July 2012 Happy Birthday Cambridge Library! It will be party time at the library next week when 10th birthday celebrations will see staff sharing birthday cake with library visitors on Monday, 16 July. Opened to the public on 15 July 2002, together with The Boulevard Centre, the last 10 years has seen significant change in the way people use and access the library and its services. When first opened the library focused largely on providing a traditional lending service and basic online services. Today, with technology advancing at an ever increasing speed, services offered at the library have developed to include not only the traditional but also a range of online options. The last 10 years has seen the library go from loaning book audio cassettes to more recently book audio CDs and these days the library offers its members downloadable e-audio books! And, moving with the times, Cambridge Library has a Facebook page and a Twitter account. Not to be outdone, the traditional lending service is still extremely popular. The library boasts some 56,000 items in its collection, clocks up about 400,000 visits each year and has loaned nearly 3 million items over the past 10 years. With a new website set to launch in the next couple of weeks Cambridge Library has come a long way in a short time! »»To keep in touch with everything going on at the library visit www. library.cambridge. wa.gov.au Library Services Manager Nerida Clifford (second from right) and her Library Services team looking forward to 10th birthday celebrations. Cambridge Coastcare makes swell progress The 2012 planting program by Cambridge Coastcare is almost complete thanks to good early rains and the efforts of a dedicated team of volunteers. The planting schedule was completed in late June, the earliest completion in many years. This is great news for the plants as early winter planting gives the best opportunity for good root growth and in turn increases the chances of long-term survival. This year Cambridge Coastcare planted nearly 8000 plants of 18 species, across four sites within the coastal dunes of the Town. Of the 18 species, six have rarely, if ever, been planted before - a great outcome for increasing the biodiversity of our coastal dunes. Although planting is almost complete, there are still plenty of activities planned for the group over the winter months, including the continuation of the woody weeding program, general site maintenance and monitoring of restoration sites. »»If you’d like to become a Cambridge Coastcare volunteer and lend a hand in restoring and maintaining the coastal dunes in Cambridge visit www.cambridgecoast care.com.au Confused about what goes in what bin? To make things easy Cambridge has introduced bins with different coloured lids - the lid colour representing the type of waste that can be put in the bin - Yellow for recycling, Green for green waste and Red for general household rubbish. The Yellow lidded recycling bin is where you dispose of paper, cardboard, plastics, metal and glass. These bins are available as a 240L Win Bin or a 360L Sumo bin, both at no cost. The 240L Green Waste bin has a green lid and is the place for grass clippings, weeds, leaves, twigs and garden refuse including rose cuttings, small branches and raw timber cut-offs. And the red lidded bin is for general household waste, being items that can’t be recycled and aren’t hazardous, such as food scraps or disposable nappies. These bins are available as a 120L Thin Bin or a 240L Sin Bin. The green or brown lids of older 240L general household waste bins will be replaced with a red lid over the coming year. Twice yearly bulk verge collections carried out by the Town are the ideal time to get rid of bigger items such as furniture and bulk garden waste. Hazardous household waste should be taken to the Brockway Transfer Station for safe disposal. »»Visit www.cambridge. wa.gov.au/waste for information on all waste services or contact 9347 6000.
