February was Black History Month. In 1926,
Carter G Woodson began the movement for
Negro History Week. Since then it evolved
into Black History month, beginning in
1976. Here are a few facts about some
important figures in Black History:

John Grisham
by Tim
The author I have chosen for this
month is John Grisham. John Ray
Grisham was born on February 8,
1955 in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
Before becoming a novelist he was a
lawyer. He is happily married with
two wonderful children. Many of his
books have been turned into films;
some of his notable works I have
watched on television include The
Firm, The Client, and the Pelican
Brief. Grisham was also a Galaxy
British Book award winner for having
over 2 million copies sold in a single
book printing. Only two others were
able to accomplish this amazing
feat, JK Rowling and Tom Clancy. I,
like you my fellow readers, would like
someday to sit down and read one of
John Grisham’s novels, having only
experienced some of them myself
from the prospective of television. I
do hope that one day soon I will have
the opportunity to read one of them.

Movie Review — by Ileene
“Hachi: A Dog’s Tale” and “Awakenings”
I recently saw two movies on DVD, one is
called “Hachi” and the other, “Awakenings”.
First, “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale” (2009) starts out
with the a puppy from Japan who was sent to
someone on a train, but when his cage is
being taken off the train somehow it falls and
the cage breaks. The puppy escapes and he
also loses his tag telling to who he belongs.
The puppy runs around the train station until
he meets a man, Parker Wilson (who is
played by Richard Gere). At first, Wilson tried
to find a home for the puppy, but he decided
to keep the puppy in spite of his wife not
wanting it and they named it Hachi. Hachi
became mans best friend to Parker. Next,
“Awakenings” (1990) is about a doctor,
played by Robin Williams, who works at
mental hospital and becomes interested
catatonic patients. He tries a drug named
dopamine, usually used for patients with
Parkinson’s Disease, to see if the catatonic
patients could come out of their state. The
first catatonic patient, played by Robert
DeNiro, turns normal with the dopamine, but
only for a while. I highly recommend these
two movies, but make sure you bring a
hanky! Also, “Hachi” is rated G, but
“Awakenings” is rated PG-13.

were pretty good this year. Well,
except for the songs that had words
bleeped out due to swearing. There
were quite a few of those. The
Lifetime Achievement Awards went
to Julie Andrews, Roy Haynes, the
Julliard String Quartet, the Kingston
Trio, Dolly Parton, The Ramones,
and George Beverly Shea. I hope
you enjoyed this report see you
soon!
Last Friday I had the opportunity to go on an
outing with some of my fellow clients. We went
bowling at Freeway Lanes in Wickliffe. Even
though I wasn’t able to bowl on my own (the
ramp leading to the lanes was too small and I
wasn’t able to get up there) I still had a good
time because I enjoy getting out in the
community. The people there were really nice.
My staff, Annie, bowled for me which I greatly
appreciated. We were gone so long that when
we got back to UCP it was time to eat and get
ready for buses. I would like to go bowling again,
but maybe next time to another bowling alley
that is more accessible so I can see how I would
do on my own.
