MBBC NEWSLETTER Newsletter Newsletter No. No. 33 08 –– 30 20October, March, 2007 2007 A Future Focus Last Thursday I attended a dinner to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the school I attended. During the course of the evening we were reminded of the achievements of various old boys’ such as Edmund Barton and Banjo Patterson. The focus was very much on the past and there was much to celebrate. I contrasted that with attending our art show the following evening and our information evening last night – and reflected that we are a school focused on the future and what a great joy and privilege that is. Each day I see boys full of potential who may be or future politicians or famous poets, but more importantly who will hopefully be great men in terms of their families, values, friends and society in general, whatever they do. When MBBC is celebrating its 150th, (an event I am unlikely to be attending!) or even its 50th, I have no doubt there will be much to celebrate in the achievements of our boys’. Annual ‘State of the Union’ Parent Information Meeting It was pleasing to see so many parents at last night’s parent information evening. Professor Stephen Gray, Chairman of the MBBC Board and I presented an update on the College’s plans for 2008. The presentation form the meeting can be found on the website under the Downloads section. Strategic Plan MBBC’s Strategic Plan was released last night. A copy will be sent home today to each family via your son. Please check his bag! The Strategic Plan outlines goals and strategies for the College in 5 areas – Students, Staff, Community, Assets and Leadership. It can also be downloaded from the website. Student Art Show 'Imagination is more important than knowledge!' – Einstein Congratulations to Ms de Lange for the wonderful art exhibition last Friday. It was a fantastic example of the wonderful creative talents of so many boys and I congratulate all boys on their efforts. The standard of work and the level of creativity were quite remarkable and reminded me again of the need to give boys as many opportunities as possible to explore their creative talents and so become a well rounded young man. Sadly too often boys do not fulfil their creative potential leaving an imbalance in their lives. Thank you too, to the Year 3-5 parents for their excellent catering efforts. Year 7-9 Camp All middle school boys and staff will be on Moreton Island next week for their annual camp. Congratulations to James Ogilvie and Joshua Kelliher who were selected to attend the Jason Conference for creative learners in Sydney this week. Bandanna Day Another successful Bandanna Day has been completed. We managed to raise well over $500 for Canteen. Well done to all who purchased a Bandanna Day and to those who invented new ways of wearing them. 2 CHAPLAINS CORNER ‘These three remain, faith, hope, love and the greatest of these is love’ 1 Corinthians 13:13 Two weeks ago I discussed the issue of faith. This newsletter I want to look at hope. Hope is a very valuable commodity, as are all three of the attributes mentioned in this very short but powerful verse from the bible. If we look at the dictionary again it describes hope in this manner: 1. 2. 3. To wish for something with expectation of its fulfillment. To have confidence; trust. To look forward to with confidence or expectation We all live a life of hope every day. It is what keeps us getting out of bed each morning. We hope for a better future for our kids, we hope for a better day for ourselves. We wake hoping that today will be better than yesterday. Think about why New Years Eve is so important and so celebrated. Really it is just another day on the calendar with the same amount of minutes and hours. But there is something about that change to a new year that seems to bring us to life, because we have the belief or the hope that this year will be better than last year. Hope is so vitally important to live a happy and contented life, especially for the youth of society. Sadly once we lose hope, depression and despair will quickly set in. To give up hope is to stop living. Our alarming suicide rates are testimonies to this. So what do we do? Having faith offers us hope. The bible tells us that the one who made us wants to give us a future and a hope; this is His plan for us. To wake up each morning knowing you are not an accident, or a mistake, or worthless. Rather knowing that there is reason and meaning to your life, this is the hope that God gives us when we place our faith in him. Shane McCarthy School Chaplain Announcement: Do you know what a youth group is? Have you ever been to a youth group event? Youth groups are often run by church groups and are a safe place for young people to have fun and mix with other young people. They might have some serious events but they also have group nights of Ice-skating; Ten-pin owling or Laserforce nights just to name a few. If you are in Grades 7-9 and would like more information about the local youth groups and what they do then see Mr. McCarthy to pick up a brochure with the details. Rotary Public Speaking Competition Last Tuesday, Kyle McCann and Thomas Thorne (Year 6) represented the College at the Rotary Public Speaking Competition. The boys’ prepared and presented a 3-minute speech to a panel of adjudicators and an audience of student representatives from around the district. Kyle’s speech on the negative influence of television was well received. He mounted a persuasive argument that included social, personal and environmental reasons for children to limit their time watching TV. Thomas employed his fine acting skills using a mobile phone prop to illustrate his speech on the over-use of mobile phones. He amused the audience with the common SMS terms of ‘lol, brb and ttfn’ as well as the newly crafted text vocabulary of ‘frothin, floordrobe and multislacking’ (if you don’t know what these terms mean, find a teenager to explain them to you!). Congratulations to both boys’! Family Planning Queensland – Sexuality Education for Years 5 and 6 Just a reminder that these sessions began today and will continue for the next two Tuesdays for Year 6 and for one more Tuesday with the Year 5s. Art Show The artistic efforts of our students were proudly showcased at the 2007 MBBC Artshow. Special thanks go to our fabulous parent helpers: Lynette Schlobohm, Caroline and Judith Fogg, Caroline Martin, Elizabeth Scanlan, Allison Matterson, Melissa Kersten, Beth Doig, Hayley Finnis and Cheryl Kutschkin. Thanks also to the staff helpers Mr Schinkle, Mrs Vincent, Mrs Wyatt, Mrs Bowden, Mrs Givney, Mrs Youngman, Todd and Mrs Clarke. The contibutions the staff made to the event were greatly appreciated. Our last thankyou goes to the boys’ for their amazing ideas and committment to creating original and exciting artworks. Well done! 3 Eagle Award Thanks to Dr Crouch for judging the Eagle Award. Once again this was a very difficult task, requiring much deliberation. The winners were Angus Barker (Year 3), for his portrait of Mrs Patchett and Hamish Freer (Prep) for his portrait of Mrs Clarke. The boys’ won Gift Vouchers and some arty books and treats.
