Stair Climb Challenge raises funds for LSCH Renewal
Thanks to the more than 100 climbers and volunteers who participated in
the 3rd Annual LutherCare Foundation
Stair Climb Challenge at Luther Tower
in Saskatoon on February 13. By soliciting pledges from their friends and
family, the climbers raised more than
$18,000 for the Renewal of Luther Special Care Home!
the many other businesses that donated
merchandise for the prize table.
The next phase of the ongoing Luther
Special Care Home Renewal will be
to remodel the 1st floor kitchen as an
open, welcoming, non-institutional
space that will serve as the “heart of
the home.” A similar redesign of the
kitchen on 2nd floor was completed
in 2012. The open design will enhance
communication between staff and residents. A self-serve refreshment bar will
allow residents and visitors to help
themselves to snacks and beverages
throughout the day.

Fifteen relay teams and two solo climbers made their way from the main floor
to the beautiful 22nd floor dining room
of Luther Tower. More than 30 volunteers – many of them Luther Tower residents – helped to make sure the event
ran smoothly and safely.

instead of being transferred to hospital.

Spiritual Care Corner
Faith active in love “Behold, from faith thus flow forth love
and joy in the Lord, and from love a joyful, willing and free mind that serves
one’s neighbor willingly.”
- Martin Luther
Our story as LCC began with a lively
faith in a loving and gracious God. In
March of 1955, the Lutheran Sunset
Home opened its doors to the first of
58 residents. The first “superintendent”
was Pastor Knut Bergsagel and the first
“matron” was Sister Marie Weiks. From
the beginning, they understood the
home as “a practical expression of our
Christian faith in the care of the aged
and infirm.” Caring for older adults
was a tangible expression of what Saint
Paul described as “faith active in love”
(Galatians 5:6).
In Pastor Bergsagel’s January 1955 report to the board he writes, “those who
are admitted to the home will receive…
blessings not easily evaluated in dollars and cents.” Residents were chosen
by Rev. Renita Falkenstern
on the basis of “their personal character” and not on the basis of religious
denomination. Christian hospitality
meant welcoming those in need rather
than those who shared the same creed.
In terms of staffing, he stressed the
need for “workers interested in human
beings, who have special awareness of
needs and capabilities of old people,
unlimited patience, a sense of humour,
good health, and an abundance of energy.” If the home was to be “blessing” to
residents, it needed to be a place where
residents felt welcomed as members of
a large family. And most important of
all, staff needed to be kind and caring.
Many of the first residents were essentially independent. Some residents
carried their own suitcases when they
moved into the Home, made their
own beds and helped clear the dishes.
However, it quickly became apparent
that the need for higher level of care
would soon become necessary as residents aged and became more frail. The
leadership was committed to finding
new ways to continue caring for the
residents. One expansion followed after another. Soon other housing projects, group homes, intermediate care
homes, family housing and day programs would follow, including facilities
in Outlook and Estevan.
Today, we seek to carry on the tradition
of meeting needs and caring for people. The response to those needs may
come in many forms, but at the centre
of that response will always be a faithbased, caring community – a place of
belonging through which people may
be blessed. We do this not because we
have to, but as a practical expression of
our “faith active in love.”
