Jeannette Rankin Peace Center E-newsletter & Calendar for April 14, 2011 “It is a tragic mix-up when the United States spends $500,000 for every enemy soldier killed, and only $53 annually on the victims of poverty.” ~Martin Luther King, Jr. Dear Friends, With huge cuts in the federal, state, and local governments as well as tightening budgets in the private sector, we are headed into increased poverty. Alejandro Toledo, the first Indigenous President elected in Peru (2000 - 2006) said, “Poverty is the greatest act of terrorism.” Poverty is the inability to help ourselves; it is despair from not having enough food, not having adequate shelter. It is lack of opportunity to education and human services that would improve personal economy and family relations. These cut backs are done by a group of leaders who still view rights to be given to white male land owners. These policies are to eliminate government in which we still have voting rights and turn most of the control to corporations where we have no voting rights. These corporations subjugate people by constant destruction of the earth. These leaders when confronted about their actions hold the bible in their hand and say the word, “abortion,” which brings many people to emotional turmoil. People in emotional turmoil are easily manipulated. If we look beyond these leaders’ religious convictions, we will see that it is really about power and control. Their god is not from a holy book but is money. Ordinary people can still be empowered by voting not only in elections but with our spending practices. We can defy this by choosing to live, loving our neighbors, taking care of our families, sharing in community, and standing up against the greatest act of terror – poverty. Lisa Lotte Hardiman, Great Falls PS: You can start by showing up for the Rally on Monday, April 18, 4 pm in front of the Post Office on Broadway in Missoula -- Bring our War Dollars Home and Demand that Corporations pay their taxes!
