MAIN RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research focuses on magma properties and dynamics and their consequences in terms of
eruption processes. I aim at combining petrology with numerical computational studies. I am
currently working or have worked on the following projects:
1.
Assessing the hazard from Sumatran volcanoes. EOS funded project combining
volcano morphology, stratigraphy, tephrostratigraphy, and petrology to better understand
the number and intensity of eruptions that occurred in Sumatra during the Holocene.
2.
Magma degassing and controls on eruption style. EOS funded project focused on
porosity-permeability relationships in recent Merapi dome samples; volatile contents,
crystallinities, vesicularities of Rabaul lavas and pumice; S-isotopes in minerals and melt
inclusions from the 1991 Pinatubo eruption.
3.
Petrologic investigation of the magma storage conditions and eruption processes
at Merapi volcano: Understanding the unusually large and explosive eruptions by
comparing the 1872, 1942, 1961, 2006 and 2020 eruptions.
4.
Investigation of caldera unrest: Linking magmatic processes to geophysical
signals by means of petrology and numerical modeling with the example of Rabaul (Papua
New Guinea). Postdoc in collaboration with F. Costa Rodriguez (EOS, Singapore) and C.
Huber (GaTech, Atlanta), funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (fellowship
PBGEP2_139851).
SCIENTIFIC SKILLS
Field work: In the Aegean Arc (2 weeks), the Southern Volcanic Zone of the Andes (13 weeks
over 3 years), and Papua New Guinea (10 days). Field camps in the Sierra Nevada of California
and the Southern Volcanic Zone of the Andes (3 weeks).
Analytical skills:
• Assistant in the 40Ar/39Ar geochronology laboratory, Earth Sciences Section, University
of Geneva (2006),
• Regular analysis using the Electron Microprobe at the University of Lausanne,
Switzerland (2008-2011) and Earth Observatory of Singapore (2012),
• Use of a Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (SIMS) in Tempe, Arizona (2009, 2013),
• Use of a LA-ICP-MS at the University of Lausanne (2009) and the Australian National
University in Canberra (2011).
Computational skills: Familiar with Microsoft and Linux (Red Hat and Open Suse) operating
systems, programming with Matlab and Fortran, and the use of specialized algorithms such as
MELTS.
TEACHING
Field work: Accompanied the 2nd year Bachelors students of Geneva to the Massif Central for
a one week Volcanology field camp during which they learned how to identify and map

volcanic deposits (four trips from 2007-2010).
Lab work: Primary responsibility for the microscopy labs (2-4h/week over four semesters,
2008-2011) associated with the course in Magmatic Petrology for the 3rd year Bachelors
students of Geneva. These consisted in learning how to recognize magmatic rocks, textures,
and processes using an optical microscope.
Courses: Two 3-hour lectures on magma rheology as part of the Magmatic Petrology and
Volcanology class in the 2nd year of the Bachelors degree (Feb 2011).
Outreach: Developing the general knowledge of geology in the curriculum of Singapore
schools. This consisted in accompanying a group of Singapore Geography teachers for a one
week field excursion to Merapi volcano, Indonesia, (June 2012) as well as participating in the
pre- and post-excursion workshops.
