Fall 2013 GOODWILL INDUSTRIES ® OF CENTRAL IOWA goodnews GOODWILL: Good for the Community. The Economy. The Environment. Teaming Up With Walgreens Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa has teamed up with Walgreens to create more jobs for individuals with disabilities in Central Iowa. In February 2013, Goodwill partnered with Walgreens to participate in the company’s REDI (Retail Employees with Disabilities Initiative) program. REDI is an in-store training program focused on providing individuals with disabilities training in retail and customer service skills. The goal of this program is to prepare the candidates for employment within Walgreens as a Customer Service Associate. Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa partnered with Walgreens to pilot the REDI program at the Walgreens location on Delaware in Ankeny, Iowa. The inspiration for this joint venture was a win for Goodwill, Walgreens and the community. Not only does it allow Walgreens to increase their outreach in the community, but it offers a positive environment for candidates to receive onthe-job training they need to enter into the workforce. The four to six week training program was founded in 2010 in Dallas/Fort Worth with the goal of broadening Walgreen's workforce and expanding their disability inclusion initiatives. More than 400 individuals nationwide have completed the training program and 66 percent acquired the set of skills needed to excel in a similar retail setting. Locally, five individuals have entered the in-store extern training program. This program provides individuals with experience in customer service, merchandising, inventory, maintaining store displays and signage, along with cash register training. Each trainee will work five days a week for four weeks to complete more than 120 hours of training. In August, Goodwill and Walgreens launched the second of our three planned training session for 2013. “Our staff members have been very receptive to the REDI candidates and are more than willing to help and assist in their professional development. Walgreens has adapted to the program by allowing the candidates to be very hands-on with their training. This has allowed them to experience situations that they may not have had the opportunity to deal with,” said Jenni Slaugh, store manager at the Ankeny Walgreens. Goodwill and Walgreens are excited about the success of this program and hope to expand into more Walgreen stores in 2014. “Dustin Shadle completed REDI training during the first quarter of 2013. He was hired shortly thereafter as a parttime cashier. Because of his aptitude Dustin has been working full time hours for most of his tenure. Dustin regularly receives compliments from customers. The second of three planned REDI trainings has just completed, and Dustin was instrumental in providing training and job shadowing experience for the clients enrolled in those sessions.” Jack Croft Goodwill Job Coach Going With GREEN Donations When you drop off your items at one of our 18 retail locations, you are improving the lives of members of your community!
