FLIGHT OF THE BUTTERFLIES
WELCOME LETTER
Welcome to Dallas and to the inaugural EARTHxFilm Festival, presented by Earth Day
Texas, the largest Earth Day conference and exhibition in the world. We are truly excited
to share visions of a better, cleaner planet through the lens of the camera.
During your visit, we will share with you a slate of over 60 environmentally focused films.
These incredible films were hand chosen to leave a lasting impression and a strengthened
call to action. The films act as a complement to the panels, seminars and exhibitors of
Earth Day Texas.
There are activities and films that will delight those of all ages: like the 3D FLIGHT OF THE
BUTTERFLIES, or screening in the Texas Discovery Garden among the real live butterflies,
the demonstrations of Virtual Reality which bring the future power of film to the here
and now, and the 72 hour film race for young adult filmmakers and various screenings
with live panels, filmmakers and participants in attendance.
We believe that holding Earth Day Texas and EARTHxFilm right here in the Lone Star state
creates a bold statement that will resonate from one U.S. coast to the other and echo
around the world. Whether your interest lies in harnessing natural energy, cleaning up the
oceans or protecting our coral reefs, we hope you will find our selections entertaining,
engaging and inspiring. We invite you to join the conversation, become a hero for change
and make your own impact on our environment.
CHASING CORAL
With the inclusion of film, you will leave Earth Day Texas and the festival impacted by
what you experience, refreshed and renewed by conversations and connections made
and recommitted to making our world a better place.
Thank you for joining us at the first EARTHxFilm Festival. With your help, FILM CAN
CHANGE THE WORLD.
Sincerely,

THE GHOST FLEET (Work in Progress)
Select Clips and Conversation with Jon Bowermaster
USA, 60 min., Color
Southeast Asia supplies a large portion of America’s seafood, but with giant fishing fleets based in
Thailand and Indonesia chronically shorting tens of thousands of fishermen per year, human traffickers
have stepped in. Captives—fishing slaves—are sold from the region to the ship captains for a few
hundred dollars each. Once at sea, the men may never return to land—unless they escape.

NATURE NEEDS HALF: AN IMPACT CAMPAIGN (Presentation)
Join filmmaker and activist James Brundige’s workshop on NATURE NEEDS HALF, a global movement to protect and interconnect half of all the planet’s ecosystems—land and water—for the good of
all life on earth. Why? Because the best science and traditional wisdom show us that existing global
conservation goals are far too low to maintain a healthy and prosperous planet. Brundige and Media
186 are launching a NATURE NEEDS HALF web channel at Earth Day Texas, the first step in a bold,
media-driven initiative to galvanize public audiences, conservation groups, philanthropists and
governments to address the global biodiversity crisis at scale. Using film and social media for strategic

AMOR DE ABUELA - A GRANDMOTHER’S LOVE
1.3 billion people worldwide lack access to electricity. More power from the sun hits the earth in one
hour than humanity uses in an entire year. These stories allow people to step inside a world they

access to reliable power. A Guatemalan family’s life is transformed when their grandmother gains

USA, 2016, 78 min., Color
THE AGE OF CONSEQUENCES investigates the impacts of climate change on increased resource
scarcity, migration and conflict through the lens of US national security and global stability. Through
unflinching case-study analysis, distinguished admirals, generals, and military veterans take us beyond
the headlines of the conflict in Syria, the social unrest of the Arab Spring, the rise of radicalized groups
like ISIS, and the European refugee crisis – and lay bare how climate change stressors interact with
societal tensions, sparking conflict.
In 2016, Connect4Climate launched the Film4Climate Global Video Competition, a trust fund from the
World Bank to communicate climate change. They received more than 860 videos from 155 countries
during a 3-month submission period. Join us for a screening of these Film4Climate Global Video

CHASING CORAL (Documentary Feature)
USA, 2017, 93 min., Color
Coral reefs are the nursery for much of the life in the ocean, a remarkable ecosystem that sustains
us. Yet with carbon emissions warming the seas, a phenomenon called “coral bleaching”—a sign of
mass coral death—has been accelerating around the world, and the public has no idea of the scale or
implication of the catastrophe silently raging underwater. CHASING CORAL taps into the collective
will and wisdom of an ad man, a self-proclaimed coral nerd, top-notch camera designers, and renowned
marine biologists as they invent the first time-lapse camera to record bleaching events as they happen.
Unfortunately, the effort is anything but simple, and the team doggedly battles technical malfunctions
and the force of nature in pursuit of their golden fleece: documenting the indisputable and tragic
transformation below the waves. With breathtaking photography, nail-biting suspense, and startling
emotion, CHASING CORAL is a dramatic revelation that won’t have audiences sitting idle for long.

NATURE’S ORCHESTRA: SOUNDS OF OUR CHANGING PLANET
(Documentary Feature and Workshop)
32 min.
Nature sounds offer important information about the health of today’s wild habitats and the life within
them. NATURE’S ORCHESTRA follows Bernie Krause on a soundscape expedition in the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge. To record habitats that are neither disturbed nor destroyed by human activities,
nature sound recordists have to travel far. Along with animal voices, including migratory bird songs,
the barking of a fox, and a grizzly’s sniff, the expedition records the melting of permafrost and other
evidence of climate change. Traveling across the planet to every continent since the late 1960s, noted
musician and soundscape ecologist Dr. Bernie Krause has recorded more than 15,000 species – marine
and terrestrial. Over half of the soundscapes Krause has recorded are now silent or can no longer be

RACING EXTINCTION (Documentary Feature)
USA, 2015, 94 min., Color
Louie Psihoyos’s THE COVE exposed viewers to the brutal practice of dolphin slaughter. The Academy
Award-winning director now bears witness to a global problem: mankind’s role in precipitating mass
extinction, potentially resulting in the loss of half of the world’s species. Psihoyos joins forces with
activists, scientists, nature photographers, and cutting-edge inventors to draw attention to the dangers
we face. While covert operations reveal the horrific black-market trade in endangered aquatic species,
the film’s broader lens uncovers the even more disastrous consequences of human activity, chiefly
the release of ocean-killing methane and carbon from energy consumption. With stakes as high as
the survival of life on the planet, RACING EXTINCTION is an urgent, affirming call to action to stem
the tide before it’s too late.
