AIMER for Activote ® Installation and Quick Start Guide For use with Promethean Activote® and Activexpression® System. About this Guide This guide will tell you how to install and run AIMER. A full user guide is supplied on the AIMER installation CD, if you encounter problems you should consult these first. If problems persist contact our Technical Support Team by email at [email protected] or view our support pages at http://www.aimereducation.co.uk. Installation AIMER for ACTIVote® has been designed to work with Promethean Activexpression and Activote systems. These system require an Activhub. Aimer requires ActivDriver version of 4.1.14 or above to work correctly. You should check your driver version now. It is recommended you update to the latest version of the drivers. These can be downloaded from www.prometheanworld.com/uk. Version 4.1.14.20 is included on the AIMER CD. Information on the driver update is available from www.prometheanworld.com/uk. AIMER requires a working set of Activexpression or Activote keypads, eithier with an Activote Hub or via a Promethean WhiteBoard. The AIMER package you receive should contain the following items: 1 l The Guide l A set of sticker for your keypads l AIMER installation CD Start Installation 1. Insert the AIMER CD 5. Select the installation directory, (the default location is recommended). Press Install. 2. The following menu should appear. If the installation menu does not start automatically, open the CD-ROM in the Windows Explorer and double click Menu. 6. Installation should complete. Press Close. 3. To install AIMER for the first time click the "Install" text on the AIMER menu. Clicking on "Quick Start Guide" will open this document in Word. "Upgrade" will update an existing AIMER installation and "Exit" will close the menu. 4. The following on screen instructions should appear: Read the license agreement and press “I Agree”. 7. A new desktop icon and start menu should now be present. If you have an Activote® Hub you should plug it in now. The central light should appear solid white. If this does not occur or the lights around the middle flash then the driver needs to be installed or updated. 2 Activating AIMER Registering your Keypad AIMER software requires activation! AIMER now support both Activote and Activexpression keyp ads. Both are supported via a 2.4Ghz Activhub. The following simple steps are required to activate AIMER: l Create an account on AIMER website www.aimereducation.co.uk/user l Activate account via email. l Request an activation key at www.aimereducation.co.uk/requestKey. l Activation key is sent to email address. l Type Activation key into AIMER. AIMER software will run for 45 days before it has to be activated, but you should activate ASAP to ensure continued operation. If you have any problems email: [email protected] Testing your installation You can test the installation by starting AIMER from the desktop icon or Start Menu. The following screen should appear. The first time AIMER runs it may take a while to start as it is performing its initial The 2.4 Ghz Activhub holds details of the keypads, both Activote and Activexpression, registered to the system. You should use Activstudio or Activexpression software to register your keypads. Each keypad should be numbered A001 to A032. AIMER used these numbers to assign keypads to pupils. So when setting up a class pupil Fred gets keypad 1, this corresponds to A001. Any prefix can be used as long as it ends in a number e.g. FRED01. As you move the hub between machines the registered handset move with it so there is no need to registered handset on each new machine, or to have Promethean Activstudio installed. If you are using an old style hub or a hub build into the board (legacy hub) then you will need to register the keypads using AIMER registration on each machine you run AIMER on. Before you use your pads for the first time you need to register and number your keypads. You only need to register your keypad once. Each keypad has a unique ID and that is registered with AIMER at this point. It is also a good idea to label each pod with a number 1 to 32 (or however many you have) thus when you handout the pods for a lesson each child always gets the same pod. configuration. 3 Included with this guide is a set of labels to put on your keypads. If your keypads are not labeled you should label them now, the labels should go on the circular flat surface on the base of the keypad as opposite. If the pods are put in the case with the label showing it's easy for the pupils to pick the correct numbered pod each time. Use the following steps to register your pods: 1. Start AIMER 2. From Help menu select "Test Activote Keypads". 3. Press "Start Registration" The middle button on the hub should now flash, and the window should change as below: pod. Each time you register a new pod the first available number will be selected. This pad will now have ID 1. AIMER can support multiple sets of pods, if this is your second set, change the "keypad set" to one that has not yet been used. 6. Repeat for all your pods. Running your first Quiz! Running your first quiz is very simple. In the AIMER window select the ShortExample quiz in the Quizzes tab. Then select the Run Quiz button. The following window sets up the quiz starting settings. 4. Press the middle button and hold down for a few seconds to register a pod. 5. The following window should appear. You should select the correct number for the You can look up what these settings mean in the AIMER help, for now just press "Finish" and the quiz will start. The quiz 4 window shown below will be displayed. "Press No More Answers" to stop voting and "Power Up" to display how each group did. Different questions add to different attributes for the mascots; either speed, strength, jumping or magic. AIMER uses team based activities to motivate the class. Each team has a mascot The bars next to the mascot represent the mascots abilities for speed, jumping, strength, and magic, which it will use in the end of quiz race. The more correct answers the higher the bar goes and the better the team will do. Your pupils will be divided between the teams (in this case Cat, keypads 1-10. Dog, keypads 11-21 and , Frog, keypads 22-32). Results are recorded individually for each pupil so you can review their performance. Press Start. The first question will be displayed. Their performance in the race at the end of the quiz is determined by how many questions each team answers correctly. This quiz has four questions; press "Next Question" to move on to the next question. When you have answered the last question the "Race" button will appear. Pushing this starts the group race, which will run automatically to a finish. Press "Answer Now" and the pupils can vote. When their number goes yellow in the top voting bar their answer has been received. When the race finishes a podium will be displayed. The race has sound so turn your speakers on! 5 After closing the race with the "X" button, in the top right corner, you can view the result using the results Tab. What to do next? You should consult the AIMER tutorial, which should now be installed on your computer, before you run your first quiz. The tutorial can be accessed from the start menu under Aimer > Help. AIMER Activote® and Activexpression® All new Activote and Activexpress voting device now communicate with your computer using an 2.4 Ghz USB ActivHub. To make this work you will need to install the Promethean driver. When it’s working properly a Promethean icon will be placed in the system tray. The Activotes and Activexpressions are registered on the hub. You should use the Promethean software yo do this. When the hub is working proprly a green light will flash on the hub. Once your voting devices are register on the hub, you can move it between machines without reregistering. 6 AIMER and Legacy Activote® Activhub transmitting data (red) Activhub receiving data (green) Connect the Activhub (if required) Install software before connecting the Activhub. Insert the Activhub connector into the USB socket on your PC. The pattern of lights on the hub illuminate to indicate certain functions: The six Function Indicator LEDs spin around the hub whilst communication with the driver is being established. Central When the driver has been detected, the orange LEDs stop Globe spinning and the central globe LED illuminates white. This (white) LED provides a constant white illumination to indicate normal operation and flashes during the registration process. Function Indicator (flash orange) The top right LED flashes green when Activote data is received. The top left LED flashes red when the hub transmits data. If the orange lights around the hub continue to spin, your computer might have defaulted to the wrong driver. A free USB 1 or USB 2 port Aimer is wholly written in JAVA, thus it can be run on a variety of hardware and software, including Mac OS 10, older Windows versions (98SE, 2000 and ME) and Linux.
