagine that’s where I show up...
Sebastian: If you wish, future Duke of Milan.
Antonio: What shall we do with Prospero? Kill him?
Sebastian: What a strong word! Why don’t you say ...
make him disappear, instead?

Antonio: And Miranda?
Sebastian: Also disappeared - by magic! Isn’t that the
speciality of Prospero?
Milan Translator: Also disappeared - by magic! Isn’t
that the speciality of Prospero?
Antonio: No one in Milan would believe in that.
Prospero is loved around here.
Sebastian: Well why do think I brought Gonzalo? The
King of Naples is willing to help you in everything.
Antonio: Ah! And with the disappearance of Prospero
and Miranda the government of Milan would fall back
on … me?
Sebastian: Inevitably. The King of Naples can’t afford to
usurp the throne of Milan. He prefers a Milanese noble
in power.
Antonio: One that is faithful to him.
Sebastian: And a quick learner. [Smile] Gonzalo is at
your service. You must understand, Antonio, that it is
convenient to Naples to keep my visit confidential.
Antonio: Naturally, Sebastian.
Sebastian: [Makes to leave while checking her itinerary]
ah, I almost forgot! [Turns back and formally addresses
Antonio formally] my brother, the king of Naples would
be honoured for the true Duke of Milan to attend the
wedding of his daughter Claribel to the inheritor of the
throne of Tunis.
Antonio: [Formally] Inform the king of Naples that
the Duke of Milan is highly honoured to accepting his
invitation.
Sebastian: Thank you Antonio, I shall. Good bye [kiss
on each cheek] no doubt we shall be doing much more
business together soon.
Milan Translator: Why do think I brought Gonzalo?
The King of Naples is willing to help you in
everything.

Prospero: [enters with a map of the seas and the
picture frame] My brother told me that you bring an
urgent message from the king of Naples…
Gonzalo: So it is my lord. I was ordered to make you
disappear.
Milan Translator: So it is my lord. I was ordered to
make you disappear.
Prospero: What kind of joke is this? Do you dare insult
me in my own house?
Naples Translator: What kind of joke is this? Do you
dare insult me in my own house?
Gonzalo: Duke Prospero, forgive me. I owe loyalty to
the king Alonso of Naples and therefore I must execute
the order I was given, to make you “disappear”. But I
won’t be so scrupulous to keep my promise and have
your blood on my hands. Instead I shall put you on
board a Neapolitan ship and once in open water, I shall
abandon you in a boat hoping honestly that providence
helps you find a new land.
Milan Translator: Duke Prospero, forgive me. I owe

Prospero: What makes you think I will oblige?
Gonzalo: I beg you not to resist.
Milan Translator: I beg you not to resist. [Prospero
lets the frame fall a bit]
Prospero: What are you going to do with my daughter?
Gonzalo: For better or worse your daughter
accompanies you.
Milan Translator: For better or worse your daughter
accompanies you.
Antonio: [pushing Miranda who enters with a Picture
frame] Miranda, my sweet niece, go to your darling
father - go.
THE TEMPESTCARLOS CARVALHEIRO

Miranda: Father, what does all this mean?
Prospero: Mutiny, my daughter.
Miranda: But what does that mean?!
Prospero: It means dear girl that your uncle Antonio
conspired with the king of Naples to usurp me and take
control of the Dukedom of Milan. [Takes her picture
frame out]
Miranda: But he’s your brother...
Prospero: So your grandmother tells me.
Antonio: Hurry up. [Exits]
Gonzalo: [Gives back the frames to Prospero and
Miranda] Here I abandon you to your own fortune. I
hope that some divine intervention finds you. [Exits
with Naples translator]
Milan Translator: Here I abandon you to your own

THE ISLAND
MIRANDA • PROSPERO
[S3]
[Prospero and Miranda are on their voyage]
Miranda: What will happen to us?
Prospero: I don’t know my daughter. But we have to be
grateful to Gonzalo.
Miranda: But he was the one who left us like this!
Prospero: Gonzalo is a vassal of the authority of
Naples. He had to execute what he was ordered. But
instead left us alive and with a boat, without it we would
be useless, and we have this map of the seas. [Unrolls
the map of the seas] Look. He left us here. We came
this way. And we are here now. Follow our route. [S4]
Miranda: [Follows the route until she sees land]
Father! Land! Over there.
Prospero: We are saved. That’s the most important
thing for the moment. [Disembark]Look at our island.
Miranda: Is this our new home?
THE TEMPESTCARLOS CARVALHEIRO
6
Prospero: It is. Arrange our few belongings. I’m going
to explore the surroundings.
[Miranda grabs the frames and weary, falls asleep]

ENCOUNTER
PROSPERO • ARIEL
[S5]
Prospero: [After hearing moans and cries] Who are
you?
Ariel: I’m a very nice spirit. I’m a very nice spirit.
Prospero: What’s your name?
Ariel: I’m Ariel. I’m Ariel.
Prospero: What are you doing?
Ariel: I’m imprisoned, Prospero. I’m imprisoned,
Prospero.
Prospero: How do you know my name?
Ariel: I can read thoughts. Now you are wondering who
might have trapped me? I can read thoughts. Now you
are wondering who might have arrested me?
Prospero: I am. Who trapped you?
Ariel: It was a witch who wanted to take advantage of
my powers for evil. It was a witch who wanted to take
advantage of my powers for evil
Prospero: And what have you done?
Ariel: I unleashed a storm on her. So she imprisoned
me here. I unleashed a storm on her. So she
imprisoned me here
Prospero: And what about her now? Where is she?
Ariel: She died. There’s only a son of hers left, Caliban.
She died. There’s only a son of hers left, Caliban.
Prospero: Where is he?
Ariel: Caliban is preparing to ... meet your daughter
Miranda. Caliban is preparing to meet your daughter
Miranda.

Caliban: [Approaching Miranda] You? You?
Miranda: [waking up] I am Miranda. Who are you?
Caliban: Caliban, King! King. You beautiful. You
beautiful. [Immobilises miranda]
Miranda: Why are you staring at me like that? [Caliban
attacks Miranda]
Prospero: [knocking Caliban down] What are you
doing?
Caliban: Meeting Miranda, meeting. Me Caliban, King
King. My Miranda, my Miranda.
Prospero: And I am Prospero her father. You are not
going to rape my daughter. You are not going to rape
my daughter.
Caliban: [Casts a spell] Spell! Spell!
Prospero: [The spell fails] Get away. Get away.
Caliban: [Cowers] Ai ai. [gets out]
Prospero: [Frees miranda, caresses her and she falls
asleep] Sleep my daughter.

LIBERATION
ARIEL • PROSPERO
Prospero: [Turns to Ariel] Thank you, Ariel. I am in
debt to you.
Ariel: You can pay your debt: release me. You can pay
your debt: release me.
Prospero: I wish I could do it.
Ariel: Can’t you do it? Haven’t you been spending your
life studying fantasy? If you want, you can release me.
Can’t you do it? Haven’t you been spending your life

Prospero: How can I do that?
Ariel: Say the word. Say the word.
Prospero: But will it work?
Ariel: Try it out. Come on, say the word. Try it out.
Come on, say the word.
Prospero: Very well. Be free. [S5 ]
Ariel: [Approaches Prospero] See how easy it was.
Thank you. See how easy it was. Thank you.
Prospero: You said you created a tempest to punish
the witch…
Ariel: Yes, I created a tempest to punish the witch and
now you want me to create another one because your
enemies are passing through the coast of this island
coming from a wedding. And you would like them to be
shipwrecked here. Yes it was. I created a tempest to
punish the witch and now you want me to create
another one because your enemies are passing
through the coast of this island coming from a wedding.
And you would like them to shipwreck here.
Prospero: Can you do that?
Ariel: I would be glad to, Prospero. I would be glad,
Prospero.

ENCHANTMENT
(ARIEL) • FERDINAND • MIRANDA • PROSPERO
Miranda: [whisper] If it is due to your art, my dear
father, that this tempest was unleashed, calm it down!
That ship, with all those inside, is fallen to pieces. Poor
creatures. If only I could save them!
Prospero: Calm down, my daughter. Nothing too bad
has happened. [whisper] Calm down, my daughter.
Nothing bad happened
Miranda: But I saw.
Prospero: I told you, nothing bad happened. Calm
down. What you saw was an illusion, for you and for
those who were on board the ship. No harm came to
any of them. So far I only wanted to have them
shipwrecked on this island. Here comes the first one,
the son of the most important voyager. [whisper] I told
you, nothing bad happened. Calm down. What you saw
was an illusion, for you and for those who were on
board the ship. No harm came to any of them. So far I
only wanted to have them shipwrecked on this island.
Here comes the first one, the son of the most important
voyager.
Ferdinand: [Enters, framed by a picture frame] What
music is this? It brought me here believing I would find
survivors. But there’s no one here. [whisper] What

find survivors. But there’s no one here.

Miranda: How handsome he is! [whisper] How

Prospero: Yes, despite that tiring look, one could say
he is a handsome boy. [whisper] Yes, despite that tiring
look, one could say he is a handsome boy.
Miranda: He is so handsome. [whisper] He is so
handsome.
Ferdinand: There’s a girl over there… Am I dreaming?
Gorgeous girl, do you live on this island?
Miranda: You are not dreaming… Gorgeous no, Sir, but
girl yes. And I live on this island. And you, who are
you?
Ferdinand: I would be the first in my land, if I were there
now.
Prospero: The first in your land if you were there? What
would the king of Naples say if he heard you?
Ferdinand: But how do you know the king of Naples?
Poor me that I may now be the King of Naples. My
father was shipwrecked around this island along with
the duke of Milan and other nobles.
Prospero: Do you think you are now the King of Naples
simply because your father was shipwrecked around
this island with the people you speak of? Tell me, what
do you want from here? Are you a spy?
Ferdinand: I am not a spy. I told you, have just been
shipwrecked on this island .
Miranda: Father, he has been shipwrecked.
Prospero: [to Miranda] Shut up! [to Ferdinand] You will
be constricted to hard work until the reasons for your
return are shown.
Ferdinand: You think you can restrict me to hard work?
Never! The reason for my return should be plain. [He is
about to attack prospero with the picture frame, but this
one immobilizes him with the map of the seas]
Prospero: Never? Do you dare attack me? Come, try to

Ferdinand: I can’t attack. I’m stuck.
Miranda: Father, please.
Prospero: [to Miranda]! Let me go! [takes away

puts the map of the seas on his shoulders as if it were
a yoke] You, carry on! [shows the way out to
Ferdinand. Miranda puts the frame next to the others
and follows him. Prospero stays but not visible].

here, don’t be afraid, it’s me, Trinculo!
Stephano: Trinculo? You didn’t die?

Trinculo: Indeed, what a stupid prat!
Caliban: I will teach you where the springs of water are.
Trinculo: He is going to teach you where the springs of

18
Alonso: Be quiet, I beg you!
Sebastian: Got on our knees in front of you begging not
to give your daughter away to an African. Among
repugnance and obedience, we submit ourselves at
last. On the way back we lost your son forever. Milan
and Naples will be full of widows. All by your fault.
Alonso: I know.
Gonzalo: Sir Sebastian, the truth you say there lacks
charity and opportunity. You itch the wound instead of
putting balsam.
Sebastian: But it’s the truth.
Gonzalo: We are all having a rough time, my good sir.
Sebastian: A rough time?
Milan translator: Be quiet, I beg you!
Milan translator:: Got on our knees in front of you
begging not to give your daughter away to an African.
Among repugnance and obedience, we submit
ourselves at last. On the way back we lost your son
forever. Milan and Naples will be full of widows. All by
your fault.

Milan translator: But it is the truth.
Milan translator: We are all having a rough time, my

Milan translator: A rough time?
Antonio: A tempest!
Gonzalo: If only I were in charge of cultivating this
island, my good sir…
Milan translator: If only I were in charge of cultivating
this island, my good sir.
Antonio: You would grow nettles.
Sebastian: Or brambles.
Milan translator: Or brambles.
Alonso: Shut up, I beg you. What you say is nothing
and it is the same for me. I feel that my eyes wish to
close down.
Milan translator: Shut up, I beg you. What you say is
nothing and it is the same for me. [ariel puts alonso
and gonzalo to sleep] I feel that my eyes wish to
close down. [falls asleep]
Gonzalo: I also got sleepy suddenly.
Milan translator: I also got sleepy suddenly.
[Falls asleep]
Antonio: They fell asleep quickly!
THE TEMPESTCARLOS CARVALHEIRO
19
Sebastian: How strange sleepiness seized them so
abruptly.
Antonio: It’s probably due to the climate.
Sebastian: So why doesn’t it attack us too? I am not
sleepy.
Milan translator: How strange sleepiness seized them
so abruptly.
Milan translator: So why doesn’t it attack us too? I am
not sleepy.
Antonio: Neither am I. How strange. They fell asleep at
the same time. See: the occasion invites you. I am
already seeing a crown falling onto your head.
Sebastian: Are you delirious?
Antonio: Aren’t you listening to me?
Sebastian: I am, but your words are words from one
that is dreaming.
Antonio: You are the one who is letting your dream
escape. You are the one that, being awake, closes your
eyes.
Milan translator: Are you delirious?
Milan translator: I am, but your words are words from
one that is dreaming.
Sebastian: Well, there’s a sense in your snoring.
Antonio: I speak more seriously than ever.
Sebastian: Then explain yourself better.
Milan translator: Well, there’s a sense in your snoring.
Milan translator: Then explain yourself better.
Antonio: Is there any hope that Ferdinand, the son of
the king who’s over there, has saved himself?
Sebastian: None.
Antonio: Who is, after him, the next inheritor of the
throne of Naples?
Milan translator: None
Sebastian: My niece Claribel.
Antonio: The one that is now the Queen of Tunes and
that lives behind the sunset?
Sebastian: And so? What has the distance between
Tunis and Naples got to do with the inheritor of the

of the throne?
Antonio: All would say: “Would Claribel leave Tunis and
come to Naples? Do we want a black king? No, let her
stay in Tunes and let Sebastian govern!” If you thought
like me, you would take advantage of their sleep. Are
you understanding me?
Sebastian: I think so. As you have supplanted your
brother Prospero…
Milan translator: I think so. As you have supplanted
your brother Prospero…
Antonio: The servers of my brother were my mates.
Now they are my servers.
Sebastian: And the conscience? Doesn’t it weigh?
Antonio: Conscience, Sebastian? What is that? Look at
your brother laying there. If he were dead, something
you could do in a nick of time, I would do the same to
the neighbour carcass near me and mister Prudêncio
couldn’t testify anything. After this shipwreck all would
say that it is merely convenient...
Milan translator: And the conscience? Doesn’t it
weigh?
Sebastian: What would you gain from this?
Milan translator: What would you gain from this?
Antonio: We had to revise the subjection of Milan to
Naples. I have always wanted to be king.
Sebastian: As soon as you conquer Milan, Naples will
be mine.
Milan translator: What would you gain from this?
Milan translator: As soon as you conquer Milan,
Naples will be mine.
Antonio: Let’s go. At the same time. [ready to kill
Alonso and Gonzalo with the picture frames. Suddenly
Ariel wakes them up]
Gonzalo: [waking up] What was that? What does that
gloomy look mean?
Alonso: [waking up] What happened?
THE TEMPESTCARLOS CARVALHEIRO
Milan translator: What was that? What does that
gloomy look mean?
Milan Translator: What happened?
21
Antonio: Didn’t you hear the roar of a lion?
Alonso: I didn’t hear a thing.
Milan translator: I didn’t hear a thing
.
Sebastian: It was the roar of a pack of lions.
Milan translator: It was the roar of a pack of lions.
Alonso: Let go after that roar. Who knows if wasn’t my
son who provoked it.
Milan translator: Let go after that roar. Who knows if
wasn’t my son who provoked it.
Gonzalo: Show us the way!
Milan translator: Show us the way!
[S12 Exit with the picture frames ready for fighting]
Prospero: Why did you wake them up?
Ariel: I woke them up because you wouldn’t like if
Gonzalo was killed. I woke them up because you
wouldn’t like if Gonzalo was killed.

Ferdinand: No, wonderful girl. I would rather blow out
all my muscles than see you carrying this.
Miranda: It doesn’t bother me. I’ll take it.
Ferdinand: No, wonderful girl. Walk with me. That’s all I
ask.
Miranda: But you look so tired.
Ferdinand: What’s your name?
Miranda: Miranda.
Ferdinand: Wonderful girl, this task that your father
ordered me to carry is as heavy as it is hateful.
However, it becomes light and a pleasure because I
know you are here by my side. Love does these things.
Miranda: The task that my father ordered you to do is
as heavy as hateful and however, it becomes light and

Do you love me?
Ferdinand: More than anything in the world.
Miranda: You love me more than anything in the world?
Ferdinand: You are crying…
Miranda: I am silly for crying at what makes me most
happy.
Ferdinand: If you are with what makes you happiest,
why are you crying?
Miranda: Because of my few merits.
Ferdinand: Because of your few merits? You are
everything I could wish. Do you accept my hand?
