Location
• Mission Santa Clara De
Asis is located in Santa
Clara.
• It is on the southern end of
San Francisco.
• The main water source was
an ample supply from
nearby streams.
Introduction
•The founding father is Father Junipero Serra
•The mission was named for Saint Claire of
Assisi, a 13th century Italian nun.
•This mission was the 8th mission of
California.
The Mission
• The layout of the mission is a
traditional quadrangle.
• There are four bells on the bell
tower.
• A tall cross, erected in 1777 and
now in protective casing, stands
across from the church.
Native Americans
• The Native Americans that
lived in this mission were the
Costanoan people.
• The mission’s population was
1,514 people.
• Something interesting about
the Costanoan is that they
spoke eight different
languages
Mission Life
• The livestock they raised
were cattle, sheep, swine,
horses, and mules.
• One crop they grew there
was grain.
• Other than farming they
also had to blacksmith.
Significant Event
•In 1825 there
was a fire that
burned down the
bell tower.
Interesting Facts
• Its main attraction is its well
landscaped grounds, nestled into the
middle of a large university.
• One interesting fact is that the bells
have rung faithfully every evening
since 1798.
• Another interesting fact is that Santa
Clara was the first mission to honor a
female saint.
The Mission Today
• The mission today is an active Catholic Church
of the Roman Catholic Dioces of San Jose.
My Project
• I enjoyed making
my project with my
mom and hope to do
it again next year.
I especially enjoyed
painting the sky
and church.
