San Diego Section e-Newsletter MAY 2014 community.asme.org/san_diego_section/default.aspx We at ASME San Diego want to hear from you. Do you have an idea for a program you think ASME should address? Or how you think we can serve better? Email us at [email protected] Chair’s Message to the Membership I may be a mechanical engineer, but I sure do appreciate electrical wizardry. This last month that internet thing has really helped my transportation needs... On the expensive side our section rented a bus that I'm told cost a million dollars. We needed it for transportation on MCAS Miramar to see their F-18, MV-22B, and ARRF fire truck (see a report in next month's newsletter). After a simple search the internet provided 4 quotes for bus service within a day. I love a free market! The 81 passenger double decker we got was enormous. After being wowed by the panoramic glass roof and comfortable seats I was able to look up statistics online. The Van Hool TD925 weighs 30 tons and has a 12L straight 6 diesel but can get up to 486 passenger miles per gallon. It's 13 feet tall and has a 166 gallon fuel tank. On the cheap side our family Volvo's air conditioning went south, but we were able to fix it in a few hours thanks to an online enthusiast guide. If I had to find the problem myself I'd have given up troubleshooting weeks before homing in on the solder joint on the compressor clutch relay. Even with a loupe I could barely see the mechanical break on the back side of the PC board, but resoldering did the trick. What a rude introduction to thermal fatigue in solder joints. In the years immediately following Fulton's success, running these steamboats on rivers, lakes, and bays became a normal and accepted part of American life. But taking such a vessel on a voyage across the ocean was a different proposition altogether. Experienced mariners didn’t think it could be done. These early steamboats, they declared, were just too flimsy and unwieldy to withstand the dangers of the deep. But Captain Moses Rogers believed otherwise. Combining his knowledge of the old mode of transport (sail) with the new mode of transport (steam), he set out to design a vessel that was capable of overcoming the many dangers of the sea. This craft would be not a steamboat, but a "steamship," the first of its kind. She was named Savannah. It indeed became the first steamship to cross the Atlantic, having steamed out from Georgia on May 22, 1819 and arrived at Liverpool on June 20, 1819. Mr. Busch will show how Captain Rogers designed and built this revolutionary vessel...nearly two centuries ago. And along the way overcame the “steam coffin” perception held not only by the passengers, but by his crew as well. The dinner and presentation will be held aboard the “Berkeley”, the 1898 ferryboat that served 60 years in the San Francisco Bay and was a key player in the evacuation of the city during the 1906 earthquake and fire. There will also be a tour of the fully restored 1450 hp triple expansion steam engines that powered the “Berkeley” prior to the dinner and presentation. The bookseller from Blue Stocking Books will also be on hand with copies of the Steam Coffin, for $30, tax included. The 'past chairs night' theme recognizes those who have served our engineering societies. SCHEDULE: 6:00 – 7:00 pm, Social Hour & Tour 7:00 – 8:00 pm, Buffet Dinner 7:30 – 9:00 pm, Presentation COST: Past Chairs–Free; Members--$20; Non-Members--$25; Cash Bar. ASME SAN DIEGO e-NEWSLETTER MAY 2014 PAGE 2 Recent Activities: Annual Awards Banquet 32 members and guests enjoyed the meeting where we recognized the Science and Engineering Fair winners, the 25- and 50-yr members, and the UCSD student paper winners. We also enjoyed the buffet dinner. The show grew this year, and was the biggest it's ever been since our section has had a booth. It was a fun show as usual! Students and professionals stopped by to chat. Many already knew about ASME, but some were hearing about us for the first time. USMC Planes and Equipment Tour Some pictures now.
