Focus on a few beneficiaries of the project
Vijay Singh Rana owns 0.7 hectares of land, which helps him to
support his family of five. In 2005 he was chosen to set up a crop
of lemon grass (750m2), which to this day produces 15kg of
essential oil per year, providing him with an income of approx. €
150 per year
Unable to expand his lemon grass crop, he chose to start
commercial crops of pepper, okra (350 m2), cucumber and corn
(3750 m2) with the support of the project. He hopes these new
crops
will
provide
him
with an
additional
income.
Vijay is the President of the producer group in her village
Rajawali, a group with 18 members.
Poonan is a producer and lives alone with her mother and
daughter. Her husband is a driver which means he works away
from home a lot of the time. They have 0.7 hectares of land,
which is not irrigable, so they were only able to grow maize on it
in the rainy season.
In 2008, Poonan started growing lemon grass (2500m2) which
is now being used in production, it brings her an income of € 350
per year.
With the support of the project she has begun to cultivate
pepper (350 m2) and cut flowers (750 m2) that she intends to
sell at the festival of Diwali in November, and cucumber together
with Corn (2000 m2).
Rani belongs to a family of six. Her husband is a labourer and earns
very little. She is able to complement the family income by farming.
They have 3000m2 of land, which they rent half. The land is of poor
quality and is not irrigable.
In 2008, she was able to set up 750m2 of lemon grass near to the forest,
which provides her with an income of approx. € 150 per year. This area
of land was unsuitable for food crops as the local monkeys regularly
raided the crops.
To increase her income from farming, she is going to set up crops of
pepper (100 m2), cucumber and corn (2000 m2).
