Grammar Transparency Routine
1. Define the skill explicitly. (For example, say “A noun is a naming word. It
names a person, place, or thing. Examples include boy, school, and
chair.”)
2. Provide clear examples. Use concrete examples or actions, where
appropriate. (For example, point to a chair and say “A chair is a thing. The
word chair is a noun, or naming word, since it names a thing.”)
3. Do the first two items with students, then assign the remaining
items. Work with English Learners and Approaching Level students to
complete all the items while the other students work independently or with
partners.
4. Review the answers and provide corrective feedback. Make sure
students self-correct their papers.
5. Have students reread the sentences to a partner to develop fluency.
This also provides valuable oral/speaking practice for English Learners.
6. Connect to writing. (For example, have students make a list of nouns
and use them to write a sentence or circle all the nouns in a story recently
written.)
NOTE: Answers to all exercises can be found in the Teacher’s Editions
