THE CORNER HEALTH CENTER:
Leadership Letter
n his March 2010 State of the City
message, Ypsilanti Mayor Paul
Schreiber reflected on the pluses
and minuses of the past year.
Topping the plus column, he cited
The Corner Health Center’s renovation and expansion. We are pleased
to be part of what is good in our
Ypsilanti community.
The opening of our new facilities coincided with the conclusion
of 28 years of visionary leadership from the founding executive director of The Corner, Joan Chesler. Joan made it her
mission and life’s work to empower young people to take
responsibility for their health and their futures. Her retirement
in June marked the end of her daily guidance, but not an end
to her vision. A transition plan and its successful implementation, executed in collaboration between Joan and the Board,
assured that Joan’s legacy would continue under our new
executive director.
The metamorphosis of our facilities
is an indication of how far we have
grown through the years in our
ability to meet our patients’ needs.
Because of our makeover, The Corner
has become a more welcoming,
beautiful, and professional place for
young people and their families.
With twice the number of clinic exam
rooms, we are better able to provide
health care designed to meet the
physical, social, and psychological
needs of young people. We know
we are meeting those needs when
patients tell us why they come to
The Corner. They mention our
convenience, affordability, and
confidentiality. They tell us they feel
comfortable here, that the staff make
them feel welcome and safe. “I get
better care with less hassle,” said one
young woman. “I wish I could keep
coming here forever!”
The past year was very challenging for our budget. With State
and municipal grants shrinking, private funders cutting back
on grants and gifts, and our investments producing less
revenue, times have been tough. We made spending adjustments throughout the year, and received generous gifts from
individual donors and foundations, including a special grant
for operating support from The Ann Arbor Area Community
Foundation. As a result, we ended the year in the black and
did not have to draw on our reserves or dramatically cut
services. Years of sound financial management have positioned
us to deal with a few years of declining grant funding;
however, our future focus must be on enhancing our funding
from other sources if we are to avoid deep service cuts in the
near future. We are fortunate to have the commitment from
the University of Michigan Medical School for attending
physicians and residents from Family Medicine, Internal
Medicine and Pediatrics, Certified Nurse Midwifery, and
Psychiatry, who make our clinic model work.
I

Medical Director
The year has been rewarding for all of us. We owe a debt of
gratitude to our supporters for helping The Corner remain a
tremendous resource for adolescents. With your support, they
are developing healthy lifestyles and behaviors now and
throughout their lives. Thank you!
The building project was successfully
completed and in use the week after
Labor Day. While construction made
day-to-day work a challenge, we remained open for patient
care for all but two days. Reactions from clients, staff, donors,
and community members have been overwhelmingly positive.
The Capital Campaign was successful and we were able to
complete the project without borrowing. We look forward
to making our enhanced meeting space available to other
community groups, thereby building connections and
fostering collaborative partnerships.

THE CORNER HEALTH CENTER:
Providing Quality
Health Care
Clinical Services
For 29 years, The Corner Health Center
has provided primary health care, support,
and health education to meet the unique
needs of adolescents and their children in
a youth-friendly environment. In 2009, we
helped 1,600 young people who visited
more than 6,500 times for care.
“
“I feel very lucky to have served
The Corner for 29 years. At each
clinic session, I meet young people
who face very trying life circumstances. They share their life experience, which gives me the chance
to acknowledge and honor them.
At The Corner, I can offer young
people medical care to help
address immediate needs and,
more importantly, help them draw
upon their own resources and
strengths—in ways that will hopefully inspire them to build a better
future. It really is a chance to practice medicine from the heart.”
David Share, MD, MPH
Medical Director

Our young patients benefit enormously
from our ongoing partnership with the
University of Michigan Health System.
The Corner’s multi-disciplinary caregiver
team includes faculty affiliated with
UMHS Family Medicine, Internal Medicine
and Pediatrics, Certified Nurse Midwifery,
and Psychiatry. The Corner offers practical
learning experiences for their residents
and students. In return, these clinicians
expand access to health care for our
traditionally underserved population.
The value of the donated physician
services was $540,436 in FY 2009.
The Corner Health Center is a vital health
resource for low-income young people in
the community. Most of our patients
come to us without commercial health
insurance. We are able to help many
of them secure public health insurance.
In 2009, our Patient Advocate helped
473 uninsured patients apply for health
insurance; 262 subsequently received
publicly-funded insurance coverage.
Patients without insurance pay on a
sliding fee scale based on their income.
Our Maternal and Infant Health Program
(MIHP) is a Medicaid funded support
program for low income pregnant and
parenting women. MIHP provides coordinated nursing, social work, and nutritional
services for Medicaid-eligible pregnant
and postpartum women. In 2009, The
Corner provided support for 189 MIHP
patients in 658 visits. 94% of babies born
to Corner patients in 2009 were delivered
at normal birth weights.
The Corner offers integrated mental
health services as part of primary care,
making access easier and less stigmatized.
In our collaborative model, mental health
services are provided onsite by our social
worker, a mental health professional from
Community Supports and Treatment
Services, and the UMHS Psychiatry program.
Ten percent of all Corner patients were
seen at least once by Corner psychiatrists
or social workers last year.

Health Education
and Support Services
The Women, Infants, and Children
Supplemental Food Program (WIC) provides food benefits, nutrition education,
and surplus food to low-income pregnant and parenting women and their
children. Through a contract with the
Washtenaw County Public Health
Department, The Corner provides WIC
services onsite. Last year, we served an
average of 530 WIC clients each month.
The Corner Theatre Troupe is a peer
education and outreach program that
focuses on the prevention of unhealthy
behavior among young people. Troupe
members are high school students who
receive special training under the
direction of a health educator and an
actor/playwright. Advanced Troupe
members travel to area elementary,
middle, and high schools, residential
centers, and detention facilities giving
interactive, educational performances
on topics of concern to youth including
substance abuse, dating violence,
depression, and sexually transmitted
diseases.
In 2009, 27 students took part as
beginning or advanced Theatre Troupe
members. They performed for more
than 1,300 youth audience participants
in seven school districts across
Washtenaw County. Troupe members
gave 43 performances followed by 79
reality and skill building workshops.
They captured the trust, interest, and
imagination of their peers while modeling positive behaviors and coping skills.
Affairs, as well as the Michigan
Women’s Foundation, Target Stores,
and other private donors.
The Corner is committed to helping
young people overcome barriers to
good health. Adolescents who cannot
meet their basic needs cannot adequately maintain their health or the health
and safety of their children. To address
these barriers, The Corner offers additional support. At The Corner Store,
patients are able to get baby clothing
and supplies, personal care items,
blankets, and household necessities.
Patients shop at The Store with points
they have earned for practicing good
health behavior such as keeping their
appointments. In 2009, more than 500
patients redeemed points for merchandise or gift cards at The Store for
themselves and their 650 children.
The Corner also maintains a free Food
Pantry for patients. In 2009, the Pantry
served more than 1,500 people in more
than 500 households.
The Corner also provided patients with
tokens for fresh fruits and vegetables
from the Ypsilanti Farmer’s Market. Our
patients also received several hundred
fare tokens for bus transportation
through a generous donation from AATA.
The Corner Theatre Troupe provides
valuable health education, as well as
training for the members themselves.
Many Troupe members go on to pursue
careers in teaching, counseling, acting,
writing, and related fields. The program
received funding last year from the
Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural

MomPower!
Last year, The Corner began offering a special series of parenting
classes for teen mothers. The
program, called MomPower!,
is offered in conjunction with
Maria Muzik, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry at the UM
Medical School, with research
grant funding from Medicaid.
In the first year, 21 mothers and
their 26 children participated in
one of the three, eight-week
MomPower! sessions, where they
learned about child development,
parenting and attachment skills,
and self care. Participants reported
they liked the social support and
children’s activities, gained a
greater understanding of their
children, and increased their ability
to be better parents. They asked
that the sessions be lengthened
to cover more material in greater
depth. As a result, the 2010
sessions have been increased to
ten weeks.
The MomPower! Program was
awarded a first prize for its poster
and abstract presentation at the
Partners for Healthy Communities
Symposium sponsored by the
Michigan Institute for Clinical &
Health Research in May 2009.

THE CORNER HEALTH CENTER • 2009 ANNUAL REPORT
Over the summer, federal funding
provided paid work experiences
for nine area teens. Under the
guidance of Monique Hoyle, a
recent graduate of the UM School
of Social Work who interned at
The Corner while completing her
MSW degree, nine youth between
the ages of 16 and 24 received
more than 60 hours of classroom
training and completed 45 hours
of employment as community
outreach workers for The Corner.
Funding for the program was
administered through the
Employment, Training and
Community Service (ETCS)
Washtenaw County Workforce
Investment Act (WIA) Summer
Youth Employment Program (SYEP).
Three of the outreach workers continued their experience for several
additional months in the roles of
receptionist/medical records clerk,
medical assistant, and outreach
coordinator. The Corner benefited
from the contributions of these
youth, while helping them gain
valuable work experience.

Leaving a Legacy
Alvin Joslyn was passionate about
helping kids; committed to making
their world a better place.
He devoted his long life in service to
young people, and through a generous
bequest to The Corner Health Center,
his work is continuing after his death.
A long time donor to The Corner, Joslyn
was born in Highland Park, MI, in 1914.
He was an only child. In school, he
excelled in science and wanted to become
a doctor, but his pragmatic nature and the
Great Depression steered him to a career
in education. He received his BA from
Michigan State Normal College (EMU)
in 1937 and began teaching.
Alvin Joslyn
You Can Use Your Will
to Change the Future
You don’t have to be wealthy to
make a life transcending gift. Like
Alvin Joslyn, you can make a
bequest to The Corner in your will
or living trust. If you would like to
learn more about bequests and
other planned gifts and how they
can help support The Corner
Health Center, please give us a call
at (734) 714-2236, or visit our Web
site at www.cornerhealth.org.

Joslyn married Erma Meggison in 1938.
They built a house on Sherman Street
in Ypsilanti and started a family. When
Joslyn enlisted in the US Navy during
WWII they already had a son. Lt. Joslyn
served in the Pacific Theatre as an
amphibious landing officer. He followed
the progress of his young family during
his two-year absence through letters that
he and his wife wrote each other daily.
After his return, Joslyn and his wife had
two more sons and a daughter. Joslyn
became assistant principal of Ypsilanti
High School in 1953. He took over as
principal of East Jr. High School from
1959 until 1971, and then served as principal of Adams Elementary School until
his retirement in 1976. He completed
additional degrees from the University of
Michigan and from EMU. Throughout his
career, Joslyn held leadership roles in
educational associations at the local,
state, and national levels.
Joslyn volunteered with many community
groups. He was a member of the First
Baptist Church for more than 70 years
and taught Sunday School for 25 years.
He was a member of the Ypsilanti
Kiwanis Club for more than 60 years.
He helped organize the Club’s bell ringing
efforts for the Salvation Army for more
than two decades. He participated annually
with The Ann Arbor News-sponsored
Warm the Children program, shopping
with families for coats and clothing to keep
children warm throughout the winter.
Joslyn received many awards during his
lifetime, but accolades weren’t what motivated him. As he told a reporter for The
Ann Arbor News in 2003, he was driven by
his desire to “reach out to the community
and most specifically, to youth.”
“Kids were his thing,” according to his
daughter, Marilyn Joslyn Sheets, of
Saline. “He raised four of his own, he
devoted his career to children and even
after his death in 2008 at the age of 93,
he’s still helping young people.”
“My parents lived frugally. My mother
was a bookkeeper at EMU; she watched
every penny.” As a result, the Joslyn’s
nest egg grew to a substantial size.
The couple made provisions in their
estate plan to leave a portion of their
assets to several charitable organizations.
Mrs. Joslyn died in 1998, followed a
decade later by her husband. When
their assets were distributed in 2009,
The Corner Health Center received a
bequest totaling almost $25,000.
“We were completely surprised,” says
Ellen Clement, Executive Director of The
Corner. “Mr. Joslyn never shared his plans
to leave money to The Corner. We regret
that we did not have the opportunity to
recognize him during his life for his
bequest intentions, but we are deeply
grateful for his thoughtfulness.” This
bequest will be invested and only the
earnings will be spent. The principal will
remain untouched, enabling this special
gift to provide support for young people
in perpetuity.

THE CORNER HEALTH CENTER:
The Corner Grows
C
onstruction on The Corner’s expansion and renovation project began
in January 2009 and was completed
shortly after Labor Day. The new space
offers greater privacy, convenience, and
efficiency for patients and clinic staff.
The nine months of construction caused
significant disruption as staff were displaced
from their work spaces and patient flow
was altered. Yet surprisingly, The Corner
remained open for patients for all but
two days when the lobby and reception
area was a hard-hat zone. Throughout
the project, we maintained the high level
of service our patients have come to
expect and value.
The results of the Capital Campaign that
funded the project have been equally
impressive. $1.7 million in new gifts and
pledges was committed by the time the
first work crews arrived. Almost all outstanding pledges have been fulfilled. We
have been able to pay for the construction
without having to borrow bridge funds
and make interest payments. We take
pride in reporting that the project has
been completed on time and within
budget.
The Corner family is deeply grateful to
the hundreds of donors and volunteers
whose support and involvement made
the expansion and renovation project a
success. Young people who come to The
Corner for medical care, health education,
and support services will benefit for
decades to come.
The new Harry A. and Margaret D. Towsley Conference Room provides bright, attractive, functional meeting
space in The Corner’s expanded and renovated facilities.

F
ollowing 28 years of leadership, Joan Chesler retired as founding executive
director of The Corner Health Center on June 20, 2009. To honor her vision
and dedication, The Corner’s Board established the Joan Chesler Legacy
Fund. The Fund will function as an endowment to support initiatives that
advance the mission of The Corner in the areas of organizational development,
staff development or building improvement. We offer heartfelt thanks to the
following people who have generously made gifts totaling $36,810 to establish
