Many of you have been admiring Ed’s amazing photo of a Hawk, which has been on display at the Center. The Bald Eagle is also one of his photos. Mr. Soderberg has traveled extensively to photograph birds, many from Wolfe Park. His art work has been exhibited by the Fort Lauderdale, Florida Art Guild where his painted bunting received the guild’s silver medal. His photographs have been published by the N.Y. Times and the Connecticut Audubon Society. Yellowstone National Park Arthur Gottlieb, on Tuesday, May 9th at 1:00 pm will be speaking about Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone features dramatic canyons, alpine rivers, lush forests, hot springs and gushing geysers, including its most famous, Old Faithful. Thank You! Calling All Members Center Members and guests are invited to participate in an important discussion on Wednesday, May 17th at 2:00 pm. The survey results are tabulated and the staff would like to share the findings. Budget adjustments will need to be made in the next fiscal year, which our members need to be aware of. In addition, the staff has been revising our goals and strategic plan and would like your input. The Member’s Advisory Council will be adding sub-committees to facilitate staff efforts to plan for today and the future. Member’s Advisory Council Members of the Center are invited to attend the Advisory Council meeting on Thursday, May 18th at 1:30 pm. The Advisory Council supports Center operations and provides valuable input. The Council will be forming four (4) new committees: Programs, Fundraising, Volunteers and Membership & Hospitality. Suggestions are always welcome. I’m Walking It’s spring, time to be outside and start walking. In addition to our Wednesday morning TRIAD walking program at Great Hollow Lake, the Center is issuing a challenge to everyone. We are walking across the country. First stop is New York City, on to Chicago, a stop in Denver till we arrive in San Francisco. A total of 3,123 miles. Our journey will begin at the Center on Wednesday, May 10th at 2:00 pm. The first 50 walkers registered will receive a pedometer. Every Wednesday morning, enter your miles and plot your progress on the map. The first person to reach each destination will receive a gift as well as the second and third. Anyone can participate, just walk your normal day. Generally, 2,000 steps is equal to one mile. Nutrition Workshop - Make A Change The Connecticut Department of Public Health and University of St. Joseph are offering a free nutrition workshop on Monday, May 8th at 1:00 pm. The program is specifically tailored for those receiving SNAP benefits. Session may include recipes, food tastings and prizes. Advanced registration is required and can be made at the Center. If you are currently receiving a tax credit and did not file last year, it is time to renew your application. If you and/or your spouse are 65 years of age or older or totally disabled, own your home and your income does not exceed $60,000 you may be eligible for a tax benefit on your real estate taxes. Your 2016 Federal Income Tax Return and 1099 Social Security statement are needed as proof of income to submit an application. Transportation options include fixed routes and a Dial-a-Ride program. Our service is curb to curb. Our drivers can escort, but cannot assist, our riders. Caregivers ride free. Medical appointments have priority over social or personal care destinations. Every Friday, the Senior Center Bus does local shopping within Monroe.
