Trust in God still, and trust in me’ John 14:1 I woke one morning to a grey day, scudding clouds and rain and high winds. From my bed, through the window I saw a gull riding the storm, using the strong southerly to rise ever higher and higher, it’s wings white against the dark sky. I marvelled at the power in that bird, the strength in those delicate feathers, the way it used the strong currents to soar ever upwards. I thought of us and the storms of life and how we can just cower beneath them, hiding away from them and never even getting off the ground. Or we can use them, with God’s help, to soar ever higher towards Him through the clouds of unknowing. In Romans Paul says that God works for good in all things, and in the great storms of life if we will only call on God, He will take us soaring ever upwards riding the wind on the currents of His mighty power to come closer to him. We will know the exhilaration of that gull in the wind and storm using it to carry us ever nearer to our God, an exhilaration and joy we would never have known if we had stayed hiding from the storm, cowering in shelter on the ground. Help us, Lord, to face the storms of life head on, to call on You for Your strength and to use the strong winds that buffet us, to fly ever upwards to You.
