Message from Pastor
This summer has seen a rash (pun intended) of run-ins with a certain plant of the ‘Yicks! Don’t touch that-family’ also
known as Poison Ivy. Three of my family members have suffered from the itchy stuff and all three have sworn they never
want to go through it again. As I did not want to become another of Poison Ivy’s victims, I went on an internet quest to
learn how to identify the trouble maker.
What I discovered from various websites, was that learning to stay away from this plant was going to be more challenging
than I thought, and I began to wonder with as much time as I had spent traipsing around the woods, how I hadn’t become
one of its victims already. I also began to wonder about other things in my life that I needed to be more aware of that were
‘poison’ to myself or to others in relationship with me.
Sometimes we don’t recognize that something is poisonous until we experience some sort of physical distress or symptom.
If we ingest a true poison we might feel nauseated as our body tries to rid itself of the poison. In the case of a rash caused
by poison ivy, the oil from the poison ivy plant causes an allergic reaction. But, if the poison we come into contact with is
caused by emotional or spiritual toxins, it can be a bit trickier to identify.
Emotional poisons tend to affect our self-worth and make us feel as if we will never measure up or we may be made to feel
that our efforts are pointless or unappreciated. Spiritual poison affects hope and creates fear; fear that there is no hope,
fear that God has lost control, fear that God doesn’t care, doesn’t listen, or doesn’t exist. Fr. John Bartunek (google his
name to find out more about him...he is kind of a big deal) describes the loss of hope as discouragement and writes;
To become discouraged is to lose the energy necessary to continue fighting. To
become discouraged is to play with the temptation to give up and give in, to stop trying.
Someone who is discouraged no longer strives after the worthy goal he or she used to
believe in, because that person no longer has any hope that goal is attainable. And that
is precisely why discouragement can never come from the Holy Spirit—in Christ, with
the help of God’s grace, every worthy goal is always attainable. As the angel said to the
Blessed Virgin Mary during the Annunciation: “For nothing will be impossible with
God” (Luke 1:37). And Jesus himself said the same thing: “For human beings this is
impossible, but for God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). That’s why
discouragement always hides some kind of lie. (“Exorcising the Specter of
Discouragement,” August 1, 2016)
“Do not fear” is a major theme in scripture and depending on the version of the Bible you are reading is one of Jesus’ major themes as well…actually, right up there with “love others…” Jesus understands fear but also knew that fear can poison
not only our attitudes, actions and lives, but our world as well. God tells us in Isaiah 41:10, “do not fear, for I am with you,
do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.”
The danger of spiritual poison is not only loss of hope and fear, but that we begin to feel indifferent. Indifference means
that we no longer care nor have sympathy toward someone or something. Indifference and fear are poisons that want
nothing more than to divide and destroy the hope we have in Jesus.
In Christ’s love and grace, Pastor Trish

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP
very faculty you have, your power of thinking or of moving your limbs from
moment to moment, is given you by God. If you devoted every moment of
your whole life exclusively to (God’s) service you could not give (God) anything that
was not in a sense (God’s) already. C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
Servant Leadership Council (SLC)

Salem Columbarium Dedication Service
Sunday, September 4th
9am Worship
Our Sunday worship will begin at our beautiful columbarium as we dedicate and bless our
new columbarium. Our service will continue as we process to our church sanctuary singing
“When the Saints Go Marching In”
A columbarium is a wall of niches to hold the ashes of the deceased. Christians have a long
history of burying their dead close to their places of worship. It is a way to remember that
we are part of the communion of the saints. Death does not end love or community for by
his death Jesus overcame death, not just for himself but for all people.

Organist Jim Hockin Presents “A World of Sound” Concert on Sept. 4th
Twin Cities area professional organist and education specialist with the Rodgers Organ
Studio Jim Hockin will present “A World of Sound” concert on Salem’s newly acquired
digital computer orchestral organ, Sunday, September 4th. The time is 3 to 5pm. Free
admission and open to he public.
Jim has played the organ since age 7, coached by his organist father. He has studied
keyboard performance at the University of Minnesota and served as organist at churches
in the Twin Cities area for more than 40 years. Jim was a piano instructor for the Schmitt
Music Company of Minneapolis and joined with the Minnesota and Lake Harriet
Orchestras to perform piano concertos by classical composers. In recent years, he has
devoted most of his time to the organ and has performed on Rodgers organs since 1972.
Jim would like his audience to know that Salem’s organ is a sampled pipe organ. All
sounds are actual organ pipes from a diverse palette of pipe sounds from famous organs
around the world. The organ has 36 stops, two keyboards and a 32-note pedal board. The
PR-300 orchestral sound module contains 354 orchestral and ethnic sounds producing
live orchestra instrumentation including trumpets, violins, bass drums and piano.
Jim promises the audience “a thrilling musical experience”. He delights in displaying how
the organ is an inspirational instrument for singing and listening. For Salem’s concert,
Jim’s playlist includes theatre organ selections from a by-gone era, a special motion
picture theme, a self piano and organ duet and works by classical composers.
