12/4/2014 Program Goal #5 Level 2.0 Knowledge of the feedback types: intrinsic, extrinsic, prescriptive, descriptive, program & parameter Defines the feedback types and provides and example of each. Intrinsic Feedback Extrinsic Feedback • Definition: Information provided to the learner by an outside source. It supplements the intrinsic information they normally have at their disposal. • Definition: Sensory information that is a natural consequence of producing a movement. Prescriptive Feedback • Definition: Information that helps the learner correct his or her movement. Prescriptive Feedback Examples • Badminton: – “Rotate your forearm on your smash to generate more power .” – “Track the movement of the shuttle until the instant you make contact with it.” 1 12/4/2014 Descriptive Feedback Descriptive Feedback Examples • Badminton: • Definition: Description or statement of what happened. – “You lost the point.” – “The shuttle hit the edge of your racquet.” – “You missed the shuttle.” Program feedback Program Feedback Examples • Badminton: • Definition: Feedback that provides error information about the fundamental concepts of a movement. – “Make sure to follow through all the way across your body on your long serve.” – “Make sure you have your feet shoulder width apart and your knees flexed in your ready position.” – On your underhand drop shot, make sure you have your make sure you place your racket under the shuttle and lift it over the net.” Parameter Feedback • Definition: Feedback that provides information about the appropriateness of the parameter values they are selecting (i.e. faster, slower, longer, shorter, earlier, later). Parameter Feedback Examples • Badminton: – “Strike the shuttle with more force on your smash shots.” – “Hit the ball with less force on drop shots.” – “Hit the shuttle further when your opponent is in the front of the court. 2 12/4/2014 What is the difference between descriptive and prescriptive feedback? Level 3.0 Show the relationship between types of feedback and how they can support learning and enhance motor performance Why would prescriptive feedback be more effective for an inexperienced learner? • Prescriptive would be more effective when the performer needs to change what he or she is doing in order to correctly perform the movement or skill. Inexperienced learners don’t always know what they need to do differently to be successful. • Descriptive feedback is merely a description of what the performance while prescriptive feedback provides error correction. How do program and parameter feedback support and enhance motor learning and motor performance? • Parameter feedback is • Both program and parameter feedback that refines the feedback support and enhance movement and provides a learning and motor suggestion to add more force performance. or power for a better result. • Program feedback is directed towards the critical elements of the motor skill and helps less experienced performers learn how to perform the basic movement. Why is parameter feedback less helpful for inexperienced learners? • A less experienced learner does not understand how to perform the basic motor program or skill, and therefore is not ready to refine the movement and consider the parameters (force, amplitude, speed, accuracy). 3
