What are units? - Physical Science

I can use the metric
system.

What are Units?
A simple concept that is difficult to put into
simple words.
“A determinate quantity adopted as a standard
of measure”
What are units?
A standard size, value, or quantity for a certain
measurement.
Other measurements are made by comparing to
this standard.
“a definite magnitude of a physical quantity…
used as a standard for measurement of the same
physical quantity.”
Units
Most physical properties can be measured in
several different units.
We can compare lengths to someone’s foot, the
distance light travels in a certain amount of
time, or the size of an atom.
Game
This game is similar to the game “Scategories”.
Each student will list as many units of measurement
as they can in 5-10 minutes.
We will then compare lists as a class. If a student
has a unit on their list that no other students in the
class have on their lists they get 1 point.
You can list units of length, area, volume, time,
mass, force, energy, temperature, and any others
you can think of as long as they are/were actually
used in real life.
Why use the metric system?
The metric system is based on the number 10.
Unit conversions are simpler.
The metric system is used in almost every other
country.
Derived Units
Derived units are made of multiple base units.
Example: The unit for velocity is meters per
second. It is made of a unit for distance and a
unit for time.
Base Units
Each type of measurement has a base unit, the
other units are defined as multiples or fractions
of the base unit.

Named Derived Units
Some derived units are given their own name
because they are long or complicated.
The unit for force is the Newton which is the
same as a ‘kilogram meter per second squared’
ki log ram * meter

Prefixes
Prefixes are used to make units that are a
multiple or fraction of the base unit.

Conversion Staircase
To convert metric units count the number of
steps and direction on the stair case below.
I can convert within the
metric system
How many milliliters are in one hectoliter?
How many millimeters are in 65 centimeters?
How many decagrams are in 0.86 decigrams?
Abbreviations
We first write the abbreviation for the prefix and
then the abbreviation for the base unit.

We use 1 or 2 letter abbreviations to make writing
metric units easier.
