3.
Copper porphyry potential
The Luang Namtha project area lies along a strong mineralised
geological trend which hosts a number of significant porphyry
mineral occurrences in China, Laos and Thailand.
Sumiko Resources Exploration and Development Co., consultants to JOGMEC
2012/3 made the following observations about the porphyry potential at Pakieng:
“…The Luang Namtha project is located along the ‘Sukhothai (Malaya) fold belt, a
mineralised structure which hosts numerous significant mineral deposits.
Ore deposits along this belt are tectonically and metallogenetically controlled and
include the Yulong copper mine, in Chibet province, China, which has reserves of
650 million tonnes, grading 1% Cu and 0.03% Mo.
The same type of ore deposits as Yulong copper deposit are expected to be
discovered in the Luang Namtha area”.

Lao PDR - investment climate

Excellent mineral potential:
− Virtually unexplored
− Two large producing copper-gold mines (Sepon, Phu Kam)

Market economy: mining and hydropower are the growth industries

Developing infrastructure:
− Logistical access to China (via the Mekong river, barge), Thailand,
Vietnam and Myanmar
− Smelter facilities near Kunming, China

Stable mining regime:
− 100% foreign ownership permitted
− Modern (international standard) Mining Act
− Moratorium on new licenses in effect: benefits Amanta presence
− Amanta has excellent relations with the government agencies
