Room at the Inn Volunteers Prayer List Pastor's PAX Ponderings In our Christian tradition we have this amazing sacrament called Holy Communion or the Eucharist. Eucharist comes from the Greek word meaning “to give thanks.” Christians are thankful for the sacrificial love of Christ which offers salvation to the entire world. 11 Please note that there will be an Ecumenical Thanksgiving Worship Service 7pm on Monday, November 21 at the Hope Connection, 927 W. There is training available on Nov. 3,16 at the Warming Center, 447 W. Washington. www.roomattheinn.org Two ways to Feed the Local Hungry 1) First Sunday of every Month is “Food Pantry Sunday” 2) Money in “soup cans”—Bring to church We ask that you continue to bring non-perishable food items for our food pantry ministry. Drop these items off on the shelves in the YAFA room. November 6th is our “Food Pantry Sunday”. Forrest Libby will continue to deliver these items to the Salvation Army. Thanks Forrest! Another great way to help is saving your coins and small cash in “soup cans” for Feeding America. These cans will then be available for our members to take home. Everyday you could throw your loose change into the can. All monies collected go directly to Feeding America for local hunger needs. Our 5 Year Strategic Goals 1) Encourage all members to attend worship services 2) Follow up with new members 3) Support our youth fellowship program for elementary through high school students utilizing college-age students. One day someone reminded her of an offense that another person had committed against her. “Don’t you remember?” the friend pressed. “No,” Barton replied. “I distinctly remember forgetting that.” Forgiving and forgetting are not precisely the same. While God declares that he’ll “remember [our] sin no more” (Jeremiah 31:34), it’s tough for humans to completely for- Thou hast given so much to me, get harm done to us, even when we want to forgive. Give one thing more — a grateful On the other hand, like Barton, we can consciously choose not to ruminate on an offense, as a cow does its cud. We can opt not to bring up past hurts during present disagreements, and we can intentionally not recount someone’s sin to a third party, hoping they’ll take our side. In the process of “choosing to forget” the wrong done to us, surely we’ll also find it easier to forgive. heart; Not thankful when it pleaseth me, As if thy blessings had spare days, But such a heart whose pulse may be thy praise. —George Herbert The Long View of Advent Advent is about preparing not only for Christmas but also for Jesus’ return. According to Scripture, that won’t be the calm, silent scene described in Christmas carols. In 1928, Dietrich Bonhoeffer preached: “It is very remarkable that we face the thought that God is coming so calmly, whereas previously peoples trembled at the day of God …. We have become so accustomed to the idea of divine love and of God’s coming at Christmas that we no longer feel the shiver of fear that God’s coming should arouse in us. We … [forget] the serious aspect, that the God of the world draws near to the people of our little earth and lays claim to us.” God is love; we’ll be in good hands at the end of time. But during Advent, also be in awe of God. Embrace a reverent fear of the Lord that reminds you how profound it is that God chooses again and again to draw near and lay claim to you. Advent begins Nov 27 We will have “Hanging of the Greens” after worship, followed by a potluck. Nov 30 and Dec 7 will be 6pm Soup and 7pm Advent Worship. At the time, the Thirty Years’ War was ravaging central Europe, claiming millions of lives. Rinkart served as pastor in Eilenburg, a walled town that became a crowded refuge for starving fugitives. Although Rinkart was struggling to provide for his own family, he opened his own home to people in need. After the plague entered Eilenburg, Rinkart conducted up to 50 funerals a day — including services for his wife and the only other two pastors in town. Amid the despair, he wrote many hymns, including “Now Thank We All Our God.” Originally intended as a table prayer, it’s now sung at Thanksgiving to remember God’s “countless gifts of love” — even during hardships. The Meaning of Life The greatest thing is to give thanks for everything. He who has learned this knows what it means to live. He has penetrated the whole mystery of life: giving thanks for everything. —Albert Schweitzer Fueled by thankfulness Thankfulness is not a minor virtue. It is not one of the elementary virtues [that] may be left behind as we become more mature. I believe that thankfulness is essential to the strength of every virtue, and that without it every other branch is starved and lean. Life without thankfulness is devoid of love and passion. Hope without thankfulness is lacking in fine perception. Faith without thankfulness lacks strength and fortitude. Every virtue divorced from thankfulness is maimed and limps along the spiritual road. —John Henry Jowett COMMITMENT SUNDAY AND THANK YOU BRUNCH Sunday Nov. 13 has been designated as “Commitment Sunday”. We ask that you respond to the call to support the Lord’s ministries through Prince of Peace by handing in your Commitment Cards and Time & Talent Sheets that day. Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl's memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of others he treated later in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.
