SEPTEMBER Spring Newsletter 2016 P O Box 62 589 Greenlane Ak.1546 www.nzchinese-akld.org.nz 1 on johns mind Have we seen the last of Winter ? Well the daffodils have bloomed in Cornwall Park in a haze of beautiful yellow, signs of spring or maybe it is a little premature ? I have also noticed the magnolias and cherry trees blooming and pretty soon to say the least the days will warm up a little and make it more enjoyable to stroll in the park. We drove down to Matamata and spent a day visiting Hobitton and was greeted with a lovely sunny day then off to Waitomo where Connie had booked 2 nights accommodation. Since the last issue a lot has happened but strangely enough I am having some trouble recollecting what did happen. Do you have the same problem ? sometimes I can’t even remember what day it is let alone what has happened since the May Newsletter ! BTW are you glad that the Olympics in Rio has finished? Great to see that NZ featured on the medals table with a record number of medals- 18 in total - but I feel there is still some disappointment in the air, guess that goes with the unexpected in sports. Last month son Quentin and Grand daughter Reina came back from Kagoshima Japan to spend 2 weeks with us and also to catch up with his many friends and cousins The following day we backtracked to the Waimangu Volcanic valley ,near Rotorua I forgot to mention that the previous night whilst driving back from Rotorua the fan-belt of my not so trusty deed snapped but we managed to get back to the motel. Next morning the SUV was taken to Otorohonga for servicing. So replaced with a courtesy car I drove back to Waitomo to pick up the other 3 passengers and continued the trip to the Waitomo Glow-worm Caves. After lunch we headed off to the Otorohonga Kiwi House , where we filled our time in before collecting my Hyundai Terracan – fan belt replaced and fixed ready to drive back to Auckland – HOME. 2 Chairmans message Hi all I hope that everyone has survived the mild winter months and with the warmer weather now on the horizon. A nice morning wake up call to catch the plane down to Wellington, which would be the * setting for a lot of Chinese people in one place to discuss some serious business. And eat. Despite having been involved with NZCA since 2013 as a delegate at LDC, and now to attend the AGM as the CoChair, I really had no idea what was in store for me at the AGM. More experienced attendees informed me that I would learn a bit more about how the historic organisation is run, discover all the different facets of the organisations including the ongoing projects and activities, and above all – the delicious, delicious I got all of the above, and more! The highlight for me though, despite how much I seem to be writing about it already, wasn’t the food. It was getting to hear all about what NZCA was doing throughout New Zealand such as as laying wreaths at ANZAC Day and celebrating Chinese New Year at Parliament. The guest speakers provided interesting perspectives on the varied ways in which an organisation like NZCA is and can be an important resource and source of support. The Chinese Deputy Ambassador emphasising the need to provide information and services for new immigrants. The City Councillor promoting cross-cultural relations and enhancing cultural and linguistic familiarity among New Zealanders through Chinese Language Week. The SS Ventnor project advocating for the protection of the final resting place of those who perished in the wreck. The brilliant and wonderful Wellington Chinese Garden Project creating a living space that encapsulates and shares the Chinese culture. All these projects and passions emphasising and paying testament to the far reaches and influences of NZCA. The AGM was a great experience for me, with the passion that others had for retaining and promoting the Chinese culture and heritage in New Zealand. I felt honoured being privy to the ongoings of the organisation and what it has achieved so far and is continuing to achieve nationwide. It was definitely worth the 4am wake up call! Thank you to the Auckland Branch for sponsoring my flights and accommodation, and thank you again to NZCA for your generous donation and continued support to LDC. Ku Bailey, of Te Aupouri and Irish descent, is a specialist in quilting, fibre art, painting, flax weaving, and jewellery design. Ku’s dyslexia, only diagnosed in her thirties, meant she embraced the visual arts with enthusiasm and relief, rather than academia. Her Irish grandmother taught her needlecraft; embroidering, quilting, knitting and other handcrafts. Experience in the textile world, and as Maori arts educator and specialist, have further informed her approach. (Bio from Corbans Estate Arts Centre) On Saturday 18 June 2016 Ant Sang gave a talk and power point slide show about how he started making comics, his graphic novels (Dharma Punks and Shaolin Burning) and working on the television show bro’Town and the animated short film Wing Chun which he is currently working on. Ant showed some of the process involved in making comics and animation and also talk about some of the research into Chinese history for Shaolin Burning and Wing Chun. Georgia was recently invaded by Russia and a third of the country is still under Russian occupation. It is very poor and its main source of income is tourism from Russia! Georgians follow the Orthodox faith. Armenia was the first Christian country in the world. The symbol of Armenia is Mount Ararat (where Moses landed after the flood) which is temporarily not in Armenia. Armenia is Apostolic and whilst Patrick & Colleen were there, Pope Francis came to do homage to Armenia. Patrick described where they went, what they saw and, most importantly, what they ate. 9 Tangible Goals and Objectives for this Program Apply Chinese Language in their daily lives by Understanding spoken Chinese Pronouncing people’s names and place names Expressing simple greetings and farewells and useful phrases Communicating their needs, feelings and ideas clearly and with confidence in spoken Chinese ( Cantonese) The best time to learn a language is between the ages of three to seven. It was our first adventure into the mainstream – and we were received in a very positive manner. Over 500 people came though on Saturday and 350 on Sunday, so the exposure was great. Many people stopped by, to admire the books on display. Of interest was the NZCA’s publication Chinese ANZACS and Helene Wong’s book Being Chinese. A few copies of Har Gee Chans in New Zealand were sold – surprisingly, to non Chinese. The old Chinese connections to New Zealand towns are proving vital to completing their history. People with Maori-Chinese ancestry, Fijian-Chinese and Samoan-Chinese, and Vietnamese, stopped by to talk and discuss their heritage, and how they could go about researching further. Dick Eastman has been involved in genealogy for more than 35 years, was a presenter over the weekend. He noted on his blog: “I was also impressed with the exhibits and presentations on other minorities, including researching ancestry in India, China, Fiji, and elsewhere.” To purchase: Chinese ANZACS, https://www.nzchinese.org.nz/news/latest-news/chinese-anzacs-now-available/ Being Chinese http://cart.bwb.co.nz/products/being-chinese?variant=16739477316 11 Ching Ming April 8, 9,10th 2017 Wandering with Ancestors In 1902 the SS Ventnor sank 10 miles off the coast of the Hokianga Harbour. On board were at least 499 bone coffins boxes of men who had died in NZ, and were returning home. Imagine their wives and children who mourned for them. It is this tragedy that forms the foundation of a part of Chinese NZ history that we are recognising and celebrating on April 8,9,10th 2017. I’m from a Chinese settler family, and it has always been clan focussed, but today in 2016, we need to move beyond that, for this story moves beyond the Poon Fah Assn, and Poon Yue clan, beyond the Tung Jung Assn to be meaningful to all NZ Chinese residing in NZ. Experience has told us, that those who have come on other trips to date, find that this trail has allowed the individual to develop a sense of the collective, of being Chinese in NZ. You could as well…. This is an occasion, never to be repeated. It is a National celebration. The Chinese were buried from Auckland to Riverton, and were on the ship destined to return home. After 10 years of negotiation, making networks and relationships we are now ready to launch Wandering with Ancestors, the first of the trails that will be launched by Northland Inc. (Tourism enterprise for the Far North). Our Chinese community is indeed lucky, with so many people with so many skills. Virginia Chong and Connie Kum have taken on the organisation of this trip. Yes, you can come for one day, two days or the whole lot, being 3 days. Those of your who have an imagination will see that we have a task ahead. Who would be interested ? Who wants 1,2,or 3 days. Who wants to be at the elaborate launch? Who wants to go out to Kawerua (special permission required) where we know coffins where floated into the harbour and then re-buried? Who wants to go to Mitimiti to see the exquisite RED gateway, and celebrate the Chinese/Maori connection of our story, and then give thanks for the history as we have found to date, in Rawene cemetery. If you are not curious then this is not the trip for you, but if you want to understand more of Chinese New Zealand history, and support Chinese New Zealand history, then I suggest you stand up and celebrate who we are in this land, and come along and celebrate with us. This is your moment. Bring your family, bring your friends, get on our buses, let us help you with accommodation in a place where its off the radar of expedia, and become a part of who we are after all these generations. Become proud of our contribution and the history we have made in New Zealand. Let us turn a tragedy into a celebration that everyone can recognise, be there to witness, coz folks, if you are not there, nuffin’ happenin’. It’s next year or never. Contact Virginia; E. [email protected] .or Connie; E: [email protected] ….. with expressions of interest. See you up north. I am not kidding when I say, its like no other part of New Zealand. Wong Every three years the local body elections provide the electorates an opportunity to select a new mayor, councillors and local boards. This year–NZCA Auckland deputy chair David Wong is putting his name forward for the local community board in Orakei (which covers St Heliers, Mission Bay, Remuera, Ellerslie, Orakei, Glendowie, and Meadowbank). Mid-Autumn Dinner was held at the Lucky Fortune Restaurant on 13th August. Once again this event was patronized by our many loyal members and friends. Over 200 guests was provided with a banquet of mouth- watering dishes which was well received and consumed in great spirit by all. David is both active in Auckland Chinese Community Centre and Rotary and is a great believer in working hard for the community and our future generations. If you live in this ward – please cast your vote for David – to ensure a NZ Chinese representation, and more ethnic diversity in our local boards. ********************* 16 No matter how good or bad you think life is, Wake up each day and be ---- Thankful for life.
