Ordinary, Yet Sacred – LENT 2017
Lenten Worship: Wednesdays at 12:05 and 6:30 p.m.
For our theme this Lent, we have asked each preacher to pick an ordinary object which has spiritual
significance for them. Through their stories we will hear how God has the ability to take even the
most ordinary things of life and use them to manifest his presence in our world.
Once again this year we will be taking part in a round-robin pulpit exchange with other Lutheran
churches in our community. This allows us to hear from a variety of pastors bringing their unique
perspectives on our Lenten theme.

Sunday Greeters:
Smile, Greet, Repeat! What simple instructions, but what a
vital ministry of hospitality! Would you or your family be willing
to greet folks as they come into church on Sunday AM?
·
·
·
·
We need at least one greeter for each doorway to the
main lobby.
We recruit separate greeters for each worship service.
You do not have to greet prior to both services.
Come 20 minutes prior to the service you’re attending and
bless others with this ministry of welcome.
Sr High Youth
Some of our sr high youth recently
volunteered at Ministry on the Margins helping with the Thursday night
food bank. We’ll be serving again on
March 2. Watch the bulletin & website for more dates.
Trinity Camperships
Sign up at the greeter display in the lobby.
Communion Servers:
There will be a meeting for communion servers on Sunday,
March 5th from 9:45-10:15 AM. We will meet in the Community Center at a back table, so get some coffee and join us in
this informational discussion.
We would love to involve new volunteers! This is a wonderful
opportunity to learn what being a communion server is all
about so please join us on March 5th.
If you have questions, please contact Joanne Swonger
([email protected]).
Palm Sunday ...
“Near the Cross”
Palm Sunday is on April 9th and will feature beautiful music
to draw our hearts and minds closer to the Savior. The Choir
will share a lovely suite of songs called “Near the Cross” to
reflect on the power of the cross for our salvation. We invite
you to join the choir in singing this musical presentation!
Because we believe in the value of Christian Camping, Trinity
Lutheran Church will provide scholarships of half the price of
camp (not to exceed $100) to anyone enrolled in Trinity ministries attending Bible Camp. To receive your campership, contact Gracia at Trinity: [email protected] or
223.3560.
Check out Camp of the Cross’s summer camps
at www.campofthecross.com.

The Banquet

It’s not comfortable…
Banquet Director
Volunteer Coordinators needed
The Banquet is looking for regular volunteer coordinators for our
various stations while serving our meals. Since 2005, The Banquet has served 200,000 meals through the generous hands of
over 20,000 volunteers in the Bismarck-Mandan community! Community volunteer involvement is unbelievably generous
and the community need is tremendous! The Banquet would not
exist without volunteers. If you feel this is something you could
fit into your schedule once a month, please contact me at 2024749.
Please check out our website www.BismarckBanquet.com on
weekly hosts and statistics.
If you are interested in hosting a Thursday meal and your business or church can’t come up with the 30 volunteers, your group
can be combined with other small groups. This would enable
you to share both the cost of the meal and the volunteer duties. We don’t want anyone or any group to pass up the opportunity to serve. You can get more information on our website .
Greeting from Steve Schilling,
Trinity’s new president
I have been a member of Trinity since I was
in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.
I began ushering when I was a junior in high
school. I still usher at the 10:30 service in the
center aisle.
You have always had your act together… or at
least that’s the way it appeared. Now there’s a
situation in your life that has thrown everything out of balance.
You recognize that you could use some help, but asking for
help isn’t comfortable. Asking is admitting that you are not in
control, and you don’t want others to know this, but sometimes
asking for – and accepting – help may be the best way to regain some balance in your life.
The only persons who will know you have asked for help from
a Stephen Minister are the Stephen Leaders who match you
with a Stephen Minister and the Stephen Minister who meets
with you. Even the other Stephen Ministers who provide support during supervision sessions will not know who you are.
The people around you will not know you are receiving care
unless you tell them.
We currently have Stephen Ministers who are not assigned to
a Care Receiver, so if you need care now, talk to one of the
pastors, to a Stephen Leader (Karen Botine, Margaret Fiechtner), or fill out the green Confidential Care Request card in the
pew rack and drop it in the Confidential Care box at the Welcome desk in the lobby. If you know someone who would benefit from a Stephen Minister’s care, please encourage that
person to request a Stephen Minister, or make a referral (with
the person’s permission, of course).
12-for-12 Toy Drive during Lent.
I have been in education most of my adult life. As a classroom
teacher, I have taught every grade from 7th grade in junior high
to seniors in college.
As President, I want to continue my service and leadership in
the congregation. Trinity Lutheran Church is a deeply generous,
caring and faithful congregation. I look forward to continuing that
tradition, a tradition that began over a hundred years ago. I am
honored by my election.
This Lent we invite you to join in a toy drive that we are doing
for Ministry on the Margins. Each week many children come
through the Ministry on the Margins food pantry. Many of
them have very little in the way of toys and so each child who
visits the pantry is permitted to take one toy.. To help with
the toy drive, please bring a new, unopened toy to the
church. We are looking for toys that cost $12 and under that
are appropriate for kids 12 and under. There will be a collection point in the church lobby. Thank you for your generosity
in helping God’s little ones!

Trust Fund Spotlight
Do You Have a Dream?
When the Trust Fund was established in 1987, its
stated purpose was to enhance the work of the
Church by establishing new ministries and stewardship opportunities additional to and apart from the general operation of the
congregation. That is still the purpose of both the Trust Fund
and the Endowment Fund, as stated in the current Bylaws
(amended in 2014). As the principal of the two Funds has
grown, the amount of income available for use has also grown.
Some of that income is restricted to a specific use, but a large
amount is unrestricted and can be used in a variety of ways,
depending on what needs are identified.
During 2017 the Trust Fund Committee will be inviting each of
the Boards and Committees of the congregation to attend a
Trust Fund meeting and to share their goals and dreams for the
work of their Board/Committee, and to answer the question,
How could the Trust and Endowment Funds help you reach
those goals and make those dreams a reality? Could we provide “seed money” to jump-start a new venture? Is there a onetime project or activity that needs financial support? If you are a
member of one of these Boards or Committees, begin thinking
about these questions now. As stewards of the gifts that have
been given to the Trust and Endowment Funds, the Committee
wants to give the best possible support in carrying out the mission of Trinity.
Do you have questions about the Trust Fund or Endowment
Fund? Do you have ideas about how to use income from the
Funds? Is a gift to either Fund somewhere in your plans or do
you have questions about making a gift? If you answered yes to
any of these questions, talk to a Trust Fund Committee member:
Richard Bjornson, Karen Botine, Richard Hansen, Dwight Offerman, or Susan Weiand.
Trust Fund scholarship available
Scholarship applications are available in the church office or
on our website and must be turned in by March 30.
Any graduating high school senior or post-secondary student
who is a Trinity member is eligible to be considered to receive
a scholarship for post-high school education.
