Course Overview
This course will cover the general aspects of the anatomy of the human body from a systemic
approach. It will be concerned primarily with the gross structures and locations of the different body
parts and organs. The following body systems will be covered in this course: integumentary,
circulatory, musculoskeletal, respiratory, digestive, urinary, nervous, and reproductive.
Course Objectives and Goals
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Recognize, understand, and be able to apply basic anatomical terms.
2. Identify and describe gross and microscopic structures of the human body.
3. Comprehend the applied anatomical interplay between structure and function at various levels
of organization (cellular, tissue, organ, system, and organism).
4. Illustrate the interrelationship of the various organ systems of the human body.
Required Textbook
Applied Human Anatomy Integrated Text and Lab Manual. Custom course pack for the University of
Florida (APK 2100) produced by Pearson Benjamin Cummings. ISBN: 1269320408. You cannot
purchase this course pack on-line b/c it is a custom course pack specifically for this course at UF.
This course pack is required for two reasons: 1) the lab manual images are integrated into the
textbook, and 2) the course pack comes with an access code for MasteringA&P website, which is
where you will complete all of your homework assignments.
General Course Policies
Attendance: Make every effort to attend all lectures and labs. Attendance will be taken in lab only.
Attend the lab section for which you are enrolled, not the one most convenient for you on any given
day. If you have to miss your lab for any reason, please make arrangements with your TA to attend
another lab section that week. If lecture attendance appears to be sluggish, occasional in-class extra
credit pop-quizzes may be administered.
Make-up Exams: Unexcused absences for exams will result in a zero on the exam (this includes
sleeping through your alarm or contacting me AFTER the exam is over if you are ill). If you are ill or
have an emergency that prevents you from taking the exam at the scheduled time, it is your
responsibility to contact the instructor as soon as possible. Documentation of the illness or
emergency will be required. Make-up exams will be given at the discretion of the instructor.
Scheduling make-up exams is the responsibility of the student and should be done—if at all
possible—before the scheduled exam time. If you have a family emergency or death, please contact
the Dean of Students Office (www.dso.ufl.edu) and they will contact your instructor so that you do not
have to provide documentation of the emergency/death in order to get a make-up exam.
Requirements for class attendance and make-up exams, assignments, and other work are consistent
with the university policies that can be found at
https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/regulations/info/attendance.aspx.
Accommodations: Students requesting classroom or other special accommodations must first
register with the Dean of Students Office—Disability Resource Center (www.dso.ufl.edu/drc/). The
Dean of Students Office will provide documentation to the student who must then present the
documentation to the instructor when requesting accommodation. For optimal consideration, you
must see the course instructor within the first three days of class.
Technology: The use of cell phones (and the like) is strictly prohibited during lectures, labs, and
exams. Any cell phone or other electronic device used during an exam will be considered a violation
of the student honor code (i.e., cheating) and will result stiff penalties. Laptop computers are
welcome in class as long as you are using it for class-related work. Surfing the web, checking your
email, making Facebook posts, or anything of that nature is strictly prohibited. Violation of this policy
will result in point deductions at the discretion of the instructor. Please contact the UF Computing
Help Desk and e-Learning Support Services (www.helpdesk.ufl.edu/) if you have any technical issues
with SAKAI or your email.
Communication: You are responsible for checking announcements and course-related postings on
SAKAI. This is how your course instructor will communicate with you throughout the semester.
When emailing the course instructor or your TA in SAKAI, please check the box that sends the email
to the recipient’s UF email address.
Academic Honesty: As a UF student, you have committed yourself to uphold the Honor Code, which
includes the following pledge: “We, the members of the University of Florida community, pledge to
hold ourselves and our peers to the highest standards of honesty and integrity. “ You are expected
to exhibit behavior consistent with this commitment to the UF academic community, and on all work
submitted for credit at UF, the following pledge is either required or implied: "On my honor, I have
neither given nor received unauthorized aid in doing this assignment." It is assumed that you will
complete all work independently in each course unless the instructor provides explicit permission for
you to collaborate on course tasks. Furthermore, as part of your obligation to uphold the Honor
Code, you should report any condition that facilitates academic misconduct. It is your responsibility to
know and comply with all UF policies and procedures regarding academic integrity and the Honor
Code. Violations of the Honor Code will not be tolerated. Violations will be reported to the Dean of
Students Office for consideration of disciplinary action. For more information regarding the Student
Honor Code, please see: http://www.dso.ufl.edu/SCCR/honorcodes/honorcode.php.
Course Examinations and Grading
Use this table to keep track of deadlines, locations, and points earned. It is your responsibility to
ensure that the scores posted in SAKAI are an accurate reflection of what you actually earned in the
course. Discrepancies should be pointed out prior to the last day of classes.

Homework: Assignments will be administered on-line at www.MasteringAandP.com. You will NOT
be permitted to make these assignments up once the due date has passed. The table above outlines
the due dates/times. These are OPEN RESOURCE assignments, so feel free to work in groups and
use the textbook/lecture notes. The textbook will be most helpful in completing these assignments.
Please do NOT post homework questions and answers to the discussion boards. Additionally, I would
avoid using web sites like Wikipedia as resources. The following are specific grading guidelines to
keep in mind as you complete your homework assignments.
 You may open and close an assignment as many times as you wish until you submit or the
due date arrives.
 Once you complete and submit your quiz, you will lose access to it. This means that you
are not able to review it for practice. This is because the homework assignments are NOT
designed to be STUDY material for your exams.
 You are allowed 2 attempts to get the correct answer to multiple choice questions. You are
penalized a small fraction if you miss on the first attempt. You are penalized 100% if you
miss on the second attempt. You are penalized 100% if you miss a T/F question on the
first attempt.
 You are also penalized a small fraction for opening a hint to a question (if one is available).
 Late submissions are not allowed.
Lecture Exams: You must bring a pencil and your Gator1 id card with you to exams. Lecture exams
will consist of 40 questions given over 45 minutes. Lecture exams will NOT be cumulative but you
are expected to retain basic information from previous chapters. The final lecture exam IS
comprehensive.
Lab Exams: The lab exams will consist of 80 questions given in 40 minutes. Lab exams are NOT
cumulative. These will be held on the dates indicated in the table above at multiple times throughout
the day. Sign-up sheets will be available the week before the exam so you can select what time
during the exam days you would prefer to take the exam. If your weekly lab meets on MWF, you
must sign up for a time on the MWF date. If your weekly lab meets on TR, you must sign up for a
time on the TR date. You must get permission to sign up for a different date if there is a conflict.
Extra Credit: No more than 15 points of extra credit can be earned in this course. Extra credit points
are assigned at the discretion of your lab TA. Participation as a subject in an approved research
study is worth 2-5 of the possible 15 lab extra credit points.
Grades: The total points earned from the homework, exams, and extra credit will be summed and
divided by 700. All course grades will be posted in SAKAI. Any discrepancies should be pointed out
to the instructor or TA before the last day of class. There is NO curve for this course and GRADES
WILL NOT BE ROUNDED UP UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE!!! Grades will be assigned according
to the following scale. See the undergraduate catalog web page for information regarding current UF
grading policies: www.registrar.ufl.edu/catalog/policies/regulationgrades.

Getting Help: I recognize that this is an intense course for many
students. In combination with everything else going on in your life,
stress is sure to creep in. If you are totally overwhelmed by the
stresses of your semester and feel like you just can’t handle the
pressure, please come see me and/or someone at UF’s Counseling
and Wellness center (www.counseling.ufl.edu/cwc/). I care so much
for my students’ wellbeing…without you, I would have no one to
teach…and that’s uncool.  Please take care! ~Doc. A
Study Tips for Doc. A’s Class:
1. Read the assigned pages from the text BEFORE you come to lecture. Do not take notes,
underline, highlight, or attempt to memorize anything…JUST READ and enjoy!
2. Snow-ball the lecture notes. Begin studying lecture material immediately after the first lecture.
Then, after the second lecture, begin your studies with day one lecture material. Continue this
all the way up to the exam.
3. Study in groups. Now, before you meet as a group, make sure each individual has put in their
own study time so that as a group you are discussing problems/questions and not simply
reviewing content or definitions (you can do that on your own).
4. Generate practice exam questions. This is particularly helpful within a group. If each member
generates a few questions, you could easily assemble a practice exam to share.
5. Post and answer questions to the discussion board on SAKAI. Doc. A checks these to verify
that student answers are correct and often times uses posts to generate exam questions.
6. Re-write questions. Taking complex questions and breaking them down to identify exactly
what the question is REALLY asking for is very helpful. It is also very helpful to look at
incorrect answer choices and identify what makes those choices wrong. Ask yourself, “How
could I make that statement correct?”
Success Tips for Doc. A’s Class:
1. Do not fall behind. This course moves at a fast pace…and you can easily get overwhelmed if
you procrastinate. Prepare ahead of time for lab and lecture and you’ll do yourself a favor.
2. Stay organized. Keep track of all important due dates for lecture, lab, and the online work.
3. Check SAKAI announcements/emails daily…just pretend it’s facebook, but for school. 
4. Have a positive attitude! Approaching the course with a defeatist attitude will hinder your
learning and your grade…crack a smile now and then.
