Who should attend: Physicians and other health care practitioners seeking up-to-date
information about addiction issues affecting their patients. Practitioners interested in networking
with other regional addiction professionals.
Educational Objectives:
(1) Gain an understanding of Vermont’s current addiction treatment initiatives and challenges faced.
(2) Understand healthcare providers’ role/obligation to educate and destigmatize the disease of addiction
and mechanisms to educate public officials and citizens.
(3) Learn ways to manage risks associated with patients in addiction treatment who drive motor vehicles.
(4) Become familiar with the use of anti-craving medications for the treatment of alcohol addiction.
(5) Understand the risks of combining medical marijuana and opiates and how to prevent overdoses.
(6) Identify ways to improve communication between addiction treatment programs and community-based
medical practitioners.

About the Speakers
Harry Chen, MD, is Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Health and worked as an emergency
physician at Rutland Regional Medical Center for over 20 years, serving as Medical Director in 1998–
2004.
Steven Kassels, MD, is board certified in Emergency Medicine and Addiction Medicine, is Medical
Director of Community Substance Abuse Centers, and is the author of the novel, Addiction on Trial.
Gordon Smith, Esq., is Executive Vice President of the Maine Medical Association and has served
Maine physicians for over 35 years.
Mark Publicker, MD, FASAM, past president of NNESAM, practices addiction medicine in Portland, ME.
He is an associate clinical professor at Tufts University School of Medicine and Editor-in-Chief of ASAM
Magazine.
Marcus Bachhuber, MD, is a general internist and health services researcher focusing on the impacts of
health policy on drug use and addiction.
Todd Mandell, MD, is president of NNESAM and Chief Medical Officer for Community Substance Abuse
Centers/Merrimack River Medical Services.
Ruth Potee, MD, is a Family Physician at the Valley Medical Group in Greenfield, MA, and serves as
Medical Director of the Franklin County House of Correction and Chair of the Department of Medicine at
Baystate Franklin Medical Center.
Catey Iacuzzi, PsyD, LADC, CCS, is an addiction professional with over 15 years of experience treating
individuals with co-occurring addictive and mental health disorders.
Continuing Medical Education Credit:
The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) designates this live activity for a maximum of
6 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of
their participation in the activity.
