How To Tell If Your ID Has Been Hacked!
The 2013 Identity Fraud Report from Javelin Strategy & Research, Pleasanton, CA, revealed that
almost one of four consumers who received a data breach letter became a victim of identity theft.
The same study revealed that consumers who had their Social Security number compromised in a
data breach were five times more likely to be a fraud victim than the average consumer.
How can you tell if your identity has been
compromised?

We are in need of three (3) people to join our Supervisory Committee. They meet once a month at the
credit union office (so you would need to live locally) in the afternoon.
If you are interested and would like to discuss the ways in which your skills and experiences can benefit
others, email Lori Olsen at [email protected].

Your Credit Union really is here to help –
I know you think this is just something that all places say to get you in the door to buy their products and
services, but we truly do try. Each person has their own story and circumstances, etc., some of which
may have been chosen and some just forced upon them. If there is something we can do to help, we will
try.
Here is just one example of a good news story - - A member who ran into some hard times a year or so
ago (we will call her Jane Doe to share her story), has now come out the other side and is doing better.
Jane had been a member for a short time and had gotten a car loan to buy a car. She found the car of
her dreams . . . a used Mercedes and she really liked the car. It had leather interior, sunroof and all the
bells and whistles. You probably can relate to her admiration of this car.
Fast forward a few months . . . suddenly she loses her job and panics, how is she going to make the car
payments and a house payment too? She didn’t want to lose her home; it had been in the family for
years. She thought long and hard and called the credit union to discuss her situation and get some
advice. Her final decision was to voluntarily surrender her car back to the credit union. We explained that
by doing so she saved herself on some collection costs, but when the car was sold if there was any
balance left it would be her responsibility – she understood. Sadly, Sheila and I met with her and took the
car for her. It was a tough day for Jane and for us too, watching her make this decision was
heartbreaking.
The CU was able to get the car sold to cover almost her entire balance. While Jane was left with a
balance to pay, it was less than $800.00. At about the same time, a new job came her way and things
were looking up. Jane was able to pay that remaining balance off in less than a year.
She is now in the market for a new car again, and of course she came to her credit union to get
preapproved to go shopping! Jane is excited and happy and we are happy for her too!
This article isn’t intended to suggest returning your car when you get into a financial bind that you feel is
just too much to handle. However, we do want you to understand that there can be options and it may
not be as bad as you think. Think of US when you need some guidance.
