Venue Chiddingfold

The Crown GU8 4TU
After storms and the wettest
January on record we
wondered what to expect.
But we had a high turnout in
this historic & pretty village
deep into SW Surrey on a
bright Spring day — outside
the longest running licensed
pub in Surrey the GM told us!
But of course we had come
to celebrate the 80th birthday
of Clever Trevor and hadn’t
the hares laid on a feast of a
trail, Champagne & cakes!
Yet the No 1 hare was not to
be seen. Had the No 2 hare
said something? Rather she
was on call for work and we
were out of phone signal. So
after planning & recce’ing the
trail Atalanta entrusted the
trail to Mr G Balls to execute.
us many examples of key
Bridge images in our culture
and thanked the hares before
presenting a delighted Trevor
with a memorial tankard. His
babysitter had come back for
a drink with him!
Belcher stepped in as RA
just as our normal one had
stepped in to help the hare. He
entertained us with amusing
events on the trail before we
rushed off to warm up in the
pub which had a log fire in a
room set aside for us.
Sister Anna sold some very
good marmalade made at the
home of our GM, in aid of our
charity. Growler invited us
back to her local mansion
after the pub.

A BRIDGE
NOT TOO FAR
So as the church clock
chimed 11 we left the green
NWardly to the first check.
FRB solved it down a coy
alley and called us on to a
field, where Popeye had
already eliminated a foot path.
The trail went easterly to a
road where the pack caught
up until flour was found back
to the village.
On the trail the word buzzed
around that the young ones’
hen party last night had a
naked man at it! Reassuringly
he wasn’t a Surrey hasher.
The bride had to dance him!
After about 4 miles of
running we reached a famous
bridge. This was the one built
by Clever T, when he lived in
Dunsfold aged 25 working for
the Forestry Commission. We
met the walkers already there
and soon the champagne and
birthday cake appeared!
As the party got into full
swing
waiting
for
the
octogenarian to cut the tape
across the bridge, locals arrived
to cross. We apologised,
explaining we were with the
man who built the bridge, to
which the young woman
replied ’Oh that must be
Trevor, I used to babysit his
two boys.’ Could we but hope
for such fame after 55 years?
It was about another 2 miles
back to the village where we
slowly arrived anticipating a
happy circle though the wind
was picking up. The GM gave

The Nature of Women
As Covent Garden puts on Don Giovanni this month, which asks
the question why do women so often fall for a bastard, I’m reminded of the converse story of Matilda of Flanders, which my
grandson loves, who is also called William.
Now William I of England decided he would woo Matilda. She told
him she wasn’t interested in a man born out of wedlock. His response was to ride to Flanders and drag her off her horse by her
plaits. Her father arrested him and was about to duel him, when
his daughter announced she would wed no other than William,
then Duke of Normandy. Her father had no choice but to agree.
After William defeated Harold, she became Queen of England,
bore him nine children; he allegedly remaining faithful to her all
his life. She was reputed to be very petite.
