Shakespeare in the Classroom with Shakespeare’s Globe Professional Development COURSE INFORMATION Course Aims Venue, Date and Cost This one day professional development activity is aimed at secondary school teachers wishing to enhance their knowledge of using Shakespeare’s work in a classroom setting. Royal Conservatoire of Scotland 100 Renfrew Street, Glasgow G2 2DB A specialist practitioner from Shakespeare’s Globe in London will lead the session where teachers will take part in active, practical techniques designed to assist their teaching practice in this specialist area. The intensive workshops has been devised and developed in the rehearsal room and will inform classroom practice for Scottish teachers. By the end of the short course, teachers should have: • • • • developed an understanding of how Shakespeare’s use of language helps us to interpret his plays in performance explored how Shakespeare uses and adapts character in his plays to construct meaning examined how form and rhythm help an audience to gain a deeper insight of the play developed awareness of how the physicality of the theatre space informs our insight into Shakespeare’s work Friday 4 November 11am to 5pm £90 Course Content Throughout the short course teachers will be supported by Shakespeare’s Globe’s educational specialist who has developed dynamic learning approaches to exploring Shakepeare’s plays with 11 to 17 year olds. Their approach to supporting teachers will in turn aid secondary pupils to better understand characterization, themes and language. Shakespeare’s Globe use a variety of techniques to explore and experiment with text; from the actor’s viewpoint and from the director’s, differing interpretations of the same play and interactive tasks to bring the text to life. A short but specific focus of the day will be on Twelfth Night and Romeo and Juliet. Additional Information Course Leader The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Globe Education is the largest theatre education department in the UK. For one month of their study year our post-graduate students are resident at Shakespeare’s Globe in an immersive, in context experience of Shakespeare and his works. Student Preparation Teachers should wear loose and comfortable clothes and bring water as some of the work will be practical and active. Please do bring a pad and pen in order to take notes throughout the session.
